Title says it all. Dealing with it in my family. Looking for real-life experiences from others.

Only as it pertains to patients in my care. I haven't researched it because it sounds like a bullshit diagnosis the ER docs or hospitalists give to tell people to lay off the ganj when they don't have another answer.
But then again we occasionally see waves of these people and i wonder if they got the bad weed!
The treatment on my end is IV fluids, antiemetics, and stop with the weed. Don't know of anything further as it seems to be self limiting.
I should probably investigate further so thanks for bringing this up.

It's characterized by cyclic vomiting episodes that return with frequency and no known commonality among episodes. It's "diagnosed" more by elimination of everything else rather than a test for it. So the family member has been a user for 18 months, with 12 months of episodes, about 1 every two months ranging in duration from 1-2 days to a week. 3 CT scans, 1 HIDA scan, 1 colonoscopy and 1 endoscopy... all normal.

It seems like there's a simple fix?
ETA: That sounds super dismissive and I didn't mean it that way. But like any kind of medication one doesn't tolerate well, discontinuing it is generally the best - and sometimes only - solution. Are there complicating factors here?

We see a lot of users come in with vague abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting. Work them up, down, and around. Pretty much are advised to quit using.

The family member needs to completely and totally give up using marijuana. Have seen it mistaken for other things and it continues until they completely stop. These patients tend to get the million dollar work up to rule out a whole lot of other things. It is indeed very real and not a bullshit diagnosis by any means. Astute ER and GI docs are getting pretty good at figuring this one out. Earlier on, it was thought that it took years of pot use for it to develop but that doesn't seem to be the case. It doesn't happen with a single use but does involve some amount of regular use. It's become far more common in areas where it is legal.
One key feature is relief with taking a hot shower.

My doctor warned me about this when she wrote for my medical marijuana card. Problem is, there's no way of knowing if or when it will hit a person. Chances get worse with increased use, but there are people who use it daily and never get sick.
Also there's something called scromiting: vomiting and screaming at the same time. Look it up. It's real.
I don't use MJ... don't like it, and I find these issues too scary.

The cannabis I use is legal. I buy it in a store that looks like a jewellery store. I have never taken enough to feel nauseous. I also use edibles and they are pure. I have never had a problem. The stuff they are using could be cut with something else and if it’s not legal in those states I wouldn’t buy it.

Also not all people can consume it. I can’t drink wine and we are wine lovers. I am the odd one out. It bums me out because I eat a bite of an edible and there they are drinking beautiful red liquid.

Had a friend who had this in college. Cured itself when no one would smoke with her any more because she threw up in their dorm rooms every time. And I don't mean that to sound as cavalier as it does - she really stopped because of peer pressure to stop.

I'm not sure if that is what my mom has, but both times she tried marijuana she got violently ill (vomiting) and was in bed with a migraine for 2 days, so she doesn't use marijuana. Why would anyone use marijuana, if it made them ill? If I had an adult in my family that was smoking weed and getting sick, I would probably just roll my eyes and wait for them to get tired of it. If they were determined to keep smoking, I would suggest keeping a log of how they felt after using each strain, (keeping track of the terpene test results if it's purchased from a dispensary) to see if there is something in particular that is disagreeing with them.

I've also only seen it in patients. We had one that had intense abdominal pain and vomiting. She would use marijuana to feel better but then it would come back again. She had every test under the sun. When she didn't use, she would feel ok. Then she would show up back in the ED within a day of using. I felt really bad for her family because she would become inconsolable. She would scream and crawl on the floor. It was impossible to care for her.
ETA: I've also heard of the hot shower to help

Damn it! This will be my luck. I’m looking forward to trying it when I retire. I already have a friend planning to get me edibles. And my luck I’ll have waited 40 yrs and have this reaction! Retirement is still a ways off but a girl needs a plan!
I am sorry about your family member. You didn’t mention if it’s legal or not. That becomes a multi faceted issue. Hopefully if it’s legal and medicinal, they can find a replacement drug. On the other hand, if it’s illegal use, I hope they DON’T find a replacement drug. Kwim?

Thank you everyone for your insight. melissa I appreciate your candor. We had a GI/ED doc suggest it earlier this year (or late last year) but it sounded so unreal. This last ED visit (and subsequent hospitalization) it was strongly suggested and thank goodness they sent in a nurse with lots of experience in it who gave said family member a good talking to. So far 10 days clean. Still some occasional vomiting but things seem to be improving each day.

I've never heard of this before. Coincidentally my sister just got me some edibles because I won't smoke anything and I stuck them right in the freezer. I can't take pain meds because they make me sick so I'm wondering if I'll have an issue with this. I'm a big scardy cat and am afraid to try them.

keithurbanlovinpea......I hope your family member will be okay! I have read quite a bit about cannabis recently, and surprised I've never heard of this ! Clearly, I need to do more reading! I only started trying (legal ) edibles last week for severe pain, but now I wonder if it's a good idea.
