I have been watching more and more videos of Black people getting stopped for no reason and completely harassed by officers who demand their licenses for doing absolutely nothing wrong. And those are the thousands that are now videotaping. More and more are coming across my newsfeed. Honestly after watching those and then the manhandling and outright violently aggressive treatment of peaceful protestors it still shocks me. It makes me realize many in LEO don’t care. The ones that do are getting swept up with the others.

in the "enlightened" bay area.. the big article in the front section today was a report on a local police agency.. vallejo.. they have killed several black men for little reason in the last few years.. the report found the agency out of date on training, a high disregard for authority, a feeling of superiority.. basically an old boys club of white guys. there was a long long list of corrections needed. this town is majority minority.. and a lower income place in the expensive bay area.
part of the problem is all these small police dept. who don't have the budget for modern staffing, training and so on.
there was a letter to the editor from a lawyer who suggested that the police be required to go through a 4 year academy.. so they really know the law and are well trained.

I saw the man walk in front of the officers that looked like they where trying to keep the crowd behind them and he chose not to listen and go around them. And when they took him down because he was fighting with them. From the angle you could not see if they where leaving on his neck or not. So i watched the same video as op and saw something completely different.

Lying and corruption seems to me to be a culture thing in many police departments. For fun someone should do an exercise in any given jurisdiction and go through reports on detainments and see how many read the exact same way, using the exact same words. Maybe it started out as laziness or a way to avoid tedious paperwork but gosh, it's shocking how many people are walking/driving around with glassy eyes and the odor of marijuana (or a broken tail light) which conveniently justifies the detainment. Serial Season Three dealt with this issue (and many others) by investigating the justice system in Cleveland and it revealed corruption and criminal behavior on the part of law enforcement on just about every level they investigated (from police departments to juvenile detention centers to county lock ups.) But nothing is ever done about it. I don't want to hear any more about how "not all police officers" because it's a systemic problem which continuously gets swept under the rug and the good police officers, whoever they are, aren't doing a damn thing about the rotten culture at the core of too many law enforcement agencies.

He did not break a law. I am never going to do what police tell me just because anymore. They do not have the right to impede a citizen from walking |

The police "brothers" will defend each other no matter what. Police culture is not normal. Protect each other at all costs. It is more than just a few bad apples. People still saying that are choosing to ignore what is right in front of them.

The police "brothers" will defend each other no matter what. Police culture is not normal. Protect each other at all costs. It is more than just a few bad apples. People still saying that are choosing to ignore what is right in front of them. I believe this with all my being. And I’ve said it before—this is coming from someone who has a LEO family. |

They don’t give a flying fuck. They are arrogant and truly believe they can do whatever they want because they have a badge and a gun. It’s disgusting and anyone who enables them, other law enforcement, Politicians, anyone who does not speak out against their actions including their families are equally disgusting.

Once again I see a bunch of cops who have no idea how to de-escalate. There’s a teacher quite that says our job is to share our calm—not join their chaos. I wish cops would learn this. They let their frustration dictate how they handled that situation.

I, on the other hand saw a man walking in a straight line ( confirmed by the double yellow lines at the side of the road which he was walking parallel to ). A policeman attempts to pass him and intentionally steps right in front of him. To avoid a coalition the man moves to his left to avoid contact, the policeman intentionally then also moves left and a coalition occurs which was inevitable when someone cuts right in front of someone else and purposely blocks their way. The man did nothing wrong except walk down a public road. If the policemen really wanted to get in front of them they should have walked at a quicker pace and got well in front of him so as to avoid a coalition.It seems that they were looking for a confrontation and they staged it to happen. |

I’ll be honest. Seeing videos like that NOW lead me to believe that the police officers in question are purposefully making a very strong statement about how they view their fellow citizens. And it ain’t good.

They let their frustration dictate how they handled that situation. This is what pisses me off and sets me off against LEOs in these video and those who defend them. They use their "fear of violence" to justify all manner of brutality - when, as we've seen, lots of service people, clerks, cashiers, etc. are also "afraid of violence". They don't get to leap over the counter and throttle people or kill them based on just their "fear". Police should be the most highly-trained, highly-skilled at determining danger and de-escalating first, killing last. Not the other way around. |

Slight hijack, I keep wondering when the fact that the U.S. has a gun problem will come into the limelight. I see the police brutality as an outgrowth of a brutal society. We treat children as inmates in their schools. We say it is for their safety, but they grow up with fear baked into their bones. The fires of fears are stoked by television and social media. We have 120 guns for every 100 people. How can we expect the police to be civil when we arm ourselves with deadly weapons that can kill our fellow citizens?
I had this conversation with a police officer who was gung ho suggesting my family should have a gun for protection. Yes, the same family that is so careless we barely remember to close the kitchen cabinets. He has since married my friend, sold his guns and moved to Canada.

I truly think the level of police brutality we are seeing in recent years is horrific. It saddens me to my core.
I watched the video without sound nor reading anything written. I opened this thread and clicked on the video.
What I saw was a group of police officers spread out and casually walking down a street with some civilians more of less behind them. Then up the street we can see all kinds of flashing lights indicating there is some type of incident going on. I then viewed the police officers as trying to establish a police break, much like they frequently do on the freeways near me. - I am absolutely allowed to drive on my freeways whenever I want, but I would never dream of trying to squeeze past police cars because it is my right to drive on the freeway. - Next I see a man trying to get around what I perceive as a police break. The officers then take him down. Yes, they absolutely used too much force. However, we just don't know the whole story. We don't know what the incident ahead on the road is about. We don't know if the man in question had already been asked to step back. We don't know that the police officer who stopped in front of him did it go be an ass or because he thought it might be a subtle way of saying stay back. We don't know if the man uttered something unacceptable as he bumped into the police officer.
I'm not trying to justify police brutality, I'm just playing devil's advocate. I truly believe there is more to this story than what that clip shows.

Police violence/brutality is not warranted EVER, no ones life was in danger, no weapons, and the police officer CREATED the collision. And you are 100% unequivocally wrong. We BOTH saw exactly the same video. We did not watch 2 different versions. |

I have a close family member who is a retired LEO. He just doesn't get it. As far as he's concerned, he was a good cop, he never stood up for or covered up for the bad cops (which unfortunately affected his career since he wasn't considered a "team player" in his department) and it bothers him tremendously when he hears/reads the anti-LEO messages out there. It puts him on the defensive and shuts down the conversation. But he's my elder, and not my dad, so I'm not comfortable pushing it with him. He will either have an epiphany or he won't.

It's shocking to me (not really) that people can look at behavior like that and justify it. What about this man? What did he do to deserve to be arrested?
