So annoyed right now...this is scrapping adjacent. Another craft (I feel like I'm cheating). There is a yarn that I'm DYING for that is out of stock everywhere. Amazon has it in packs of 3. I need 4. There is one place that has it in stock, but they want 11 fricking dollars for shipping. In the US. WHO CHARGES THAT MUCH FOR SHIPPING? There are places that I won't shop because their shipping is more than $5 (looking at you SSS).
I don't even know if it's priority. If I pay this money I'll be kicking and screaming (well aware of the fact that this is 1 2/3 lattes from Starbucks).
What's your limit? When do you bite the bullet? Is this a first world problem that has turned me in to a spoiled brat?

I'll pay for shipping if it is $10 or less for a good amount of stuff. I really want some things from Love from Lizzie, but the shipping is $26. Nope. Sometimes I go in on things with other scrappers, so shipping isn't a big deal at all.

I'm cheap. The most I've paid for shipping for crafty stuff is probably about $5 or so to Peachy Cheap. Most of my orders to ACOT are $3.99, or else I'll pad my order to qualify for free shipping.
I'd rather do without than pay a premium on the shipping, but in your case, with the yarn, I might just pay it. I'd be spitting nails, but I'd pay it.

I'm so cheap with shipping. It's just too bitter a pill to pay $$.

I would pay the ridiculous shipping if this was really the only option. Although, I don’t know how it can be that expensive to pack and ship yarn. Is 2 packs of 3 from Amazon more than $11? Can you use the extra yarn for something else?

For me I kind of consider what I am buying before I set a price that is more than I am wiling to pay. Like 12x12 paper or something heavy. I also consider where the place is located and kind of try to shop mostly at stores closer to my coast.
I would not want to pay $11 for 4 skeins of yarn either.

It depends on how much I want it. I recently ordered from Mama Elephant. I really only wanted specific things, and my order didn’t qualify for free shipping. I paid the $5 flat rate shipping, but only because I really wanted what I was ordering.
Usually I wait till I have enough in my order to get free shipping (Queen & Co., My Favorite Things, Lawn Fawn, etc.). I have gotten spoiled by Amazon Prime. I am so used to free shipping, that I have a hard time paying for shipping from elsewhere. I will sometimes keep browsing till I find enough to boost my order till it qualifies for the free shipping from the online craft stores.

I’m trying to be better about looking at the total cost instead of cost+shipping. Granted, I purchase a lot of stuff from places with free shipping, but if I’m placing an order from someplace that doesn’t have free shipping, I look at the total cost and ask myself if it’s worth it. For example, I order a lot of stuff from scrapbook.com which doesn’t usually have free shipping. However, they usually have what I want/need and I know I’ll get it within a few days, so the shipping cost is usually worth it to me. Now, $11 shipping on yarn—yikes. I’d weigh how much I want the yarn and how much the total cost is, but knowing myself, if I wanted it badly enough and I could afford it, I’d probably buy it even with a ridiculous shipping cost. Then, that place wouldn’t be my go-to when I needed yarn. I’d look elsewhere before purchasing again from them.

See.... $11 flat rate USD seems reasonable to me... as in, it's better than i could be charged to get to NZ! 🙃

I hear ya. I want to order fro Frank Garcia's Scrapbook store but refuse to because he wants to charge me $20+ for shipping for paper that cost less than $20. And yeah, he does has free shipping if you spend a boatload, but I only want a few acetate sheets, so I do without.

I hate paying for shipping, but if I want something badly enough I'll do it.
I just paid $10 shipping for a Christmas gift, but it was the only store that had my item in stock.

I try and maximize my shipping as much as I can, but if it's something I've been looking for for a long time and need, I usually just bite the bullet and pay the excessive shipping. I'd almost be okay with sellers charging a bit more for the product and charging less for shipping so it's a was for them, they'd make up the money in the product cost if that makes sense. When I'm selling my destash stuff I'll charge more for the stuff and offer either free or super reduced shipping.

The worst thing about this place is that they have some kind of 1996 shipping policy....the more you order the more the price increases. My original order was almost $20 in shipping. So I cut it down to just the yarn I really wanted.

scrappyesq, what yarn is it? I have a fairly big yarn stash and would be happy to check to see if I have the yarn.

I know that's a yarn that I don't have -- but I think I may be adding to my stash! -- but I did see where you can get single skeins on Amazon: Arrowwood

First off, shipping is outrageous! I do a lot of shipping for the company I work for. Shipping isn't always the weight of the package, but also the dimensions of the package. And it also depends on the volume you ship. The more that is shipped, the better deal you get from the shipping companies.

Probably a moot point now, but I wonder if they have their shipping calculator set up so that each item is listed at the weight including packaging, so as you add more it's adding the weight of the packaging multiple times. That's how my card shop worked when I used to charge customers for shipping. I would input that a card plus packaging was 3oz, but that doesn't mean 3 cards weighs 9oz. It's more like 5oz. Now I offer "free shipping" and just absorb those costs into my shop overhead and make less profit or charge more for each card I sell. I would be inclined to contact the shop owner in that case (assuming it's a small shop) and ask if they can check the true cost of shipping and refund the difference to keep the sale. Especially if you can go in armed with the info of how much a certain number of ounces should cost to ship (usps has an online calculator which is very useful if you know weight and dimensions). Anyway, sounds like amazon and baylorgrad came through for you.

See.... $11 flat rate USD seems reasonable to me... as in, it's better than i could be charged to get to NZ! 🙃 I just paid $15 for shipping in Australia from NSW to QLD which I did have a bit of an internal rant about but I really wanted a pack of embellishments that no one else in the country seems to have so I just added a few more things in my cart and sucked it up. I have often paid more for shipping from the US to Australia than the total of the items purchased. I would love to buy from a lot of the warehouse box sales but in the last few years that has become completely cost prohibitive so I have not bought one of those in ages.

Keep in mind that not only does weight affect shipping costs, so does the size of the box needed to ship items. Also- all the carriers recently added "holiday" surcharges.

I would like to add onto basketdiva's point about the holiday surcharges to gently remind that we're still in the middle of a pandemic, which has also affected pricing! But I get your frustrations.

I totally understand Covid related issues. This isn't one of them since their shipping prices have always been the same, as in pre-pandemic. Since I couldn't find the yarn anywhere else initially i was going to order anyway. Sticker shock prompted me to post and see if anyone else had the same issue with pricing.
