I want to get a weighted blanket for my boyfriend's birthday and am looking for recommendations.
He has a lot of trouble sleeping and I am hoping this will help. I am thinking I should get a 20 pound? Or would 15 be better? He is 6 feet and I think around 180 pounds.
I would love to hear any opinions and personal experiences with weighted blankets.

I don't remember what kind I bought, but my DH has had trouble staying asleep for years. When he would wake up in the middle of the night it would sometimes take him HOURS to get back to sleep. I got a him a weighted blanket last year for Christmas, and although he thought it was kind of silly (he'd never heard of them before), he now is a believer, and still uses it on his side of the bed, even though it's summertime and we live in AZ. He still has occasional times when he has problems staying or getting back to sleep, but it's soooo much less than it used to be.
I'll see if I can find the info about what kind I bought- I remember the things I was most concerned about was that it had baffles to keep the beads from shifting, and that it was sewn tightly so the beads wouldn't fall out.

We have gravity blankets. I have a 20lbs and a 25 lbs. They are the best things ever! We have had them since they did a kickstarter a number of years ago. I LOVE it. I just got my 9 year old the kid's one and she loves it too.

My son bought me a 15 pound for the holidays last year. It ended up not helping me at all and the weight bothered me so I sent it back. So my only advice it to try and buy it somewhere it is easy to return if need be That said, I hope it helps him!

The rule of thumb is 1 lb of blanket for every 10 lbs of person so for 180 lbs, you'd want a blanket that weighs 18 lbs. I would also recommend glass beads as they make for a cooler blanket.

Weighted Blanket, 20 lbs... this is the one I ended up buying, plus a duvet cover for it. We have a king-sized bed, so the weighted blanket is just for his side of the bed; it's in between the sheet and the bedspread.

I have a 12lb, glass beads. I love it. It has made such a difference in my sleep. I still have insomnia, but the weighted blanket helps me sleep deeper and for longer periods of time.
The recommendation I heard, was 10% of body weight plus 2-3 pounds. My recommended weight would be 15-18-ish pounds(my weight fluctuates), but I'm staying with the 12lb because any heavier would make me too warm while sleeping. In the winter I don't use the heat at night, because the blanket keeps me warm. In the summer, I end up pushing the blanket off because it's too warm for me.

Dh and I are plus sized. I bought him one based on our weight and we were nearly crushed (not really but it felt like it) by the weight of it. I sent it back as a result. I get that it needs to be proportional to your weight but I would try again but with a lighter one for us.

Have you ever had to wash it, or do you just need to clean the cover?

I have This One. I’ve been very happy with it and I really like having the cool cover. My mom bought it for me and ended up liking it so much she bought herself one.

I have two, one at home and one at the lake. Both are 15 lbs which is about right for me. The one at home is a Weighted Idea blanket like CrimsonCat linked from Amazon and it’s the one I like. The cover is sold separately and I would recommend either buying one or making a cover it since these blankets aren’t very easily washable. The beads in the Weighted Idea blanket don’t seem to shift around much and they don’t seem to clump in the pockets making lumps like my other one (London Fog). The London Fog one came with a cover but that’s really the only thing I like about it. The beads in the London Fog blanket clump together in the pockets and it doesn’t lay nice and flat on you when you’re under it so it doesn’t feel like even pressure.
I bought some 108” wide flannel on sale at JoAnn’s and made myself a cover for the Weighted Idea blanket because I can sew and it was way cheaper for me to go that route than to order the cover for it from Amazon.
I had to ditch both of them for the summer because as much as I like the pressure of them, they are both way too hot for me to sleep under. I’m looking forward to the cooler weather when I can pull them out again. I might buy another one of the Weighted Idea blankets if I see them at a good price (I think I paid about $50-60 on Prime Day a couple years ago). It’s so much more comfortable than the other one.
If you can wait until closer to Thanksgiving there will probably be sales on these all over the place. They were pretty hot last Christmas.

Have you ever had to wash it, or do you just need to clean the cover? we've only had to clean the cover so far... don't know what might happen if/when we actually have to wash the blanket. And to clarify, since it's only for my DH, I stuck with the twin-sized one. I think it might have said it was 'cooler' beads or a cooler cover, or something? I did take that into consideration when I was looking, since we live in AZ.

One thing I wished I had paid attention to when buying....get the style where the beads are sewn in individual squares (i.e. so they are evenly spread out), otherwise, they will all sink to one corner as you use the blanket. Annoying!

also, the cover I bought has ties inside in the corners and along the edges- and the blanket has loops. So you tie the blanket / duvet cover together, tying bows thru the loops on the blanket itself. That helps to keep the blanket from bunching up inside the cover.

Oh yah, dear assistant manager at the airport location...I am working at your store to help with your staffing shortage. Being a bitch is not helping you. Now I can understand why you can't get people to work there.
Thank God, I only committed there for yesterday and tomorrow. Never again!

Thank you to everyone for the great info! I needed quality sleep for a lonnnnng, stressful day ahead, but woke up after only four hours , which happens way too often lately. I wonder if a weighted blanket would help----I'm gonna go get one TODAY !!! Oh yah, dear assistant manager at the airport location...I am working at your store to help with your staffing shortage. Being a bitch is not helping you. Now I can understand why you can't get people to work there. Thank God, I only committed there for yesterday and tomorrow. Never again! I'm just being silly and don't intend this to be mean, but did you mean to post this on a different thread, or was her bitchiness due to lack of sleep? And---did you tell her to consider buying a weighted blanket?
