"My poll-worker training in Greene County, New York, consisted of two, two-and-a-half-hour training sessions, held in an unventilated room in a senior drop-in center, where a lot of masks had fallen below noses. At one point, we abandoned all pretense of social distancing to practice using the voting machines. Come November 3, our charge will be to administer the most basic level of the democratic process. We will be, you could say, the guardians of democracy. We were paid $60 for the training. We’ll be paid $225 for the 16 and a half hours we’ll work on Election Day, at polling locations I suspect won’t be perfectly COVID-compliant. But I’m not in it for the money, and I’ve got an N95 mask, gloves, a face shield, and five canisters of FDA-approved wipes. I’m up for the risk. I signed up for this. I’m glad I did. It has helped me appreciate the labyrinthine weirdness of our nation’s electoral system—and the importance of reforming it." www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/10/five-hours-training-and-285-guard-democracy/616719/Who wants to reform it when you can just keep cheaping out on it and then blaming it when you lose? I've been hired as a Deputy Clerk here. I have to go through 20 hours of virtual training.

I worked in AZ in 2018 and it was pretty well done. Of course, that was pre-pandemic. All training was online anyway, so I'm sure that hasn't changed. I signed up to work again this year but haven't heard back yet - hopefully this means that they have plenty of people and don't need me! They did say that every poll worker would have PPE given to them on election day.

Imagine - New York State doing things in an unsafe way. I'm in the midst of my poll worker training, and it's being handled in a safe and effective way. tomorrow We head to our assigned polling stations to do training on site. All safety procedures apply. This is not to say that the draconian ways of casting ballots don't need improvement, but I really get sick to death of the correlations drawn for the entire country based on the experiences of our two most populated areas in the country.

I have been a poll worked since 2000, and a chief inspector, head of the polling site since 2007. I didn't work in April or August since I was dealing with a cardiac issue.
Our clerk has a great set up and I am not worried about the few minutes someone will be in our room. I am concerned about spending 16+ hours with some of the workers, as they are choosing to live life as usual. 3 of them just posted pictures in a bar, no social distancing. Our area is in dire straits right now. That is my worry.......
I get paid $150 per election. Not in it for the money. Before retirement, I would take Tuesday off to work the election.

I have to take a minute to brag on Harris County, TX. We are a geographically huge county with more than 5 million people in it and 2.8 million registered voters. Our County Clerk and County Judge (like a mayor for the county) are in charge of elections. Both are young (34 and 29, respectively), both POC, and one was elected largely because of Democratic enthusiasm for Beto in 2018, with the other being appointed after the previous clerk had health issues and resigned. There’s been a lot of GOP negativity about how these young folks can’t possibly run things as well as the old white people did before them.
They are killing it. We’re two days in. Voter turnout is shattering previous records for early voting. Lines are short, and if they are not, it’s a matter of a few clicks to find a nearby place with a shorter line. Drive through voting is available for those who do not feel comfortable going into the polls, but inside, the workers are doing an amazing job. Distancing is accomplished, everyone has masks, they give you a little plastic cover for your finger to use on the machine and an alcohol wipe to use afterward.
These two have gone toe to toe with the GOP establishment in Texas to make sure voting is safe and easy for all of our county.
Lina Hidalgo and Christopher Hollins. Watch out for them. Democratic up and comers to be sure.
