My college-age daughter wants a new pair of rain boots for Christmas. I need recommendations. What's a quality brand that's reasonably priced? I'd welcome any specific recommendations. I personally don't have rain boots and don't know where to start.
I do have a gift card for Nordstrom, though! TIA.

What would you consider reasonably-priced? I would assume most college-age kids would want a pair of Hunters. They run a little over $100, but you can watch for sales. Also, Sperry duck boots are popular and they are cheaper.

I tried the cute inexpensive patterned rain boots that became popular a few years ago, but I found I wanted boots that actually kept my feet dry, and the two or so pair I bought didn't. So I waited for Hunters I liked to go on sale and bought those. I wear them with two pair of wool socks to combat ankle chafing and they keep my feet wonderfully dry. I think a lot of girls in my area also wear LL Bean boots in the rain and snow.

I've been looking at the Hunter boots. They're expensive but I have a gift card to bring the cost down a bit, and if they'll last, it'll be worth it.
Their colors are boring though, and the only pattern I see on Nordstrom is cheetah, and my dd would hate that.
I should get them for myself!

Sometimes Costco carries the Hunter boots.

This reminds me of the "red sweater" story. I wanted a "red sweater" -- a cotton, no pattern, deep red sweater (I cannot currently remember the name -- raime??). That is what I asked for from my Mother when she inquired - I described exactly what I wanted. I received a red orange, acrylic, cable knit sweater -- "It is a red sweater" my Mother explained. ........... sigh ........... that has been over 25 years, she is gone and I still remember it as a shining example of the difficulties between me and my Mother.
ASK your daughter specifically what she wants -- she undoubtedly has something in mind.

Guess what she got the following year for Christmas; black Hunter boots.

Hunters are classic, but I see a lot of young girls wearing duck boots, too.
I bought a really cute pair of Lemon rain boots on sale at Modcloth last year.

I love my sloggers. Not only are they rain boots, but I use them gardening and in snow, they have great treads and my feet stay really warm in them.
I have Uggs, love them but not as versatile as my Sloggers.
I also have a few pairs of Merrell boots, they are functional, waterproof and warm but not as much lived as my Sloggers, lol.

I would ask her what color hunter boots she wants. Or maybe she wants something else.

I, too, have Hunter boots. I've had mine for years and they have held up; my oldest (college) has a pair too. THE ONE THING that is negative is that they do not keep your feet warm. That is fine if you're in moderate temperatures, but if it's really cold and wet out where she is, I would recommend getting some knee-high fleece socks to go under (at this point in soccer season, if I'm outside for a while, I need them). Hunter has some that are made for their boots and spendy, but I've seen much cheaper knock-offs.

Nordstrom may not carry the whole line, but they do come in a lot of colors -- I have a pair of boring olive ones, but also a pair of Tiffany-bluish-aqua ones I got at a steep discount a few years ago, and they have colors like red and pink.

Thanks, everyone! I am going to just ask her what she has in mind. She's picky, and if I try to do something other than black boots it could spell trouble. She's open to a pattern but I could really mess up on that one.
The Hunters are classic but no cute prints. The Sloggers are cute (and cheap). I have my eye on a couple of pair that she might like, though I'm not sure how she'll feel about the overall style. I may end up buying myself a pair of those, to tell the truth.
I am going to take a look at LL Bean and Modcloth.

I have a pair of very tall rain boots (MK) that I found at a discount store. I also have duck boots that I use for snowy days. I like how easy the duck boots are to put on.

Check Nordstrom Rack too, they have hunter and other cute brands. Check the reviews as well, I got a great pair from there and thankfully I read the reviews and ordered a bigger size, otherwise they would have been too short.. The ones I got also run narrow which was an asset to me, most boots are too wide in the foot and the last pair I had my foot would try to escape which made them super annoying to wear.

I have a pair of Union Jack Hunters and get a lot of comments when wearing them. Had to buy a boot remover to get them off though!

If she likes prints, take a look at Bogs boots. I have a floral paisley pair that I love. They also have insulated ones. They are expensive, but not quite as expensive as Hunters.
Not only do you need to know the color (shiny or matte), but also the height. Ankle, calf, or knee length. If she’s short, the knee length probably won’t work well for her because they went over the knee for me and make it very awkward to walk.

Well, I know this doesn't help you use the GC but I do a lot of my shoe shopping here. They have many styles and colors of Hunter boots here (some half off). I have a bright pink pair I love. I have to wear the shorter style because the tall ones would go over my knees. I am short. www.6pm.com/hunter-boots

I'm glad you're asking her, because if she's like my daughter, she'd refuse to wear the Hunter boots. Or carry the Hydroflask that people were suggesting for another teen a few days ago. I have a pair of Hunter boots and she won't even borrow them. She just NOPEs most every popular brand of anything. I read suggestions threads like this to know what NOT to get her!

yes, I agree to ask her what type she'd like, and also whether she wants tall. mid-length, or ankle-boots. I actually have 1 pair of tall rain boots with a lining and a second pair that is ankle-length with no lining. They both have their uses! FWIW, 26-YO DD gave me such a hard time when I bought the ankle-length rain boots, but then I wore them like 4x in the first week alone the spring that I got them. She only has the mid-calf length but hardly every wears them. To each their own. My ankle-boots are Joules Wellibob Chelsea boots from Zappos, very similar to these, but mine have multi-colored polka-dots. The Joules are comfy and come in lots of fun patterns & colors as well as different lengths (mid-calf, tall, ankle, & even some that are like the duck shoes). ETA that my Joules are also nice and watertight.

A lot of the nurses here in Houston but rain boots from Tractor Supply. I have a pair of dragonfly print. I paid 14.99 and have used them every time it rains and floods. At least 20 times a year and they hold up. Looks like Hunters, I guess, good rubber boots, no leaks!

I know the tall rubber boots are all in fashion, but they are horrible for walking. Most don't flex well at the ankle, and they aren't insulated. Ankle high waterproof boot would be better for tromping around a college campus.

I also have a pair of Tiffany Blue Hunter Boots - I bought them when Hunter had an insane sale on them. I agree with asking her exactly what she wants. What seem like boring colors to us may be exactly what she wants. Never underestimate the attraction of plain black boots. I would caution away from the shiny patent ones because the shiny finish scuffs/scratches and then never looks the same.
