Trump Train Parade was fun and exciting...

The only surprise to me is that that 1,572 POC live in the Villages, even though it is a small percentage of the total population.

Apparently, looking at the breakdown, there are people who are responding both “white” and one of the POC categories, since 1,572 people respond they belong to one of the POC categories and 50,511 say they are white (1572 + 50511= 52,083), when the total population is only 51,442, and both categories were counted, or something. I’d like to know how that happened. 

That's interesting, TFS. To be honest, even though the Black / African American population is only 0.61% of the total population there, I was actually surprised there were that many. Why would they want to live there, in that hotbed of trump loving whiteness?

I actually love the idea of the Villages. Everything I need is right there, I get to drive a golf cart, lots of friends and drinking all day (and, apparently, lots of other “adult” activities). If it wasn’t in Florida and uber-conservative, I think I could be happy in a community like that.

Tone deaf is absolutely right. I won’t address the other things in have issue with the villages, as well as this member’s history of posting and running, but boy, that last sentence gives me more than pause. 

And the racial makeup of the villages that was posted is incredibly sad. I cannot imagine choosing...CHOOSING to live my life so out of touch with all kinds of people. Talk about missing some of the most important and rich aspects of community. Not really knowing anything other than what I read here, the villages (whether one is a democrat or republican) feels like the movie The Truman Show to me.

Yeah, I'm not exactly excited about him (mostly I live with a permanent sense of existential dread) but for the first time ever in my very Republican community, the liberals are hoping to self-fund and staff a Democratic/Biden office next door to the Trump Victory Center.  We always do phone banking, canvassing, etc.  but this year it feels important to have a loud, visual counter-presence to the Trumpers and a place for quiet Biden supporters to come in for supplies and support.  There is a county office a couple towns away but having something in the community may make a difference this year.  So no, maybe not the excitement of a golf cart parade but more grim resolution that we're not going to the let the Leones of this world determine the outcome of the election this time.

Supporting and voting for Biden-Harris. Encouraging others to do the same. But matching vitriol with vitriol-and-more infuriates me. There has to be a better way.

Wondering how fucking dull my life would have to be before I found a parade of seniors in golf carts ‘fun and exciting’.

This makes me think the food sucks there too, if we’re looking for even more reasons not to want to live there.

Coming out of my reading and not inertacting mode:

Third gen Floridian here: back when I was a kid, the villages didn’t exist. It was acres and acres of orange groves. It was lovely ... then they paved paradise, put up a parking lot and filled it with people who bitch and complain about Florida.

I’ll never forgive the developers for that.

Getting rid of social security and medicare (with a dash of COVID) is the first step towards fighting global climate change. If you can get enough of the people relying on these government programs to die sooner rather than later, you can cut down on the consumption of natural resources as a whole.

As far as modest proposals go, it's not a bad one.
