So who watched 19 Kids and Counting last night and saw Ben and Jessa get engaged?
He picked a very beautiful spot but come on, for sure she knew he was going to ask her to get engaged the minute she watched his message on the tablet! Seemed like everyone was trying to keep it a secret. I felt like I was watching a staged show the whole hour.
She sure is a pretty girl though!

It did feel more staged than usual. I kept thinking, "Poor old Ben could not have come up with all of this!" and wondered if the directors/writers of the show most of the planning.
Isn't Jessa's hair LONG?!?! I wonder if she'll trim it when the baby comes. Seems like a demanding head of hair to keep with the beautiful spiral curls that they've shown the sisters helping with.
Was Ben fairly articulate for the actual proposal? I got "all Duggared out" and switched off the tv while everyone was on the train.

I agree that she knew it was coming, it was more about the special memories he was giving her and ending at that beautiful chapel.
I wondered though, why Jill & Derrick weren't involved. I mean, Josh & Anna were involved even though they weren't actually there, but no mention of Jill & Derrick. And I already double-checked.....Jessa's engagement actually took place in Aug, whereas Jill's wedding was in June, so it's unlikely that they were away on honeymoon.

I guess I just preferred the simplicity and the element of surprise of Jill and Derrick's engagement.

I guess I just preferred the simplicity and the element of surprise of Jill and Derrick's engagement. I'm not sure I would call having a song written, having the family and tv cameras there filming, and having the songwriter performing the song in a public place "simplicity".

Yes, Derrick's proposal was in line with 'we're making a TV show-- let's do something worthy of the air time'. Maybe the producers feel they have to keep beating the previous scenario. Makes you wonder what's next (for the next umpteen proposals of their children).

Which to me seems totally contrary to the image they want to portray, yet absolutely believable and not surprising.

But comparing the two engagements, theirs was the more simple one.
My son got engaged two months ago in Banff and I can guarantee there were no cameras or extra family members there. There was a random couple who came along just after he asked her and took their picture though .

The chapel was so gorgeous! I liked the scavenger hunt but I think she just wanted it done quickly to see Ben. For sure he had help, glad both sides of the family were there. Jessa is pretty but she doesn't come across very friendly or even kind. Jana is my favorite and I am really liking Joy. Loved how she said how she really felt when Ben came along instead of saying the party line.
Also when they held hands at dinner, looked like her parents were going to freak out. Loved how Jessa didn't let go. She probably knew right then that Ben was going to propose soon.

I didn't know she was pregnant! I thought the other sister was pregnant (the one married to Derick-Jill)

I haven't seen he episode yet, but I'll comment anyway... ] There are many couples that get engaged, and it's not a surprise. The fun of going thought the event was special to them. It's okay if she wasn't surprised at that moment.
And I also agree that Derrick's proposal wasn't simple, but it was pretty romantic and special between them.

Agreed. I think Jessa is the most independent-minded one of the girls so far. She seems like she will run her household Very matter-of-fact. And I really think she wanted to launch herself at Ben after he proposed Jill seems very sweet, as does Jana. Joy and Jinger seem to have a great sense of humor. I don't think I will watch next week--I don't find Josh watchable.

I like watching their kids Makenzie and Michael, they're too cute and make me laugh with some of the things they say.

It really shows that Jessa is not comfortable on camera. She always comes across as kind of cranky and impatient, IMO. Her reaction when he finally got down on one knee was very sweet though.

I still don't get how Jim Bob is okay with this marriage, but grilled Derick about his intentions and job, etc. Ben has nothing planned for the future and is so immature. Yikes.

I think it'd be hard to feel any kind of connection between two people in a relationship when they aren't allowed to hold hands, hug, kiss or have any kind of privacy when texting or talking on the phone.

But maybe that's still to come in the episodes. Jim Bob is a pretty smart guy...he's not going to let things get too far if he doesn't think it's wrong.

Nope they showed that in the engagement episode and the question was not asked. He just gave permission. Didn't even ask to talk to Michelle like he did will Derrick.

But, if it was all repetitive, then it wouldn't make good tv. Everything has to be different, or we wouldn't be watching. The whole conversation between Jim Bob and Ben seemed staged to me. I think it was a re-inactment. LOL! I just take all of this with a grain of salt. Jim Bob must have a pretty iron clad contract with TLC to allow only what he wants them to show.
Not that I don't enjoy the show. It's one of my guilty pleasures and I have to admit that I like the family. But, I think Jim Bob must have a lot of control.... over everyone.
