The car we bought last summer has a built-in system and I love it. It wasn't a deal breaker for buying the car, so I don't know if I would have paid for it as an option (the car is a 2013 model). I had a dash mounted GPS for my old van and would have kept using that if the new car hadn't come with a built-in.
We often travel out of service for the phones (CA-AZ), so I can't rely on them for navigation. It isn't only for directions that we use the system - we like knowing our estimated arrival time, distance left, etc.
I'm visual and like to see the map, so I wouldn't be as comfortable just listening to bluetooth directions. I'm curious, for those that use their phones, do you mount it on the dash so you can see the map or just listen to directions?

But your phone can play through the speakers and it's hands free. I really think built in navs are phasing out. Phones can do it all now. How the heck would I see the screen? I have to put my reading glasses on to see my screen, but I can't drive with my reading glasses. My in car Nav screen is nice and big and right in front of me. I would NEVER EVER EVER use my phone, and no matter how hands free it is, it's still not. Use still have to find and open up the app while you're driving which is a big no no for me. I don't look at the screen. It tells me what turn is coming up and where. And I turn it on before I drive so yes it is hands free.

I don't want a navigation system in my car. It's one more thing to get broken or need updating therefore costing me money. There's nothing a car system can do that I can't do from my iPhone so I just don't see a need.

I It amuses me the things that people can't live without these days haha. I grew up with maps. How did we ever survive?. [ That's nice. DH and I have worked in 11 different cities in five different states in the last six weeks. I don't regret not having to hunt down a place to buy a clumsy paper map every time we go to a new city.

No. I usually familiarize myself to where I'm going before I get behind the wheel of my car.

We were looking at cars and while the navigation system would be nice (and stop many arguments in the car!) it was a lot more. We had to upgrade and we would get navigation, etc. but it wasn't worth the amount they were charging.
I find that printing out and studying directions from mapquest works well for me! I don't trust gps, but it is nice as a back up so I don't have to look at my written directions if I am alone in the car.

Sorry. I really wasn't trying to be sarcastic in any manner. Technology is truly wonderful but so many forget how to survive without. I don't even know if you can buy maps anymore. I apologize if I offended anyone. Back in the day I did an adult paper route and they paid me extra to drive all the streets in our city and record every single address. It took me several months and tons of gas. Geez, life would have been so much easier if we could have simply pulled up the new systems.

I just bought a new car and would not have considered one without a GPS.

No, I'm another that uses my phone if I need it. But, I didn't think I'd love my back-up camera either, that came built into my new car, and now I don't know what I'd do without it .

I like having the built in navigation. I like to be able to refer to the map, as well as the verbal directions.

My car has navigation as part of on-star, but you have to pay an annual fee for it. It was free for 6 months and I really liked it...but not enough to pay for it. I have a garmin GPS that I have used for years and just started using the GPS in my iPhone.

I'm in outside sales. The vehicle I drive doesn't have it, so to me it's not a deal breaker. I've never had it so it's hard to miss what I haven't had.

No. I usually familiarize myself to where I'm going before I get behind the wheel of my car. You never take spur-of-the-moment side trips? That's half the fun of a road trip! We live out in the sticks so we do a LOT of driving, and to go anywhere usually means an hour or three drive away. Sometimes I have 3 or 4 towns on my list of places to go and I would never remember all of the routes of every place every time. I feel better having the Garmin and my phone handy.

It isn't even something I would consider, especially if it increases the cost of the car. I use my phone, you can purchase a number of non-data using gps apps these days, so I don't see a need for one built in to the car.

Lol never gonna happen in my life. Well I have TMobile LOL! I just posted this in my last post, but consider buying an app with preloaded maps that does not require data. I used one on my phone while traveling in the UK this summer, it worked perfectly. You can test some out free or buy one for like $20.

I use Waze on my phone. I don't look at the map when I'm driving. The nice Waze lady tells me what I need to do. I can hear it fine through my phone or if I'm feeling sassy, I can play it over the car speakers via Bluetooth.
I agree w/those that have said the built-in nav is just something else to break.

I have it on my 2013 Ford Escape (bought the car used, and it happened to have it), and it is TERRIBLE! The only thing I use it for is to see the streets coming up on the map, the navigation aspect of it has proved to be pretty much worthless to me. It has tried to send me on "three hour tours" (think Gilligan's Island) more times than I can count, and if I wouldn't have been using the GPS on my iPhone too, I would have gotten hopelessly lost. Also, "she" can't find what I'm looking for with the voice commands to save my soul. It drives DH to the edges of his sanity, yet he keeps trying to make it work. A friend of mine has the exact same car, and she has the exact same complaints about the GPS. All I can say is that I'm so happy we didn't pay extra for it!

Sure, but I've been doing those kind of road trips LONG before Garmin or navigation has been available and never had any trouble finding my way around, but I also don't live out in the sticks and pretty much know my area. I also agree with the others in that is just one more thing that could be a costly repair on a vehicle.
If I'm in an unfamiliar area, I use Google Maps on my phone.

No, it is not a requirement for me. I am not opposed to a vehicle that has it built in but I will not specifically seek one out.

Don't care about navigation (I use my iPhone) and hate the reverse cameras! I would never even use that option so no, not worth it to me.

You can still buy them, most people just don't like using them any more I have a family of hunters, fishermen/women and RVers, so we do have paper maps. But we also have a GPS in our RV, truck and SUV.

Certainly not me. I was speaking for myself alone. I can't remember the last time I have been in an area without data.
