Once there's a chill in the air, it's time to fire up the crockpot to make shredded chicken sandwiches. I've been searching for the huge thread where these were discussed, but in 2015, someone mentions that that thread was (possibly) on the old board. I thought I used ideas from that thread to make the best version of them I've had, and my brother was crazy about them. He's asked me to make them again, and I have no recollection of what I did differently. Anyone remember if this truly was a thread on the old board? Does anyone still have access to it? StephDRebel,I think you were involved in the discussion; any recollection of it? Thanks, Peas!

Thanks, Mike. It's basically shredded chicken breast, a can or two of "cream of" soup, a sleeve or two of Ritz crackers and some seasonings. I remember I made it creamier than usual last time, and I found a recipe that recommends poultry seasoning. That could have been my new ingredient the last time around. I'm always frustrated when I think I'll remember my recipe creativity and then someone asks me to recreate it and I don't have a clue. Anyway, I appreciate the feedback.

Super simple.
Chicken (rotisserie, baked, boiled, or canned) Cream of some crap soup I only use one can, I dont like them too goopy) Poultry seasoning and a sleeve of crackers or a packet of stove top.
(My aunt just uses canned chicken warmed and its delicious but not quite the same.)

This reminds me of the "Crack Chicken" Instant Pot recipe I see sometimes. I've not gotten to try it yet.

I'm in Ohio (have been for 43 years and I'm 45 lol!) and I have no idea what's going on with the shredded chicken sandwiches. 😂
I've had maybe one shredded chicken sandwich at a potluck or something but I've never made it myself. I've never heard of this recipe!
Interesting!

I’m from Ohio too. I use a large can (48 oz) of Sweet Sue boneless chicken, 1 can Campbells cream of chicken soup, and a sleeve of finely crushed Zesta crackers. I put in several grinds of black pepper. I don’t drain the chicken. Heat up in sauce pan and serve on buns. Don’t add milk or water to the soup. My Mom always used those brands so that is what I use. Sometimes I substitute a sleeve of finely crushed butter crackers, crushed potato chips, or a big package of StoveTop stuffing mix that I crush up instead of Zesta crackers. I don’t like my shredded chicken sandwiches too soupy so that is why I use only 1 can. If it is a bit dry, I just add a little water or chicken broth so it is moist. I sometimes bake several chicken breasts and then shred the meat after it had cooked instead of the Sweet Sue cooked chicken. www.walmart.com/ip/SWEET-SUE-Boned-Chicken-Gluten-Free-Snack-High-Protein-Snacks-50oz-can/10449034

Another Ohio person here. It seems to be an Ohio thing. My mother made them often. Also, if you go to fairs or art festivals or things like that there is usually a group like Kiwanis selling them.

I was wondering if they were talking about crack chicken as well (before the ingredients were listed). But the only similarity between this and the crack chicken I make is the chicken. Lol I’m curious what purpose the crackers serve? Don’t they just get soggy?

We serve it at fundraisers, football games, etc. I usually crock pot it if we are spread out for meal times or use the stove and put it in a thermos for on the go.

Whatever you have. We are poor folk eating poor folk food. My preference is Ritz crackers but I've used Ritz, saltines, stove top, just not cheez its. The color is too much 😫 They are crushed so they're just a binding agent/thickener that add some flavor.

My British palate rejects all dishes that use canned cream of soup as an ingredient. This one sounds particularly disgusting. 😄

And then you put all that on a roll or bun?
It sounds sort of like poppyseed chicken, which is a total comfort splurge meal I enjoy once a year or so.

I’m just reading in fascination trying to imagine this concoction. Never heard of a shredded chicken sandwich so I opened the thread to see and was not expecting this. It does not sound appetizing but I’d like to try one to see but don’t want to make a whole recipe because I’m pretty sure it would end up getting thrown out. I feel like we are left out of a lot of the “interesting” food trends here in the PNW 😂😂

I have never heard of doing this! what do you put on the bun with it? anything?? or just the chicken mixture by itself, on a bun? It seems like it would need lettuce, or something else, to go with it... ?? I've seen a shredded buffalo chicken sandwich filling recipe that sounds kind of good, but I've never heard of these before.

Thanks, Steph, for the recipe. I have the basics but just thought there might have been variations that I might have tried from the previous thread.
Ditto to Steph's reply about the crackers. They do just thicken it and add flavor.
I'm not aware of anyone adding anything to it when serving it, though I suppose you could eat it with a slice of melted cheese (like a tuna melt). I also like mine with a bit of mustard, especially if the cook who made it prefers it to be dry.
There is a similar recipe floating around right now that is being called crack chicken sandwiches. I think it includes ranch seasoning, cheese and bacon cooked into the chicken.
