I am in the process of scanning older professional photos of my daughter from when she was a baby. I currently have them sorted by month and stored in archival poly sleeves. I really want to store them vertical in some sort of plastic storage bin (small) but the sleeves are flimsy and they won't stand up straight. I was thinking about orders some rigid cardboard envelopes (similar to those you can mail photos in) but am worried that the cardboard might damage the photo in some way. I still plan of keeping the photos in the poly sleeves, so that should protect the photos right?

The answer is maybe. It should but it all depends. Think of it like a sandwich. You are putting all of these materials together in a sandwich. If the archival poly sleeves aren't sealed in some way the acid/lignin and whatever else is in the cardboard is going to migrate to the photos. Not to mention what gasses will out gas from the plastic storage bin. It's terribly frustrating, isn't it? But don't give up! It is worth protecting those precious photos and it doesn't have to cost and arm and a leg to do it.
The place I do most of my shopping for these types of materials is Light Impressions. Their website is http://www.lightimpressionsdirect.com. There is also two I found while I hit google called archivalmethods.com (but I don't know anything about their reputation) and also printfile.com (Print File has been around for years and has a good reputation).
I hope this helps.
