Powdered milk works fine and better for your than Coffemate. Coffemate has a lot of chemicals, whereas powdered milk does not.

I think that powdered milk IS an ingredient in (1) dry coffee creamers and (2) things like the instant international coffee flavors, so I don't see why not to use it in coffee.

If you know a bread baker I bet they’d let you try it first. Or if you end up not liking it give it to a bread baker. I think it will be just fine in coffee.

It has been extremely difficult to find here since March!! Just found a 64 oz bag at Walmart for $15.00.
I try to keep some on hand for cooking and it works well.

We call it "lazy latte". We have to bring our groceries from the store on foot and then haul it all up the stairs and we live on the top floor of our building so we always have some powdered milk for those days when we run out or couldn't add a bottle of milk to our already too heavy grocery bag. It's totally fine.
Boil water in kettle, add a decent amount of dry powder and voilà, done. It does taste more like pasteurised milk than fresh milk.

Never. When I was very young and we were "between paychecks", my mother used it as milk for us and I think it's the most disgusting thing ever created. I can't stand the taste, the texture - ugh. I wouldn't buy it just because of the memory.

I wouldn't buy it just because of the memory. Ditto My mother used to mix powdered milk with cold water and add it to the milk gal as we drank it. Mind you we had well water with sulfur in it. It was how she afforded her cigarettes because powdered milk was much much cheaper back then. It was the source of much animosity and many unpleasant arguments because she would get mad when we wouldn’t drink it. My did didn't drink much milk so he never noticed. I really don’t know if I’d actually like it in my tea, as the taste is so associated with such bad memories attached to it. Although at the beginning of the pandemic I did get a tin of powdered goat milk and I’ve used that when I run out and it hasn’t been bad. I use powdered coconut milk in my cold brew iced coffee latte because I cold brew that in coconut water so it goes with it. Coconut water is sweet so no need to add sugar, plus it has electrolytes so it’s a summer treat when it super hot out and I’m working outside. It’s the only coffee I drink.

I also grew up on dry milk when money was tight, but it has good memories too. My grandparents took us on a road trip every summer. My grandma would bring a jar of instant coffee with dry milk mixed in it, and drank it with hot tap water. A couple times a trip she would let me & my sister have half a cup. It was my introduction to coffee and probably why I drink it black, but it worked just fine, even in lukewarm coffee.

Every time I run out of milk, I think, it will be fine. No, it's not. But I love evaporated milk in other things. I use evaporated milk as a substitute for half-&-half or cream in soup recipes. It tastes fine to me when I do that. I’ve never put it in coffee, however. I just buy shelf-stable fairlife milk to have in hand for when I run out of fresh milk.

I would try the powder milk. I hate the flavor of coffee mate, so much that I rather not drink the coffee.

Ultra pasteurized half and half has a long expiration date. That’s what we use.
