Should I take Shimelle's JYC class?
I have done some form of December Daily for 5 years in a row and it is one of my favourite projects. My kids love looking at the little albums especially. I haven't ordered anything from Ali this year or last year...I feel like I need to try something to refresh my outlook. Would Shimelle's class help with that?
I have taken lots of classes from Shimelle and I do think she is a get teacher.

Do you like to write? I've heard lovely things about JYC and the way she approaches the prompts.

I really like her approach to documenting Dec, especially because there are days when she will stick a photo and a couple of 3x4 cards in pockets and call the page done. I've had years where I've used her prompts more frequently and I find them particularly helpful on days when I might not otherwise have much to document. I really love the access to all past and future years, it is by far the best value class I've taken. She uses the same prompts for several years (this will be my 10th year and there have only been two, or possibly three sets of prompts in that time) but I like seeing how she uses those same prompts over time.
Watching her near daily videos is one of the things I do for myself during the crazy season. They're often short, usually under 10 mins but can be as short as 3 or 4 mins so easy to fit in between everything else.
If you enjoy other classes you've taken from her I don't think you'll regret this purchase.

I will be busy for some parts of December due to nursing school, so I wanted something that helped me get ideas and was maybe somewhat laid back. This sounds good!

I signed up for the first time last year after the Peas recommendations and it was worth the $35. That you get to repeat the class every year for free makes it a wonderful value. The prompts are flexible, so you can use them on pretty much any day. I wanted to do it last year because I was in a bit of a funk and needed something with a little more structure to help me do the project as well as enjoy the season. It helped with all of that.
Shimelle's enthusiasm for scrapbooking is always fun for me to watch and it was a really nice daily joy last year durning Christmas. You can access the any time, so if school gets busy, you'll have the option go to back later and catch up on what you missed. You also get to see previous year's in the archives as well.

I did this class a couple of times years ago and it was a wonderful experience. I like the guided journaling prompts/photo ideas as opposed to Ali's DD where I am more on my own to determine and capture my story. Both approaches have value though.
That being said, how do I get my access back? This might be something fun to do while I'm home this year but I haven't seen the emails in at least a couple of years.

Would this be a good class for a newbie without kids? I really want to make a DD, but I don't even know where to start

Would this be a good class for a newbie without kids? I really want to make a DD, but I don't even know where to start Yes! I don’t have kids and still get a lot out of it, and Shimelle started this project years before she had her son. Some participants use the prompts to tell older Christmas stories rather than current ones so if you feel a prompt is especially child focused you could return to your own childhood. That said the prompts are really broad and can be interpreted in lots of different ways.

There will be new prompts this year! It sounds like there will be some focus on finding the good in a different/difficult year, maybe noting more of the things that are different or special this year? But not in a bummer way. This project is all about finding the joy in Christmas even when you've lost it. That's how it started originally, as a way for Shimelle to reclaim the holiday.
And there's also a new class in addition to JYC called Share Your Christmas that's for people not planning to make a scrapbook, but who want to take better photos, take videos, share on social media, and generally enjoy Christmas without the crafty stuff. It's called Share Your Christmas. I posted a little bit more about it in the DD Megaa thread. It's an extra cost for people signed up for JYC, but included in the "annual pass" she sold a while back.
Both classes are forever access, and that alone makes them worth the price IMO. Shimelle is a very good teacher and her classes are usually great value for money.
If you would like to get a look at some JYC prompts to get a sense of whether it's a good fit I have some old ones archived that I can share. I'm happy to send the link to anyone interested in buying. The almost-daily videos are a favorite part of my holiday season even if my journal is just a document, or in a notebook. And there's a message board community for sharing and chatting although I prefer ours.

There are people making albums from all walks and stages of life, and even for people with bigger families it's likely that many people won't be able to see them this year. Shimelle's album reflects the stuff she does with her son, but the prompts themselves are very open as Chinagirl828 said.

I considered not even doing a December album/project this year because of Covid, because of school, because of the time it takes...but it has become a part of my traditions and I think this year more than ever we need those traditions. I love the idea of taking back that joy.

I just want to put my two cents in. This will be my sixth year taking the class. It is truly what helped me enjoy Christmas more. I told Shimelle the other day I was excited to start considering I don’t like Christmas and I don’t like journaling so I’m only good with the word “your”. Christmas is my least favorite holiday, but having a kid made me want to rekindle that Christmas magic. I will say that it worked. I believe I came in on the first year of her second set of prompts. I love the daily videos, the supportive scrappers, and the no pressure prompts. Some prompts I follow closely and others I skip. There’s always variety when it comes to albums. This year is my first not doing a 6x8 but creating a memory book instead. I’m looking forward to the challenge.
Tl;dr
It’s been a fun class and worth every last penny.

I've been doing JYC for 8 years now and it makes me look at Christmas differently. I step back and look at Christmas more objectively, truly deciding what is meaningful to me/us, and where our energies and limited time should be focussed. There's a prompt that gives you "permission" to let go of some chores that are still on your to-do list - so helpful when you feel like you are failing Christmas. I'd say Shimelle encourages a "good enough" attitude towards Christmas and lives that too, she is so very human in admitting where she is behind or letting things slide.
So I get a journal and some life coaching. Quick Shimelle videos. With forever access. Love it.
I DON'T work on my DD in December. That would be too much. But the journal is there for when I do want to get my DD done.

Anyone even remotely considering JYC should ABSOLUTELY sign up! It’s a great class, plus you get access to all the previous years’ prompts and free access from here forward. There’s no pressure to do all the prompts, and she often provides photo prompts/tips and other things besides just the journal prompts. Shimelle is awesome, and this is my favorite class. DO IT!!!!

I'm strongly considering signing up for her new class, because I definitely document stuff online.

Yes, do it! I'm strongly considering signing up for her new class, because I definitely document stuff online. I am too. Lately I’m more likely not to do a full scrappy album for Christmas, although I enjoy watching her make hers. but I could definitely use advice on styling pictures to look better and getting nicer people pictures inside. I might not do the video stuff, but I think it will still be worthwhile, and I am always tempted to take Shimelle classes even for things I don’t do (like 12x12 scrapping). I just enjoy her. The class can be my early Xmas present to myself.

I signed up for the new class too, even though I'm a diehard JYC'er - have been there from the very first one!! I second every word above - if in doubt, go for it. I feel sure you won't regret it. I love the way Shimelle thinks...works...nudges me to think in a different way. I appreciate the fact that she's there when I want her to be but leaves me alone when I'm doing ok by myself. I really love that the class is not product driven - I can use what I have or I can splurge on something new and exciting and either way will work with what she suggests for that day. Yes, it's still about playing with pretty paper and sparkly things, but it's so much more than that IMHO. The forever access is incredible.

I think the fact she encourages you to use what you have is amazing. She’s put up a list of supplies she’s using at scrapbook.com. However, she says up front you don’t/shouldn’t feel like you need it all. Substitute with your own supplies or do something completely different. All this talk has me wanting to start my album today!

In case you (or a lurker) need just a tiny extra push: yes, you absolutely should. You pay once for lifetime access to somebody helping you to scrap daily through the month, giving you prompts, encouraging you and just being a darn good teacher. Shimelle's aesthetic isn't even close to mine but she hits the sweet spot: she knows when to push through, when to step back and just be happy with less and call it a day, she's inspiring with her approach to prompts, she's fun and uplifting, she's a great scrap technician who is so good at positioning design elements. Very highly recommended!
