I have actually made this before, almost exactly as described (I would add some garlic). I thought it was good.

I would eat them! My parents eat meat but have always made vegetarian cabbage rolls. Just rice, onion, shredded carrot and probably some other stuff. No beans. They are amazing!

My Polish mom makes fantastic traditional cabbage rolls. She also makes a version for our vegetarian cousin. Rice with caramelized onions and sauteed mushrooms is the filling. Yum. Your idea sounds tasty too.

I would absolutely eat that. Though I might make the regular cabbage rolls using Yves ground round instead.

Your idea sounds tasty too. The girlie doesn't like the texture of mushrooms. Plus she believes that somebody is going to make a mistake and put a poison one in the box. Thus beans!

I'm Polish too and cabbage rolls just have a meat connotation to me so I wouldn't eat it. Plus I wouldn't pick it up not knowing what was inside.

Well, it's not like you'd be picking it up off some random street corner. I'm sure whomever cooked them would tell their recipients what's inside. Such a weird response.

I was born in Canada many moons ago, but I didn't know how to say anything in English other than Hi! when I started Kindergarten. I speak, read and write Polish and our 24yo daughter currently lives in Kraków.

So what you're saying is that you don't have conversations about the food with the people you're dining with? If not, that's really weird. In my world, the conversation would be something like: MEGMC: "Hey grinningcat, I know you're a vegetarian so I just wanted to let you know that these cabbage rolls are vegetarian!" ME: "Really? That's cool. Thanks for letting me know. I would have passed them otherwise. What did you put in the filling?" MEGMC: "White beans, rice and a bit of onion" ME: "Sounds good." (puts one or two on the plate) Lots of foods have a "meat connotation"... do you avoid all of them too?

I like to go back for seconds... ETA: And I assume they are the huge rolls not the teeny tiny ones that are more like finger food.

Meatless cabbage rolls are big in my Ukrainian family - my mom makes awesome ones. Her filling is just rice and onion - no beans. They are even better baked with a tomato sauce.

These all sound delicious. My 10-year-old self would never have believed that one day I'd be salivating over beans wrapped in cabbage.

Beans are for more protein. definitely go with the white beans, I thought they were good when I made them. I also second the tomato sauce on top.

My maternal grandparents spoke it to me, and I understood it as a child, but 40+ years later, I really only use the curse words. My SoCal born beach bum husband cusses in Polish now too, so I consider that a win.
