To my knowledge the police have yet to be “defunded” so why the hour wait. Maybe they were spending their time harassing...or worse...a POC. Dallas PD has been without full staffing for about 4 years. There have been LONG delays for several years on calls, especially calls that are non emergency.

Okay - there's actually just a ton of bad information on here. Defunding doesn't mean reform, defunding doesn't mean more training - defunding means LESS money going to the police department and spending that money in other areas. Now I will agree that no one is suggesting defunding means zero money or disbanding the police department. The BLM has defined it very specifically: blacklivesmatter.com/what-defunding-the-police-really-means/It’s interesting that people continue to say defunding means more training, defunding means sending social workers in place of police, defunding does not mean less or no police. How can you take money away from the police budget yet expect them to get more training. Is this free training, online training, what training is this. Training costs money. The instructor must be paid, admin stuff needs to be done by a paid person, training materials prepared or purchased, the officers need to be pulled from their duty to attend, someone has to fill in for the officers in training causing OT to cover the shifts and I’m sure there are other costs involved. Domestic violence calls are one of the most dangerous calls an officer goes on. So now we are sending social workers in their place. Or are we sending an officer in first then the social worker. Are we going to pay twice the number of people for the same call. If an officer is still going, how is this taking this type of call out of the police hands. A mentally ill or high person with a weapon. Is that where we are sending social workers. Fire fighters won’t go into a scene until the police secure it, but we want unarmed social workers going into unsecured scenes. The call to defund the police is causing issues in Seattle. The black female police chief retired because she was not going to layoff officers. The mayor and city council tied her hands and let the protests turn into riots. Protesters poured cement in a doorway and tried setting the police station on fire planning on trapping officers inside.

I am in NO WAY an advocate of taking money away from the police. De-militarizing it...yes! I would LOVE to see money spent towards more training and more community outreach projects. We keep telling some of you on this thread that defunding the police DOES NOT mean taking money away, but why you don't want to acknowledge that, I don't know. I honestly have not seen any Peas "hate" on LEO. Not sure why you feel it necessary to characterize us as LEO haters. Not on this thread, but there absolutely were a few people saying "f" the police and others "liked" the comment. Sickening.
Remember AOC's comment that defunding the police meant "defund." It seems there's some confusion on what that statement means within the party.

Funny how it goes from a general "you all hate LEOs" down to just just a few. I am a veteran of military service AND have worked on several community outreach programs for Rape Prevention/Domestic Violence IN TANDEM with local police. Back the f^&* off my bumper with this BS. You guys are being purposely obtuse.

Morning, Hi. I know everyone has suggestions and I'm not BEING SNARKY, thank you for this post. If we go by the letter to the editor and require a 4 year acadmey, during those 4 years who's on the streets? Most agenices are under staffed as it is right now. Think about it, maybe 100 LEO's a shift for a county of 300,000. I can't tell you how many LEO'S were on the fence about early retirement before but with was it happening are putting in their papers. This is going to be a HUGE issue, we are losing experience, knowledge and common sense and will be left with young inexperienced LEO with no experienced trainers. Just a question, what addtional training would be suggested? ...to all that are about to pounce try to be civil. I think we are past the time for additional training. LEO are more of a menace to society than the citizens they are sworn to protect. It’s really clear with the spotlight on police officers just how badly the system is working. Tons of documentaries, tons of dead black bodies, tons of history to revisit. A lot of solid research and you still have this type of defense. It’s really inexcusable at this point to defend law enforcement. It’s okay to be quiet. I personally don’t give a damn about “experienced trainers” retiring because the method of policing they use shouldn’t be passed down to anyone. The system is working as it should and Black people won’t be tolerating this treatment anymore. Defund the police. Disarm the police. Fuck the police. www.vox.com/2020/6/6/21280643/police-brutality-violence-protests-racism-khalil-muhammad

You know, I am kind of surprised that no one has responded with the “this is the reason we have home defense weapons.” It isn’t the popular opinion, but as a woman who lives alone, should that person actually broken down the door and the police response taken that long? I would like to think at that point I would have the ability to defend myself if the need arose.

There is a reason NCIS background checks have hit record highs just shy of 4 million every month since June and gun sales have increased dramatically. 1.8 million guns were sold in August alone. People see what's happening and know they are pretty much on their own.

Glad that she wasn't hurt, although I'm sure she was terrified. "Defunding" the police would probably have freed up police officers to actually get there sooner. It means having other people do some of their more menial calls so that they can focus on the important ones. An armed officer doesn't need to respond to a stolen bicycle/lawnmower/etc call An armed officer doesn't need to respond to a missing person call An armed officer doesn't need to respond to a minor fender bender. If you had other trained people to take these calls, then the armed officers can focus on the more important calls like your daughter's. If people would actually do some research, this is a good thing for police officers. But people only see "defunding" and dismiss it altogether. It is a rather unfortunate word choice. In my state, most large cities do have community service officers. They are responsible for most of the above. Domestic violence calls are the most dangerous for police officers. It is during those calls that most officers are wounded or killed. It would be great to have more mental health professionals available. Do you realize that it is next to impossible for people in my area who are seeking mental health assistance to actually get it in a timely manner? If you call for an appointment, it might take a month or longer to get an appointment. Even when I, as an established patient, calls for a routine follow-up appointment I have to wait 2 months for an opening. If we had a large pool of mental care professions seeking jobs, I would be all for this. Mental Health services are already overrun. Expecting them to take up the slack for police just is not realistic. But by defunding the police, you can actually pay more mental health workers. Many mental health professionals hold masters fre greed and make maybe $35,000-$45,000 beginning salary. With student loan debt the way it is, many of us are switching professions.

I honestly don’t look at it as a now and before now. Me now is no different in this respect than me 20 years ago. Except more recently people are surprised by this stance. I am exactly the person that people think don’t exist... very liberal and vote that way.

Peaceful protests have been turning violent after dark for months now. The rioting, destroying of property, looting and burning of buildings -sometimes with people in them and barricading them in, is out of control. State and local leaders are letting it happen, downplaying it and changing policies so that there isn't much of a deterrent, since those that do get arrested are right back out on the street the very next day to keep it going. Anarchists are emboldened by these policies to the point where even in the daytime they're being aggressive and violent in public eateries, gas stations and just on the street in broad daylight in general. People are being threatened and harassed to take a knee, raise a fist, say his/her name or conform in general to the demand of the moment. They have threatened to bring it out from the cities into the suburbs. The policies being enacted that prevent police from doing their job and protecting the city and its citizens, along with the media jumping to calling any police shooting of a black person as racially motivated as soon as it happens, before they have any facts and the politicians publicly going right along with it, actually being hunted by anarchists -are resulting in police officers resigning in record numbers and police officials taking early retirement. The leaders are letting the rage mobs tell them what to do. One police department was disbanded in Minneapolis, due to the threat of more lives lost. Now people are threatening violence if Trump nominates someone.

And this SAME attitude and action towards POC by law enforcement has got to stop too! The same exact fear you have for your husband is the SAME EXACT fear that POC have for their sons and their husbands. Help me to understand WHY the police are soooo quick to use force/shoot an unarmed black man as opposed to an ARMED militia man WALKING DOWN THE STREET with a rifle? Numerous peas have said we don't wish to take away money from the police, no defunding, rather a redirection of fund that would hopefully de-escalate the violence, BUT IT SEEMS you would rather their be an escalation of force on the side of the police. I hope that I am wrong.

Hi, As I have stated time and time again, THERE ARE COPS THAT SHOULD NOT BE COPS.
So, no not all cops shoot at all POC, just as all POC of color don't just shoot at cops.
I encourage y'all go do a ride along, go take a de-esclation class, call your department and ask if you can run through LEO scenarios
Let's hear your take after doing any of those. If you had first hand experience maybe you would understand more of the actions of LEO, and no I am not justifing shooting unarmed POC before someone twists my statement.

It's a great concept but I do not know of these services availability? Nothing in my area anyways.
