After reading the thread about separate toilet / bathrooms, it reminded me about something DSO and I were discussing recently. We watch a lot of renovation shows on TV, and we are always surprised at how many American homes have shower curtains. We have even seen shows where the renovated bathrooms still have a curtain, and we're like why? Here, you'd be hard pressed to find any houses that have showers with shower curtains. My mum's house, which was built in the late 1800s, has a shower with a shower curtain. (The bathroom was "renovated" sometime around the 50s or 60s, so it's not 1890 original haha!) Apart from that, I don't know one single person who has a shower curtain instead of a shower door. I'm sure there are plenty of older flats / apartments that possibly have them though. And I'm sure my grandparents' farmhouse would have had a shower curtain, but I can't remember - heck, they even had an outdoor toilet until sometime in the mid 70s!! Showers in the bathtub, instead of a separate bath/shower, are also uncommon. The old beach house owned by the staff club at work had a shower in the bath tub, but it had a glass door on a hinge instead of a curtain. I realise that this would be a space issue, so there are probably plenty of people who have a shower/bath combo. Oh, and does anyone know how to stop the shower curtain from blowing in and sticking to your legs while showering? It happens to me every time at my mum's house and I have no idea how to stop it!

I cannot stand the feel of a shower curtain, so we have a glass door on our shower. It's an older house, so it does still have a shower/tub combo.

Sometimes they can be hard to handle but you need a heavy duty liner with magnets and it will stick to the tub (unless the tub is plastic or fiberglass)
It's pretty common here for tub/shower combinations to have shower curtains especially older homes - however most people probably have separate showers (with glass doors) and tubs.

I hate shower curtains. The master bathroom has a separate shower with a glass door. It was originally a sliding door but we replaced it several years ago with a hinged one and I like it better.
I think a shower curtain with weights in the bottom stays in place better.

I prefer a shower curtain with a liner, when they get gross it is easy enough to just toss in the washing machine and hang back up to dry. My mother in law has clear glass doors on her tub showers and it is a pain to clean, I hate having to stand there meticulously squeegeeing the door before I can go along with my getting ready routine. If you don’t squeegee it it is much harder to clean. If I had to have a glass shower door I would rather it had texture to it so it wasn’t glaringly obvious it isn’t crystal clear.

If you have a metal tub, then purchase a shower curtain liner with magnets at the bottom. If not metal, I purchased shower curtain liner with suction cups on the edge which creates a little pod of air-tightness. We have shower curtains in both our bathrooms. One is a regular-sized tub and another tub is wider. To clarify, we have a decorative shower curtain that hangs outside of the tub and the liner has either magnets and suction cups. HTH
ETA: I dislike the look of the gold trim on a glass door. Can't stand it!

My house was built in 1998 and those shower doors with a track were installed in my shower in my master bedroom. It's just a shower- no tub. I've fought to clean those things for years and I finally said not anymore. I took the doors out, then took up the track and OMG!!! It was solid black under there and stuck down with that silicone caulk stuff- not sure what you call it but it's messy. I scraped and pulled forever and of course it pulled up some of my shower surface. I couldn't get the side rails to budge, but a guy is coming tomorrow to look at those and the places I made.
I absolutely LOVE my shower curtain! The liner is cloth and I put it on a separate smaller rod. I've had no problem with water getting out. Those doors are gross- never again! Now trackless is a different story...

When we purchased this house it had a glass door on the shower (separate shower). It was a PIA to clean and it held moisture in the shower and I had a huge problem with mold. So, when we replaced the tile and put in new tile I removed the door and use a shower curtain.
The tub had sliding glass doors that continually jumped the track. Also a mold collector. Cleaning the tub was awful because of the doors and not being able to clean without getting in the tub. Removed those and have shower curtain with liner.

We have both a separate shower with glass door and a shower in the bathtub with shower curtain (poll only lets you choose one). I prefer curtains as I hate to squeegee each time and the water is too hard to keep the door clear without doing that.

Another that has had doors and don't now because of the hassle of cleaning them. I have a main curtain, with a liner. So easy to toss the liner and get a new one when they become a bit used looking.

I absolutely HATE shower doors. Especially if you have hard water. Can NOT keep them clean. I promised myself I'd never have shower doors again. I have a fabric or other nice curtain on the outside with a liner on the inside. If the liner gets bad, toss it. I've never had a problem with the liner blowing in on me. They all have magnets and even if they don't stick to the tub, they weigh the liner down.

We had glass doors on our showers in our townhome years ago. One was a tub with the sliding doors on tracks. The other was a stall shower. I hated cleaning the doors (the funk that accumulated in the track no matter how clean we tried to keep it). I hated leaning over the tracks to give the baby a bath. I also hated cleaning the soap scum off the glass doors.
My current home was built in the 60s. We have a tub shower with a curtain, and another shower stall with a glass door (and we never use that shower since it’s not in a convenient location). We’ve since redone our main bathroom and replaced the tub, but we have a shower curtain w/liner. I replace the liner every so often so it’s always clean. When we redid the bathroom a tub and stall was not a possibility because the bathroom is small. We all share the bathroom because there is no master bathroom here (the horror! 😜). Though actually— it’s just dh and me here now.

We renovated our bath last year. Splurged on a frameless shower door with a special finish that repels hard water and soap scum. I do wipe it down in the morning. Takes 2 minutes.

I have an older house. Small bathroom that had glass shower doors. A few years ago, my so took them off to do something to them so they would slide better. When they were off, I loved it. It made my little bathroom seem not so little. So he took the tracks all off and you can’t tell that they were ever there. I now have a white fabric shower curtain and white liner. Love the look.

My ds bathroom has tub//shower combo and the prettiest shower curtain. Way easier to maintain/clean. Next home I want a walk in no door shower if we have a separate shower again. Hate hate hate the glass door/track type. Yuck!!

We’re in a 70’s house with both bathrooms that have tub/shower combo and both have shower curtains. Our master bathroom has a jacuzzi tub that I hate. I want to rip it out and put in a walk in shower. I’d love to not have a door at all, but our bathroom is too small and has a heater vent in the floor that is stupidly close to where the entry would be. I’m sure we will do some kind of glass door though. They don’t scare me as far as cleaning/squeegeeing goes. We had full size mirrors across the whole wall in our last house master bath/shower. (Yes, it’s weird, no we didn’t install it and it fogged up as soon as you turned on the hot water lol). We had to squeegee that every time we showered and it literally took like 1 min, so no big deal to me. We don’t have an issue with the curtain sticking to our legs even though our tub is fiberglass. Now at my Mom’s house? ? Ugh! I hate showering there. The curtain swirls in the whole time. It never did that when we were kids. Something happened with the water pressure in her neighborhood and it now trickles, so everyone has to put these weird shower heads on to get better pressure. It’s like it’s a tornado of air mixed with the water and it sucks the curtain in. Sooooo aggravating!

We have a tub/shower combo and have a curtain. It has never stuck to my legs, it sticksto the tub wall. It isn't the hard plastic, it's a waterproof fabric with a weight all along the bottom. Then there is a pretty coloured curtain that hangs on the outside. Our house was built in the late 70s and we redid the bathroom about 8 years ago and kept the curtain setup. We do bathe so I didn't want a glass door in the tub, plus they always seem harder to clean. More nooks and crannies.

I chose other. I have a walk in without a door. I love love love it! Darn it, I totally meant to include that as an option! Most of my friends who have built houses in the last few years have put in huge double walk in showers with no doors. And special mould resistant grout! When we renovated our bathrooms a few years ago, we wanted to get trackless shower doors. For some reason we couldn't - maybe the floor wasn't completely level? I can't remember why exactly.

I have glass doors on both showers and they are super easy to clean. When they were brand new we coated them with a nanocoat water repellant so the water just beads on them and doesn't stick. No hard water staining at all. We also bought the tile coating and did the tiles in the shower too. Again super easy to clean. You can also coat older glass screens too. You just need to use the cleaner and abrasive cloth first to make sure they are as clean as possible and then put the coating on.
Ours has now been on for 8 years and used every day. We are considering re-coating now when we get some time just so they stay nice.

I hate cleaning glass shower doors. Probably because we’ve lived in so many houses and they were never cleaned properly to begin with, so it becomes nearly impossible to clean.

I much prefer our bathtub/shower with curtain to shower doors. We have pretty hard water here and I have never seen a shower door in a friend's home that didn't look like it could use a good scrubbing or replacement (even when the rest of the house is immaculate).
My tub is cast iron, the shower curtain liners with the magnets work great at keeping the liner in place.
