I think people have FINALLY gotten the message that Voting MATTERS! Seriously though, while I agree it’s awesome to see people engaged and wanting to exercise their right to vote - 5 hours waiting to do so, is asinine. And I say that coming from a country where it’s compulsory to vote, so everyone eligible must. I’ve never waited longer than 15-20 minutes at a busy time. In a city of 5 million. I hope this is something that is addressed, as opposed to sitting on Moscow Mitch’s desk for months, after this election. People deserve better.

I have never waited more than 20 minutes. And that was because we were 20 minutes early, so it always amazed me when I heard stories like this.
It’s quite obvious it’s voter suppression when you look at it. And it makes me angry.

It was worth every minute of waiting in line. I’m not surprised that lines are longer now when voting has opened a bit later. It shouldn’t be that way, but when you have the GOP trying to suppress voting and committing voter fraud by installing fake ballot drop off boxes, it is what it is.

I started to fill out my ballot today. I was in my home. I got to look through my election booklet and look at the judges and how they were rated. I actually felt like I was making an informed decision compared to when I used to vote in a little booth and felt rushed because I was in a long line. Now I will still drive it to the DMV where there is a ballot slot that goes into a building, but it is also on my way to a store I need to go to tomorrow anyway. I think this year will have record voting in most states.

I hope early voters can persevere because I imagine wait times on Nov 3 will be much worse. In VA on Election Day if you’re in line before polls close you get to vote. I do hope the same holds true for states that practice voter repression.

This is what I don't understand..... compulsory voting here, vast majority having to vote on the same day, and I've never waited more than 10 minutes. Is it because they reduced the number of polling stations to one per county, as I read on a thread the other day??

I have no idea how it's supposed to be more safe to have everyone in the same place.

It's because in largely minority areas (inner city), they are underserved and the Governor of Georgia basically had collusion with the former Governor to win through voter suppression. It's not by accident. ETA there are many more than one per county but I don't know how many there are where she is as opposed to where I live. This sounds like an excellent time to educate myself!

When you remember that voter suppression is the best way for the GOP to win, it makes much more sense. "But today, voting itself is broken. Our system has buckled under the weight of repressive voter ID laws, toxic partisan and racial gerrymandering, voter roll purges and precinct closures that disproportionately target minority voters. The intentional elimination of Sunday early voting days when black voters are most likely to head to the polls even efforts nationwide to criminalize voter registration drives. How far apart are your polling booths? Do you have to vote in a particular place?
It's so different to our experience in Australia! There are probably 6 places I could vote within walking distance of my house so if it was busy at one (in our case that would be anything more than a 15 minute wait) I would just go somewhere else.

You either have to vote at your assigned polling place on Election Day, or, if you vote early, you have to go to one of very limited places that will accept early votes in your county. Fairfax County, Va has 1.1 MILLION people. When I voted early, in September, there was only ONE site - the infamous Fairfax Co Govt Center open. That is all that has been open and will be open until Wednesday. Starting October 14th, 13 site branches for early voting will open, with 1 more opening on the 17th (Saturdays only at that site). All for 1.1 million people. Election Day will see our local polling places open. There are over 200 of them, which makes sense given our population. It would also make sense to have more early voting places open this election due to the pandemic.

I think this year will have record voting in most states. Prior to this year, we always got a sample ballot at home 2-3 weeks before Election Day so you could go thru it and prepare yourself. This year, since they sent ballots to every registered voter we did not get a sample ballot. I will miss going to the voting booth if this ends up being a permanent change in NJ however, despite that, I support my state going to vote by mail. I just think more people will have access to voting that way.

I have no idea how it's supposed to be more safe to have everyone in the same place. my town went to 1 this year because every single registered voter recurved a ballot in the mail ( or will by 1 week after the registration deadline ) so anyone insisting on voting on Election Day in person will have to fill out a paper ballot similar to a provisional ballot. ( because their actual ballot was mailed to them ) therefore they feel they do not need all the many polling locations. Also they won’t need the voting machines or the voting logs because it will be a “provisional“ ballot and will therefore need to be verified that someone did not fill out your real ballot, that you are a registered voter, etc before it will be counted, therefore the poll worker does not have to check you as in a normal year. If your ballot that was mailed to you was used they then have to determine which ballot is valid. There’s going to be less work at the polls on Election Day but much more work after Election Day to verify all those ballots.

In VA each county runs its elections. In Loudoun (much less dense than Fairfax noted above), the waits have been less than an hour, 10 min to no wait. Counties are divided into precincts and you can only vote at your assigned precinct - usually a local school or community center. Here in NoVa it’s never hard to vote, but 2020 is the exception. Normally, presidential years see the highest turnout and waits before may be an hour or so, especially as people vote on their way to/from work. For mid term and local elections turnout is pretty low and usually no wait. Shamefully, many Americans are very blase about voting.

Is it because they reduced the number of polling stations to one per county, as I read on a thread the other day?? In short, yes. Part of this is the effect of the Supreme Court gutting a portion of the Voting Rights Act that required something called "pre-clearance"for changes that affected voting rights. States with a past history of voter discrimination (mostly Southern, former Confederate states) used to have to get approval to make changes like moving or closing polling places, changes in voter registration requirements, access to absentee ballots, etc. We are seeing all sorts of GOP chicanery to manipulate people's ability to exercise their right to vote by tactics that would have previously been illegal or required pre-clearance. Yes, partly unfortunately - voter suppression is real here - one good thing about compulsory voting is it doesn’t work as a tactic there. That one per district was in TX, although that thankfully got stopped, by a federal court. But that’s unreal to me, court challenges have to be mounted for people to exercise their right to vote fairly.

Every state I've lived in assigns you a polling place based on where you live. Here in GA there are multiple locations where we can do early voting, but I think you have to stay within your county (unsure about that) and public transportation can be very limited as far as getting to a less crowded voting place.
