i live in a fairly well populated area in central texas (belton) and we drove a few miles out of town yesterday and my data didn't work at all... some of you amaze me with your inability to see that not everyone's life and situations mirror your's in 4 countries this year...never been without data coverage. In DC today... Without data coverage. And lost as hell until I turned on the GPS.

I have one of those little GPS units you stick on your window. That's good enough for me. I can't rely on my phone for anything for numerous reasons and even if I could I doubt I would want to drain the battery down using it for navigation. Of my friends and family I know three people that have built in car navigation and none of them use the units because they don't work or aren't reliable. The last time I was in the car with a friend that has one it tried to take us on a route to a destination that was 6 hours out of the way!

every.single.topic you post on, you are contradictory, argumentative, omg its just soul sucking! whether its jobs, religion, politics, the fucking post office, ebola or for god's sake... gps!! isn't it exausting?? OMG I've been thinking the same thing lately! I never noticed it on the old board, but maybe I just wasn't paying attention. She reminds me of my ODD nephew who can argue anything from the color of the sky on down. We just got to the point with him where we tell him he's right chuckle about it amongst ourselves. Well you aren't reading all my posts at all then. But go on thinking you are so much better for posting shit like this. Go you! I find this much ruder than anything I have posted lately. My life is very different than others. Sorry that upsets you so much.

I passed when I bought my last car. It was $3K more and it made the screen a bit larger than the one already in the car I think it included something else as well but I don't remember what else. I figured I use my phone when I need help finding something and it wasn't worth it.

I'm looking at getting a used car. I had no interest in backup camera or nav, but it seems some of you really enjoy those features. Just for traffic purposes alone would you recommend the navigation?
I hardly ever look up directions to get anywhere, probably once or twice a year if that. (suppose it's a benefit of living in New England my whole life and states that border the ocean to the east, you can really only go north, west, or south)
What about the backup camera? Is it hard to get used to? I feel like I'd have a problem trusting it, knwim?

It's so weird and fish-eyed that you can't tell how close you are to something. We drove my sister's car while on vacation and her backup camera is awesome. It's a normal view and has a green, yellow and red zone to let you know how close you are to something. Not something you want to rely on but it's a lot more helpful than the one we have. Tonight I was backing out of a parking space and saw someone in the camera but very tiny. When I looked behind me they were right there next to my car. I always turn around and look with my eyes before backing out but still-I hate that it's so UNhelpful.

Gosh, I am a total dinosaur then! I don't have a navigation system, nor do I plan on getting one. It would not a requirement for me in a new car, especially if I had to pay extra for it. I still use a good old fashioned street directory! and if I'm going somewhere new, I go to Google Maps and write down the directions on a sticky note. Having said that, I think that it's one of those things that you don't miss until you've had it. I always said I didn't need electric windows..... until I got a car with electric windows. Now I couldn't live without them.

I use my phone, but would prefer to have had nav built into my car. I like being able to see the screen and roads up ahead.

I always turn around and look with my eyes before backing out but still-I hate that it's so UNhelpful. I don't exclusively use my backup camera for backing up. It's a combination of turning my head, listening to the warning beeps, and looking in the camera to see what's back there. I also use it when I pull in forward to park to make sure I am all the way in my space or garage. I really wish I had a front camera too but that will have to be the next car. But I could live without the camera more than I could live without the warning beeps. I will NEVER get another car that doesn't have backup (and front) warning beeps...it's saved my ass more than once. As for the navigation, the real time traffic info and being able to search for a destination whose address I have no idea of, are extremely valuable features to me. But they do come with an extra monthly fee for being connected to the internet at all times. But it's worth it to me to be able to verbally ask my car to find (for example) Home Depot in Anytown, USA, and it will find it for me and guide me there without ever having to push a button.

My Prius has the backup camera but I don't really trust it. I still turn and look. It shows directly behind but not if something is coming. I have the navigation thing too, which I really like. It doesn't have a subscription payment though. I guess it is hooked to internet somehow for free?

My backup camera doesn't have warning beeps. I think they are standard on all Toyota minivans so maybe the lower end models (ours is the 2nd from the lowest I think) have the sub-par cameras...

How do warning beeps work? I thought they alerted people behind the car when you reverse. Or do they beep if you are near an object?

On my sister's car, a it beeps if something is in the 'red zone' (which is closest to the car).

No; because my portable GPS can travel with me to any rental car I use. I would not pay extra for in car navigation. Exactly that. We've rented cars on vacation several times over the last few years (multiple countries) and being able to take our own GPS with us - pre-programmed with relevant addresses - is so useful.

I bought a car in August and didn't upgrade to the Navigation system. I am fine with that decision. When I need to, I use my phone or print out directions onto a piece of paper (how very old school)

The warning beeps come from a separate system from the backup camera. They are from the backup sensors (those little circles that you see across bumpers).

I use my built in nav all the time! I much prefer it to my phone because it is bigger. I also have OnStar. They download it right to the same system. This is good because my car is 5 years old and I have not updated the map software. Through OnStar, I lnow I am getting good info.
I don't know that I would make a decision based on nav, but it's nice to have.
Good luck!

Deal breaker for me on last two cars. DD has my fold car and is life saver because she can't navigate with phone and drive legally.

I'm beginning the process of shopping for a new car right now.
I don't want/need navigation. I have a VERY good sense of direction, and when I need help (beyond looking at a map before leaving), I can use my phone.
I also don't need the back-up camera (in my little sports car). If I were buying a big SUV, I'd probably want it, but I don't. It's included in the *Limited* edition "trim package" that I will pay for ($3,400+) so I can have many options that I DO want.
However, to get the ONE thing I *HAVE* to have (a sunroof) the $2,400 package also includes navigation, upgraded stereo/sound, fancy temp control, clean air ionizer & auto defrost, and "proximity key"/push-button start. I rented a car with push-button start and I didn't like it. I was constantly freaking out that I didn't have my key....
Ah well.
Happy Birthday to me! <3

No, it doesn't matter to me.
We just bought a replacement "second" vehicle - a 2009 truck and it doesn't have navigation. We will just use our phones, like we currently do.
