Our governor has decided that now movie theaters can open at 25% capacity. But none of the ones in New York City area nor a couple other spots that the positivity rate is high can open. We never opened or re-open movie theaters while other states did. But I digress He had to force a wedding of 10,000 people, yes 10,000 people to be canceled. abcnews.go.com/US/ny-shuts-10000-person-wedding-cuomo-reveals-covid/story?id=73671721

Washington hadn't opened movie theaters at all either. Apparently we're getting ready to allow them to open up to 25% now right though.
I think Regal has come out and said they are waiting on all their theaters (at this this ownership group).

If I had to gather 10,000 people for an event I do not know where I would find them.

I’m curious where that wedding would have been held?

It was in the Hasidic community. Mass gatherings in this community have been an issue with the governor since covid began. These neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens are currently considered covid hotspots.

Our theaters JUST opened back up last week at 20-25% capacity.
All of those "unlock Michigan" people were over the moon and flocked to the theaters.

I think opening the theaters at 25% is fine. Our restaurants are at 50% and the numbers where I live continue to be low.

As far as I can tell, there are no theaters open in King or Pierce county.

When I check listings, none are open in king/Pierce. Should have looked at AMC. My apologies.

We’ve had a couple of theaters open. I haven’t been, but they are the ones with reserved seating with big reclining seats, so each auditorium holds maybe 50-60 people at capacity. The rows are already more than 6’ apart with barriers, and they are separating parties by a couple of seats.

10,000!!!!!!!!!! People!
Did the wedding want to be a super spreader event?!
I'm disgusted by them. And glad it was shut down.

I'm disgusted by them. And glad it was shut down. It was in the Hasidic community. They have continued to not follow the mandates hence the uptick in cases in those areas of NYC.

Sounds like a gift grab to me. We also continue to have super spreader events here from religious groups. Patient Zero back in March was from a huge (illegal) wedding that was attended by many from New York.

I'm disgusted by them. And glad it was shut down. It was scheduled for tomorrow. No guarantee it will not happen in spite of the orders. They have claimed discrimination for the more recent mask regulators and shut downs in the hot spots.

Hi, I live in NYC. Yes, this is a Hasidic wedding - the grandson of a high profile Rabbi, I believe. Williamsburg and Borough Park, as well as a handful of other neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens, have had major issues with some (not all) Hasidic sects refusing to wear masks or keep gatherings small. In the peak of Covid, back in the spring, the FDNY had to shut down funeral services because hundreds of people were packed into small rooms, sans masks. Weddings as well. There was recently a riot in Borough Park, the Hasidic sect there was throwing their masks into a pile on the street and lighting them on fire, then cornering and attacking journalists. There was a measles outbreak in their community a few years ago as well. Please don't compare this to a movie theater if you're not familiar with what's going on here. Movie theaters are not important in a pandemic, sorry! I will link an article about this event. A few days later the leader of the group was arrested for inciting a riot, which led to his supporters surrounding the journalist's home until 2am, trying to get into the building. www.cbsnews.com/news/orthodox-jewish-protesters-borough-park-brooklyn-coronavirus-cuomo-lockdown/Please do not think I am against the Jewish faith - I have a distaste for ANY fundamentalist who endangers others, no matter their denomination. The people in NYC speaking the loudest against these actions are non-Hasidic Jewish residents, if there's any interest I recommend reading more on this before wondering why Cuomo had to step in. It's not something to joke about.... people are still dying.

I will link an article about this event. no one compared it to opening movie theaters. I might live in Upstate (near Rochester) but I am aware of what is and has gone on downstate. How can I not?? It's on the news daily. My point is this...10,000 people is ridiculous. But you watch, it will still happen and people will die.

Thank you kiera. I saw this thread last night and just wondered how the Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn and elsewhere got lumped into movie theaters reopening. I hate that every time the Hasidic community goes “anti Covid protocols” that it reflects poorly on the Jewish community as a whole. I assumed it was a Rabbi marrying, not his grandchild. Oy! Off to read your link.

They're now saying that the service will be for "close family" only, so we'll see how that goes.
