I'm packing for our move and we have so much stuff... I feel a sense of urgency due to my daughter having her mastectomy tomorrow. I'm anxious to be there to offer support during her recovery. Has anyone had someone come in and pack up all their stuff? I know it will cost more but we are old (and my husband has Parkinson's, he's very limited in energy). Any suggestions for me? TIA Martha

Yes, weâve done it for most of our moves (not counting college moves).
I generally still pack a few boxes. Things that I know Iâll need right away, my scrapbook supplies.
Make sure you toss anything you donât want packed. They will pack the trash in you garbage can if itâs left there.
Youâll probably end up with more boxes to unpack as they seem more generous with packing paper and bubble wrap.

we did it when someone else paid for the move. It was fantastic. Now that said they did pack up things that we would never have done..
If you do go with professionals, you should figure out the things you can't be without and pack them separately.

We've had it done when we had company moves that were paid for. Just make sure that all trash cans are emptied and anything perishable (ie - fruit in your fruit bowl) is removed before they arrive, or they will pack your trash and apples.

usually only people who are having their move paid for by a company do this. their packing supplies are pretty expensive and they use a LOT. if you can afford to do it, DO IT.

Yes, and it was fantastic. Just be sure to toss or clearly label EVERYTHING you don't want packed by them; they are very thorough; and fast.

We've done it many times due to company relocations. It is so much easier, not to mention takes much less time, than doing it yourself. If you choose to go this route, try to have 2-3 other people with you the day(s) they pack up. More eyes to make sure things are packed/labeled correctly, as well as answer any questions.

All military moves have the option to have the packers pack our household goods. Most do so!
I agree with the othersâweed out everything you donât want packed. Iâll include toilet brushes and plungers on that list! We either toss those or leave them for the next person.
I really try to have the house tidied up and like things together. That way, when you unpack you have all of your books together, all of your first aid items together, etc. We also have a box we call the âlast boxâ with all the items you need right awayâcoffee pot, mugs, cups to drink out of, a roll of TP, paper towels, etc. We mark the box with all of the extension cords, shims for shelves/furniture, shelf pegs, any screws to put together furniture, etc. Some people will put that furniture hardware in a zip baggie and tape it to the item.
We feed our packers and movers, but they are also aware that itâs a military move and that we donât pay for the move. We also have Gatorade available as well as water. Military moves also specify that paper is put into the bottom of the box and on top of the box, as well as tape across the center seam and the side seams. Make sure your driveway can bear the weight of a moving truck. If itâs crumbling or narrow, that can break edges or cause the driveway to break up. Some companies wonât take things off the walls, pack light bulbs, candles, and some do.
Ask away if you have more questions!

We paid for the move ourselves and got a quote for a complete pack and move only and the difference was not that great. Two men packed up a three bed bungalow with garage in around 6 hours so we paid for 12 or so hours labour effectively. Worth every single penny. They didnât unpack any furniture drawers so there was nothing to sort out at the other end - every drawer was kept as is. All clothes were moved on their hangers in special hanging boxes. It was absolutely brilliant. We had folk visit us the night before we moved house and they couldnât believe the house looked just as normal. We spent time in the preceding weeks decluttering, and I packed a box of stuff we needed immediately at the new house (kettle, mugs and biscuits!), and defrosted the fridge and freezer but that was it.

In our last two moves, one we had the movers pack us and the other I packed our house. Sounds like you are in a time crunch, so would be worth it to have them pack you.
I have to say the advantage to packing myself is that I did an excellent job sorting through stuff, purging, and organizing. I also had the time to do so. When the movers packed us I wasn't as diligent about that and really should have been. But it was also quite easy and they are pros.

I used to work for a moving company, and we moved my inlaws. They packed everything. When it was all over my MIL said she wished that had paid us to pack, too. They had no idea how much time it would actually take to pack.

Wow, such great information! Thank you all so much!
I don't really have time to purge. Our new home has a 3 car garage so I can have them put most of the boxes there once they arrive, which will help me I think at that end.

We did. We were so stressed before our move and my dadâs upcoming surgery that we had packers. It was money well spent.

Yes and it was good but if youâre doing the unpacking expect some odd combinations in the boxes!

If you're looking for a specific mover, I highly recommend Paul Arpin Van Lines. I have no affiliation with them except that they've packed and moved us. We were very happy with them. No idea on the cost as they were paid moves for us.

When I moved across country from Seattle to DC, I hired a task rabbit to come help with the packing. I purged a lot and also kept a storage unit that I will eventually need to empty out. I just did a move across town two weeks ago and packed myself. It took a good week and a half with very little purging. If I could afford packing help, I would definitely do it.

Me unpacking at the other end: Oh, a used sponge! A chewed up dog toy! One flip flop!
To echo the comments above, if you are able, purge and organize a bit beforehand, because they WILL pack everything đ Otherwise, its heavenly.

I was totally amazed at how fast they were able to pack up my house. It was just two men, and it took about five hours. Each room was packed and labeled. A man would do one room at a time and he would start at the door and work his way around the wall packing as he went with no hesitation. It was like a vacuum cleaner that sucked things right into the packing boxes. As was mentioned above, they had special boxes for hanging clothes, for china, for glassware and so on. It made it so easy to unpack at the other end.
The second time we had movers pack us, we had to pay a deposit fee on the boxes. We got it back when we returned the boxes. It was great motivation for me to get it all unpacked and I got over 200 boxes unpacked and put up in ten days! I really surprised them that I had so much and then had it all unpacked so fast. But when everything was packed by room it makes it easier.
They also packed up my scrapbook room both times (I see others elected to do it themselves.) There was no problem, nothing broke.

Loads of boxes were put into the integral garage. Bearing in mind, I had a new born baby and a toddler, any spare time I had (and when I had the energy) I lifted just one box into the house at a time and unpacked it. It was all very Fly Lady before Fly Lady was a thing! It meant I didnât get overwhelmed and also allowed for more purging to be done as I unpacked.

Imagine the surprise when the dog food bowl is carefully wrapped up and full of uneaten dog food. ETA Prayer being sent for your DD

No idea on the cost as they were paid moves for us. Keep in mind that for most companies, even national chains, operate independently. So a good company in one town may not be the same as another. Ask who packs your stuffâemployees or day laborers. A day laborer will have only had the most rudimentary of training that day. Usually they will pack the garage or basement, but I always ask. (And usually the most experienced people will pack the kitchen. Itâs a lot of fragile items and a lot of wrapping. Make sure they label the flatware box and the pots and pans box. And say that you donât want any boxes marked âmiscellaneousâ.

We had the movers pack us and like the others have said it made the move so much easier. There wee a few items though that we didn't even want to go in the moving van. We took all of our personal papers, jewelry and anything that we could never replace like the children's baby books in the car with us. With each move we ended up with something missing or damaged. I think the real reason we took some things with us is because some new neighbors that were moving next to us lost everything they owned when the moving van was in an accident and burned.

Yes. It was included in my husbands relocation package when we moved from FL to VA. It was amazing. I still had to supervise, and make sure they were doing things correctly and labeling boxes and putting extra packing in with fragile stuff, but that was ok. It took them 2 days to pack it all and load the truck. It was amazing. I wish we could have had movers do our packing when we moved from VA to MI. That would have been even more amazing! đ€Ł

Prayers and good luck to your DD for tomorrow!
As far as moving, we've moved 4 times in 9 years. We hired movers each time and they certainly varied! The past 2 times were moves right within the complex we're living in and they were difficult moves! The last movers were recommended by a neighbor. She said that they were reasonably priced and good. Fine. They came here (2 guys--HUGE and they looked like they just got out of prison) and didn't have a truck, a dolly or a tool!! They asked US for tools!!! They had to move our 3 bedroom apartment down from the 3rd floor to a 1st floor, but it took them over 10 hours. Looking back, I should have just slammed the door on their faces but we were desperate. DH just had surgery and we had to move out that weekend.
DD and I ended up helping these guys move the furniture, etc. DD took furniture apart and carried REALLY heavy items. DH finally suggested that these guys get a dolly from U-haul right across the street. It still wasn't enough for this big move. We have heavy furniture and a lot of it!!! (Turned out that these guys were hired by the owner of this 'company' via Craigslist and they were gang-members!!!!! Nice!!). Lesson learned!
If we could, we'd love to have a "white glove service" where the movers just box and move everything. We've gotten to the point where we've weeded through our stuff each move so we're down to essential items only. I hope you get these type of movers and that it's easy enough for you so you could focus on DD's surgery and recovery. Prayers to you both!!!
