I have the honor of giving you the Kickoff Challenge for CARDtober! If you are participating on a challenge team, you can earn points. If you are not on a team, I hope you will still participate, because it’s a lot of fun! (Sadly, I am not participating on a team this year.) If you complete all 31 challenges, you not only earn the points for each challenge, but you get a 50 point bonus for your team! For this first challenge, I am giving you two options. Please share your creations below, in this thread. You get 1 point just for sharing. Option #1 for CARDtober Challenge #1: Make a box card. This challenge is worth 3 points just for doing a box card instead of 1 point, because box cards take more time and effort to make. You can earn 1 bonus point if you make it a Fall OR Halloween box card. Twist: for an additional 1 point, add a window to the front of your box card, with something to see on the first panel. In this example, the window is a tombstone, with a little ghost on the bottom of the first panel. The lower portions of the panels are usually hidden, so it adds a fun surprise element. My sample below would net a total of 6 points if I were on a team (3 for the box card, 1 point for the bonus, 1 point for the twist, and 1 point for sharing it). If your project also uses other challenge criteria (which should be listed on the Challenge board), then you could earn even more points. A box card can seem intimidating if you have never done one before, but they are not as difficult as they seem, and they are fun to make. I highly recommend the video in the link below, even if you have made box cards in the past. Her technique is the easiest way to make box cards: Best Box Card Tutorial
CARDtober Challenge #1, Option #2: For the sake of those who feel making box card is more of a challenge than they can tackle, or for those doing layouts, you can choose to do the following option instead of a box card, for 1 point: Make a card or layout with dimension. Use layering, pop dots or foam tape, etc. For my card below, I used 2 layers of craft foam to add depth between the tombstone silhouette and the base of the card below. The little Ghost is recessed within the tomb. You get 1 bonus point if you make it a fall or Halloween card or layout. Twist: for an additional 1 point, add a window to your card, with something showing behind, such as the sentiment inside the card. If you are doing a layout, you could include hidden journaling in some way, such as a pocket at the top of your layout, with a tab to pull the journaling up to see, or a flap to lift. If you want extra points for your team, you can do both challenges! (But they only count as 1 challenge for the 50 point bonus.) HAVE FUN AND SHARE YOUR PROJECTS BELOW!

Thanks for starting us off with a BANG, scrapnnana! And thanks for the great examples and the tutorial.
I don't usually do Halloween cards, so prob won't get the extra bonus, but will attempt to meet this challenge with my Christmas supplies. Before I drag those out again, I need to finish the last of the SKETCHtember sketches and make some room on my counter.

When I first started making box cards, I used a scoreboard and trimmer. Now I use electronic cutting files. I created my own cutting file for the box card. The dies are too expensive.

I had so much info in this first post, that I think it is easy to overlook. I’ll fix that.

Thanks so much for the challenge! I haven't made a box card for awhile. Like scrapnnana , I wanted to use a cut file, but I was too cheap to buy one so first I had to make one. I wanted my "window" to be like when we were kids and collected pretty leaves and our moms ironed them between wax paper. That was only partly successful. Is wax paper different than when we were kids??

Great challenge! I really enjoy making box cards, so I will definitely do that. Thanks for that video link too. I never thought about adding things before putting it together!

I just put some leaves my dgs found in our yard in a fold of wax paper for him in a book. Hoping they survived the car trip home from here and to school this week!
I plan to try a box card "from scratch". Prob won't work out nearly as well as a cut file, but I always have to try it the hard way before I am convinced to just use my Silhouette...

My first ever box pop-up card! I have to admit, when I saw that this was our challenge, I was definitely frightened. But, I was determined to participate in Cardtober, so I said what the hey and looked up a tutorial online. I don't have a die-cutting machine or a cricut, so I measured and scored by hand. I think it came out okay for my first attempt! What do yours look like when lying flat/how would you send it in an envelope? jjpeapea love how you created a beautiful fall arrangement with leaves and like the window idea too, it would be beautiful with a battery operated candle inside and have it shine thru. scrappyrabbit Great job👏👏👏. I would never think that this is your first box card. Love the bright colors and that you decorated the outside

azcrafty I love the scene that your card sets. It's a little spooky but not overly. I also love the interactive piece to it, so cool! jjpeapea great fall leaves card!

Here is my first and only box card, it doesn't get the extra points for the panel but over all I think it turned out okay. I do believe it's a total of 5 points for my team. (I'm brand new to these so if I got the points wrong please let me know!) Attachments:

A note about points: you can claim one point for creating the card and one for sharing it here (2), plus (3) for it being a box card, plus (1) bonus point for it being a Halloween card. Do 6 points so far.
If you had added the window, you could have claimed (1) for the twist and (5) for a bonus for both card and twist. So you would have started with a dozen points.
Plus, take a look at all of the October challenges when they are locked at the end of October 3rd, because there could be several more points to be claimed for this card there, as well.
Ask as many questions as you like. It seems complicated to start, but it gets easier to score your creations: I promise.

scrappyrabbit , that is SOOO stinkin' CUTE!!! (and there is a challenge to use the card challenge on a page, so Cha ching! Extra point!)
But card makers who are not signed up for an October Team, don't worry about the points! Just create your cards for the challenges. Bring 'em on. We'd LOVE to see them!

I'm going to try a box card but it looks rather complicated to me. So for now (to make sure I get the challenge done), here's a simple fall card with the sentiment popdotted and layers at the bottom using Echo Park's Sept 2019 kit

okay - it took me an hour, is more than a little crooked, and not nearly as creative as the rest of you but it IS a box card and I'm pleased with myself for figuring it out - sort of. And photographing it...well that wasn't the best picture I've ever taken. I couldn't find actual directions (just videos and my brain doesn't do those well) but I did find a printable template except I had to resize it to fit my cardstock.

Linda, your slimline card looks great! I really like how you made the middle dot of bling at the bottom a smaller size. Why have I never thought to do that? I am proud of you for making the box card, too! Congrats! It turned out well, and I’m proud of you for tackling it, especially with a printable template. I also appreciate that you did both challenges!

This one makes me nervous but I feel like I at least have to try. Luckily I have a few weeks to get my act together! The samples so far are creative and clever—I’m really enjoying them! I’m just not sure if I can put something like this together. I’m gonna try though!!

linda I love your little ghost popping up ,is that a die? The video I linked up has written description in the drop box Thanks - it and the sentiment are both part of the same cut-apart card and the spider is from another from the same sheet. I didn't have any Halloween dies to use.
