So how much does something like this cost? My mom is trying to convince me that a relative's move (700 miles) will cost $15,000. Their house is maybe 2500 sq. ft. Just an average household with 5 family members.
That seems crazy high to me.

I have moved from the UK to USA to Japan to U.K. to USA and always had a packing team at both ends. I would suggest purging before they arrive. Put post it’s on things you do not want packed or keep them in a separate area/room.

Let me put it this way, I have never packed our house. All moves were paid for across country, and it included everything (except unpacking and I LOVE to unpack). Anyway, for all moves for the kiddos when they moved out, we also had movers pack them up and move them. We have always found it to be fast and extremely well done. Praying all goes well with your daughter and your move!

Just reading your OP and having no experience with this, I immediately thought this sounds ideal for exactly your situation. Reading everyone’s responses it sounds better yet!
Praying for your daughter.

When I was in university, hardly anyone lived in residences, so we all got apartments for the 8 months of the school year ... and then had to move all our stuff home/into storage for the summer and move it all back in the fall. Then I got married and had to move an apartment's worth of stuff into a townhouse, and then we bought our first house a year later and had to move our stuff again. That was it. I swore to never pack and move anything again--I hate moving!!! So the last couple moves, I had the moving company pack us. Sooooo much better if you want to actually live your life up until a day or two before your move!!
I'm already a super organized and tidy person, so we didn't really have any issues with weird packing. Our companies did have some restrictions on what they would pack/move, so I had to do things like our alchohol cupboard and live plants, but nothing they did got broken or lost. The last move, I also had them do the unpacking. As I said, I'm super organized, so the unpacking was more of an annoyance to me than a help because they really just take stuff out of the boxes and put it on a counter/table for you to put where you want it--I just found that they unpacked too far away from where I wanted the stuff that it would have been easier for me to just drag the box where I needed it and put the (well labelled, well organized) stuff straight into the cupboards.
I am a super quick unpacker, so our current 3000+ sq ft house was completely unpacked and arranged and picture hung, etc within two days. If I had to have done all the packing, I'm not sure I would have had the energy left for all that!

Put post it’s on things you do not want packed or keep them in a separate area/room. Anything we don't want to go on the moving truck is removed from the house before the movers show up, usually to the car or hotel room. Then I set aside a medium sized box that is well marked "Pack Last". This is where things like screws, parts that might get lost, go. Also in this box are a few light bulbs, toilet paper, paper towels. These are things you are going to need right off the bat at the new location. By packing last, it will be first off and you will easily be able to get to it.

We moved about 25 miles, 2100 sf house filled. We boxed up all items, movers wrapped big pieces of furniture and we gladly paid $2600 plus fed crew both days. Our furniture was stored for 2 days in trailer. Movers were at each house aprx 6 hours. DH moved garage workshop stuff in POD and made multiple trips with truck and trailer with patio furniture, BBQ grills and all the stuff that would not fit in the POD. We were exhausted. In my defense, I thought I had pared down - I was in denial I hauled items to thrift shops, DH gave away "stuff" and continued to do so after the move.

4 years ago I moved from AL to WA and the cost was $10k. Movers packed the kitchen ( dishes, cookware and good China)and artwork. We packed the rest. Money well spent having packing done by others.
