"A popular website for posts about the conspiracy group QAnon abruptly shut down after a fact-checking group identified the developer as a New Jersey man. Qmap.pub is among the largest websites promoting the QAnon conspiracy, with over 10 million visitors in July, according to web analytics firm SimilarWeb Ltd., and served as the primary archive of QAnon’s posts. The website aggregates posts by Q, the anonymous figure behind the QAnon theory, and the creator of the Qmap.pub website is known online only as “QAppAnon.” The fact-checking site Logically.ai identified Jason Gelinas of New Jersey on Sept. 10 as the “developer and mouthpiece” for the site. New Jersey state records connect QAppAnon to Gelinas’s home address, Bloomberg found... A LinkedIn profile for Gelinas says he works as an information security analyst at Citigroup. Citigroup declined to comment... QAppAnon, the online name of qmap’s creator, also runs a Patreon account, which receives more than $3,000 a month in donations, according to the Patreon site. In March, QAppAnon announced on Patreon an upcoming Android app named “Armor of God,” a social network for followers of QAnon. In Armor of God’s Google Play Store profile, the service describes itself as a platform “designed for patriots worldwide to create and share content including prayers, news, memes and posts.” The developer’s email address listed on the Google Play page is “support@patriotplatforms.com.” According to New Jersey state business records, Patriot Platforms LLC’s address matches Gelinas’s home address. After a Bloomberg News investigation, the Armor of God app was no longer accessible on the Google Play store." www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-09-11/qanon-website-shuts-down-after-n-j-man-identified-as-operatorMany q aficionados get their Q "drops" at Qmap vs. 8kun due to its ease of use over the more "down low" parts of the internet like 8kun. So, is Gelinas Q? Or just Q-adjacent? Here's hoping we find out more. "In the world of QAnon, the site qmap.pub is something of a sacred text. It’s a site designed to collect Q’s posts on other message boards and collate them in a searchable database; over the years, it has grown to include glossaries on themes, profiles on people named across the drops (handily sorted into ‘Evil’, ‘Traitor/Pawn’, and ‘Patriot’), and even a prayer wall. Most followers of QAnon tend not to visit Q’s posts on 8kun and the ‘chan’ boards where they are initially posted (the vernacular used on those sites is deliberately exclusionary and newcomers are often put off). This makes qmap.pub a crucial port of call for all QAnon information and a major node in how the movement disseminates its lore. The site has been hitting over 10 million monthly users since April of this year." www.logically.ai/articles/qanon-key-figure-man-from-new-jersey

Though I can’t imagine not having it, I think The Internet has made the world a worse place to live in in so many ways. Looking at our current situations, I see more cons than pros.

I totally disagree. Yes, there are plenty of dangers and downsides but for the most part are really just putting the unsavory sides of human nature on display. People like this have always been among us but they have far more reach now. But the advantages far far outweigh the risks IMO. The internet has brought so much equity to so much of the world. It’s given access to a world beyond their immediate area that millions and millions of people never would have had before. A great leveling is beginning to occur where wealth isn’t the only way to access opportunity. We are still in early days of the internet, relatively speaking, but it’s revolutionizing our world just like the industrial revolution did. Any massive change has negative consequences but we have to learn to mitigate those rather than give up because of them.

I agree with a lot of what you say, of course, but the most concerning part of the internet to me is how it's dehumanizing life. There's hardly a need to see or talk to someone in person anymore. People are fine with staying in their houses and not meeting up with friends. After all, we have texting and Facebook and Instagram and forums. We all fit into convenient groups and subgroups now. Can you imagine how different the upcoming election would be without internet? And Covid? It's all unreal to me.

The people I am seeing repost most QAnon stuff are in their 20s and early 30s. They are mainly working class white males, and believe their 'rights' are being eroded by 'lefties and elitists' There's hardly a need to see or talk to someone in person anymore. People are fine with staying in their houses and not meeting up with friends. Well, that's what we are supposed to be doing where I live. Covid and all that.

Apparently there's a private Facebook group for women for Trump. When I looked at the people who liked the post, I knew someone my age. I have nieces and nephews that are pro-Trump and in their 20's. One is anti-mask and pregnant.

Raise better men 🤷🏾♀️So many people aren’t safe because that hasn’t happened yet. You aren’t safe because it hasn’t happened yet!! The internet has absolutely nothing to do with the root issue which seems to be entitlement and not knowing how to deal with feelings of inadequacy if you ask me.

The internet enables us to meet and know people we’d otherwise never have the chance to know, and maintain relationships with people we’d probably have lost touch with absent the internet. But everyone still cares about in-person interaction and really misses it right now.

It's frightening how quickly Qanon conspiracies have spread amongst people I know.
Two years ago, every suburban mom was convinced that she and her children were nearly "sex trafficked" by some random (generally darker) guy at Target.
I feel like the Russian bot farms floated *that* disinformation campaign as a precursor to this insanity. They saw how gullible Americans are and realized that threats to suburban (read:white) women and children were a good way to rile up the base.
These people are dangerous and easily controlled. I have unfriended so many people who suddenly care so much about "the children" while supporting Donald Trump, a rapist in action and whose policies have enabled the sexual abuse of women and children at the border.
These people have no idea that sex trafficking also includes prostitution.
A small fraction of the stupidity I have heard from people I once respected:
"This sex trafficking is getting so bad, you have to vote Trump."
"#savethechildren KILLary on trial and will be executed for crimes against God and man!"
"I was the victim of ritualistic satanic abuse at (insert name of our high school here. Adrenochrome is real. The cabal is real. The devil is real. #savethechildren"
"800,000 children a year go missing and are never heard from again. Where are these children going?"
It's frighteningly stupid. And don't get me started on these idiots that post shit like, "unfriend me now if you think pedophilia is okay." I mean, really. Who, besides pedos, does not find pedophilia completely abhorrent? How is this suddenly a brave stance?
I am appalled and fascinated by the whole thing. It's just so batshit.

I see these people making money by fleecing stupid people and I wonder why I even bother to work a real job? I have the tech skills and ability to make a legit looking website and a decent enough imagination to come up with something they would fall for.
Oh yeah, I forgot. I'm a decent person with morals.
But I see these people and think that maybe being a decent person isn't so lucrative after all and if they're being willingly stupid, maybe it's time to start taking advantage of them.

But I think as a proportion to their population size, there's less gullibility PER CAPITA in their age group.

Those of us born before the internet seem to be the most gullible to its crazy side. Look at this Monmouth recent poll. Who are the most behind Trump by age... I read the bolded part and immediately thought of this that I read earlier today from NPR.. link”Young people are very interested in politics," a researcher says. "The real problem is they don't follow through." She found they can get overwhelmed by processes they're new to, like registration. So, advocates are trying to answer their questions now.” If they really get overwhelmed by the simple act of registering to vote, then I have doubts for the future. And if I’m not mistaken the younger crowd is one of the largest groups of not wearing masks or social distancing. I mean how many colleges opened up and then closed in the matter of days because of the rapid spread of the virus on campuses because of the lack of social distancing etc. My point is, I think if one is gullible and buy these conspiracy theories, age has very little to do with it. If old folks believe them today, there is a very good chance they would have believe them back when they were young whipper snappers. IMO

I'm curious why the time spans for these generations aren't evenly divided. There is a 3 year difference in Boomers vs GenX.

The cabal is real. The devil is real. #savethechildren" This made me think of the craziness about the McMartin Preschool back in the 80s? 90s? People went apes#it saying that the people who ran the school were satanic and abusing children. There was a big trial and eventually all charges were dropped and no evidence was produced for the accusations. People sure do get worked up and believe strange stuff. It must be hard when people you know and love are buying into the insanity.

"Gelinas, 42, was outed as the operator of QMap by fact-checking website Logically.ai. The Logically report points out that it’s unlikely that Gelinas is Q or even that he was involved in the group’s origins. The website has been removed. The most recent post on the site showed a meme which suggested that Adolf Hitler’s act after assuming power was to defund the police. This claim has been debunked." So a Wall Street IT security guy presumably w/access to Citi's secure banking systems' back-ends is a Q believer and runs a Q-adjacent mouthpiece website. No cause for alarm. heavy.com/news/2020/09/jason-gelinas/

People are too lazy to look into issues, what’s put out there, to find truth and facts and what is real or not. Then they tie everything to politics. Then people like trump and the ones pulling strings behind him figure if the can create chaos, fear, division, then they have a good chance of leading.

It seems to me that many people have never learned how to analyze information nor check for the source and then examine the source. Jokes are made "it is on the internet, so it must be true" but many people operate under that assumption. "He is a Christian so I know he is telling me the truth" is another assumption that allows manipulation.
That is the problem, not the internet.
