How scary
I wish the media and the movement would have used different terminology rather than defund the police because most rational people know that advocating for no police is ludicrous.

Hopefully, it was just a drunk person at the wrong door. I’m sure it was scary nonetheless.

*Defunding police is going to be a huge mistake.* While I'm sorry that your daughter experienced something that scary, your one personal anecdote does not warrant complete dismissal of the need to defund* the police. In fact, in might actually be an argument for it in that the police might have responded quicker if they weren't pulled away handling things they are not really trained to do. *if you haven't already, please educate yourself about what the defund the police idea is really about instead of the knee jerk reaction to the term defund.

I’m sorry that happened, but your post shows you don’t understand what defunding the police means.

In my neighborhood, this has been an issue for years. Of course no one wants to do away with police. You're seeing propaganda and misunderstanding. You will feel much better if you do your own research ETA: Wow! Lots of people essentially said the same thing when I was typing. Didn't mean to pile-on.

Thank God they are ok.
It's a shame that law abding citzens will suffer due to less funding/LEO's and less applicants. All due to the hate from people.
LEO'S are leaving the profession, people are choosing not to apply and some goverment bodies are removing funds. Why do a dangerousjob with no backing, hate spewed at you for 12-16 hours, criminals now hunting you and your family and on and on.
I can tell you I am so glad this ended up with no injuries but it's not going to stay that way. We need our LEO 's to protect and defend our communities.
My God, I'm so glad they are 10-8.

Defunding is the wrong word. What proponents of "defunding" want is to let police do police work. Let social workers deal with social work issues, let mental health professionals deal with mental health issues. It is a shifting of funding to other professions who should be handling these issues in the first place. Proponents also favor police looking like police and not military. Military garb and equipment just makes police appear more threatening and escalates problems.

Glad that she wasn't hurt, although I'm sure she was terrified.
"Defunding" the police would probably have freed up police officers to actually get there sooner. It means having other people do some of their more menial calls so that they can focus on the important ones. An armed officer doesn't need to respond to a stolen bicycle/lawnmower/etc call An armed officer doesn't need to respond to a missing person call An armed officer doesn't need to respond to a minor fender bender. If you had other trained people to take these calls, then the armed officers can focus on the more important calls like your daughter's. If people would actually do some research, this is a good thing for police officers.
But people only see "defunding" and dismiss it altogether. It is a rather unfortunate word choice.

Because they will have less to do, freeing up their time from responding to calls other agencies should respond to instead.

Really do not think defunding that police department would have them waiting any longer. I have never had help arrive promptly. It is scary because you are doing everything exactly as you've been taught, only you were taught they would arrive in a reasonable time. An hour wait is unacceptable. So much could have happened in that one hour. I agree with that. I wonder what was going on that made them respond so slowly. In my house, had the drunk made it through the door, he would have been shot multiple times. Then the police would have an entirely different matter to deal with.

An hour is totally unacceptable for an active forced entry call. Is it possible that dispatch knew the person was no longer there? Just wondering if they were still on the line and within 5-10 minutes (your more typical response time) the person had left and the call was deprioritized? Most cities - Dallas included average less than 10 minutes for a high priority 911 call. I'm glad your daughter is unhurt.

I agree with some of what you have said but as a female, if I was involved in a fender bender at night, maybe even in daylight, depending on where the accident occurred, I might want a police officer there before I even step out of the car. And that is the beauty of "defunding"...it is sending out the proper response for the situation. Totally agree with you that a fender bender in a busy area in the daytime is totally different than an isolated area at night.

I wonder what was going on that made them respond so slowly. I would think that it's because they are understaffed and don't have enough officers to deal with everything going on in Dallas on a Saturday night/Sunday morning. Dallas PD has been understaffed for 4-5 years now. It is a wonder that she heard from a officer in a hour. I have been so thankful I do not live within the Dallas city limits.

But here is where "defunding" is an issue and a solution has to be figured out in more detail. Right now it's a knee jerk reaction and the consequences are going to be dangerous.
For example, we send a DV social worker to a home, when? When the situation is happening, after LEO have showed up, to the jail, the next day...when do they go?
We have civilian crash investigation, they go out take the report and then decide if LEO needs to respond. There was no pulling form the pilice budget, these are addtional funded positions and yes, they do free up time.
So yes, we need other ways to respond but we need the money to fund it not remove money from LEO. They are stretched so thin,it would blow your mind.
We have a county of 240,000 people and on any given lets say night we have maybe 75 LEO'S from all agenices available.
Think about that.... so removing some calls is wonderful but taking money, not ok.

After 15 minutes of this i can promise you i would have been so pissed off at having my peace interrupted i would have grabbed a baseball bat and opened the door and beat his drunk ass and then called that fucker an ambulance.
Well, that's what i would have told the dispatcher, anyway.
I thought most people were aware that "defund the police" doesn't mean no police, but i guess not. They need a different term.

All of this, although I agree that a minor fender bender could be a dangerous situation if the other party was being an ass about it and there were no other people around. In that case, though, it'd be dangerous long before a LEO showed up to such a low-priority call, unfortunately.

The link in the article you shared stated: ".....eliminating 150 vacant officer positions...." That is more than likely why it took so long for an LEO to respond.

and it took over an hour for them to show up and the person was gone by the time police showed up. Thankfully, the apartment complex has strong doors or I might be posting something very tragic. *Defunding police is going to be a huge mistake.* The story. Someone was body slamming the apartment door at 2 in the morning. Thankfully they were both home because it would have been so much more terrifying for one person to handle. They are assuming it was a drunk person. They recorded it but I have no idea how to post from a text message and its not that exciting to watch anyway. They recorded it from one of the bedrooms with the door shut and it was still very loud. Wow! That would be scary! *Defunding police is going to be a huge mistake.* I agree.

To me, defunding means less money spent on ridiculous weapons, and more money on properly training and educating our officers.
I’m sorry your daughter had to wait an hour for police to respond. That’s ridiculous.

In my state, most large cities do have community service officers. They are responsible for most of the above. Domestic violence calls are the most dangerous for police officers. It is during those calls that most officers are wounded or killed. It would be great to have more mental health professionals available. Do you realize that it is next to impossible for people in my area who are seeking mental health assistance to actually get it in a timely manner? If you call for an appointment, it might take a month or longer to get an appointment. Even when I, as an established patient, calls for a routine follow-up appointment I have to wait 2 months for an opening. If we had a large pool of mental care professions seeking jobs, I would be all for this. Mental Health services are already overrun. Expecting them to take up the slack for police just is not realistic.

Okay - there's actually just a ton of bad information on here. Defunding doesn't mean reform, defunding doesn't mean more training - defunding means LESS money going to the police department and spending that money in other areas. Now I will agree that no one is suggesting defunding means zero money or disbanding the police department. The BLM has defined it very specifically: blacklivesmatter.com/what-defunding-the-police-really-means/

I am sure she called 911. No one calls the police directly--especially in the middle of the night when the offices are closed.

I am in NO WAY an advocate of taking money away from the police. De-militarizing it...yes!
I would LOVE to see money spent towards more training and more community outreach projects.
We keep telling some of you on this thread that defunding the police DOES NOT mean taking money away, but why you don't want to acknowledge that, I don't know.
I honestly have not seen any Peas "hate" on LEO. Not sure why you feel it necessary to characterize us as LEO haters.

To my knowledge the police have yet to be “defunded” so why the hour wait. Maybe they were spending their time harassing...or worse...a POC.
