I’m hoping someone may have a somewhat easy solution for me. I know I can’t be the only one with this problem. I am looking for a way to print my photos in 4x6 size without losing any of the image (it prints white bars on the top and/or bottom of vertical photos) I would prefer to be able to do this to a whole batch of photos and not each photo individually. I used Costco a lot in the past and the b**** that works the photo counter won’t do it for me anymore (even though the manager says it can be done the girl refuses to do it). I’ve also used Persnickety and their no crop option but haven’t been all that impressed. Plus I have to wait for the photos to arrive. Our local photo shop chain closed the location nearby. They were great but very pricey.
Ultimately I would love to be able to run into someplace like Walgreens or Meijer and use their kiosks but I need the images to already be 4x6 or it will crop the image..... ideas?

IMO the very easiest is to change your camera ratio so that the resulting images are the proper proportions. I believe it should be 2:3 but hopefully someone can verify. It would be in your camera settings. Doesn't help with old photos but would help with all new photos. If your photos are a different proportion from 4x6 (2:3) the only options are to have white space to make up for the difference or to crop out part of the photo.

Yes to this, if you're using a digital camera you might be able to change the ratio in the settings. If you're using a mobile device (iPhone, Android) I'm not sure you can do batch processing of photos unless you use an app.

An app or something is what I think I’m looking for. Either for Mac or iphone. I don’t mind the white space on the photos. My iphone doesn’t give any size options other than their stands 4x5 or square.

I use a free collage site called BeFunky that will let me set up to print any size image on any size paper. So if you have a narrow vertical shot of a standing person, you won't have to crop off their head or feet. Instead, you can add white space to the side of the image, and print it on whatever sized paper you choose. You'd have to edit them one by one however. I'm not aware that it's capable of batch editing. It handles the sizing by pixel ratios, so there's a little bit of math involved, but not that much. If you want to try it out, I'll be happy to walk you through it.

Lie others have said, you should double check the proportions your camera is taking photos in- sounds like the original photo itself is not true 4x6. I will edit my photos within the built in photo app on my phone/computer to change things to 4x6 if they are not like that already. You will have to chop off the image at the sides.

Looks like there are many options on an iphone (may depend on the age of the phone) www.online-tech-tips.com/smartphones/view-photos-widescreen-169-iphone/

Hope you get your photo issues resolved, but I just wonder why you need to call the woman at the Costco photo counter names?

I use the free Project Life app. I can just pick the template I want and drop my pictures into it. They all print perfectly on a 4 x 6 picture. I just have to cut them apart when I need them.
ETA: When I drop the photo in the template, I can enlarge the image if I want and still keep it in the 4 x 6 format.

Hope you get your photo issues resolved, but I just wonder why you need to call the woman at the Costco photo counter names? Probably because I’m still angry that I now have to find a new place to print photos because of her. The last few times I went to the photo center when she was working she had a major attitude problem and severe lack of basic customer service skills. I’m talking hands on the hip, quietly calling me names because the manager made her do her job. The guy that worked there before her would happily crop my photos all I had to do was tell him no crop. This new girl said she didn’t know how to do it so I canceled the photo order and no big deal, I went about my shopping. I noticed the photo manager was there on the way out and stopped to ask if the ‘no crop’ was no longer an option. She told me it absolutely was an option and quickly showed the girl how to do it for the batch which was like clicking three spots on the screen so not real involved. When I went to pick up the photos is when she was called me names and was complaining about the extra work she had to do. The next time I went to print photos refused to print my 300 photos even though I told her up front I didn’t need them the same day. She said it was too much work and asked me why I can’t be like normal people and print like 50 photos. I left without photos and haven’t been back since.

I would not be going elsewhere, especially for a service that they provide and an employee is refusing to do. I would be bringing it to the Managers attention, that there is a problem. Communication is everything. The "powers that be" have no idea that there is an issue, unless it's communicated to them. They cannot fix the problem, unless someone brings it to their attention. I would be speaking to the Photo Manager, Store Manager and Corporate. If the photo counter clerk, feels that doing her job is "too much work", the "powers that be" need to know what occurred, what was said and what her attitude was, that way they can educate her as to what tasks her job includes as well as educate and train her how to do her job properly. Or, they may opt to replace her with someone who can and will do the job proficiently and with a pleasant attitude.
