Thank you! That makes sense! Going to be a citizen by next election so have been trying hard to learn and understand elections. Since you are trying to learn to be a citizen (Congratulations, are you sure you want to join this circus), I just wanted to expand a little. Georgia's rules are different than the rest of the states. The 50% rule is not a standard part of the American election landscape. The South adopted it as part of the slate of "Jim Crow" laws. This one to prevent black people from winning elections. The other southern states have slowly eliminated this type of law. Georgia and Louisiana are the only states that still have this standard, I think. If this was any other state, the Perdue / Ossoff Senate race would have been decided on Tuesday with Perdue being declared the winner. In the other race, it's a Special Election, so it's rules are a little different. I didn't know, when I was responding to Elaine last night, but apparently in the Warnock / Loeffler / +19 other people race, that was technically the Primary. For the purpose of Special Elections, not a normal one, there are 7 states that have the "get 50% you win, otherwise the Top 2 compete head-to-head in a runoff. Or to put it another way, Ossoff / Purdue are going into a "third round of elections. A. Primary in June B. Regular Election C. January Runoff. This is weird. Most states only have A & B, and whoever wins, wins. Warnock / Loeffler have a more standard "two rounds." A. Tuesday, which functioned as a Primary. B. January Runoff. Switching gears. I was still asleep when the BIG CALL came in. I'm feeling a little disappointed, because DH described it as basically the WHOLE WORLD called it at once. And I missed out on that cathartic moment. However, the big moment is definitely still noon, January 20th. And I will be awake for it! Thank you! I have lived here 24 years, love this country!

Pretty please and thank you! I think it just means a decisive enough victory that you feel permission to enact your policies, your vision. George W Bush felt a mandate after his second election and famously said something about earning political capital and intending to spend it. Understandably, he didn’t feel that way throughout his first term, which hinged on a SC interpretation of vote-counting. My feeling is a mandate involves winning both the popular vote and the electoral college, a feat we’re watching unfold - and a feat Donald Trump had to try to claim four years ago by insisting, with no proof, that two million non-citizens voted for his opponent.

The kids on my block are outside banging on pots and pans. That’s what finally did if for me tears-wise. I’m happy for them. I’m happy for my twentysomething kids who have to resist the fatalism within their generation every single day. What part of the country are you in, if you don't mind my asking?

I’m in San Diego, CA we live near Balboa Park and the entire neighborhood is erupting with honking and screaming. Such a nice sound compared to the weekly Trump parades that would roll through every Sunday for the last month.

Pretty please and thank you! It is a fiction the GOP has created to influence citizens on who gets to govern. When Democrats win, they require a mandate. A victory, so large and decisive that the country believes they have earned the right to govern with the principles of their party's platform. When the GOP wins, "Elections have consequences," no mandate is required. Simply winning is proof that you've earned the right to govern. See also: Democrats have to compromise "for the good of the country." And "it's an election year, so we need to wait to confirm a SC Justice." vs "we're the party in charge, we don't."

I couldn't love this any more. The dems always have to be the grown-ups, the fair, the reasoned, the mending, the compromising. The GOP gets to pull whatever shit they can get away with in naked power grabs and shoving policy up America's behind. I hope the Dems have learned that the answer is to be fair AND be strong, be resolute, BUT MAKE CHANGE and not KOWTOW to those who WILL NOT BE MOLLIFED and will not reciprocate when the tides turn.

Thank you all so much for this thread. It's been an incredible source this week.
I'm in a "split household" as someone put it earlier so it's been (and will continue to be) stressful and even heartbreaking at times.
Going to celebrate now by taking a long walk with my daughter on this glorious, glorious day.

I’ve never seen a Trump sign displayed - either election.

Our small town(like MANY small towns) were huge Trump supporters so the are large obnoxious signs everywhere. I noticed yesterday that a neighbor just down the road(don't know them) had a Trump sign in their yard. When I went by yesterday, it was gone. I just smiled as I drove by.

What’s next?
I am glad Biden won. I am glad to have first female VP. But this is not over. They now have the shot Trump left to clean up. Including a Covid infested White House...
Celebrate today but get back to work tomorrow. Don’t take any of this for granted. We need to still mobilize people to vote. We have to work to get a senate majority.

There is no doubt that the black community and black women in particular are the reason Biden is president. I hope we ( as white women) continue to remember this and support them in taking positions of power. I hope we remember to listen to them and learn from them. I hope we can follow their lead and support them instead of expecting their support.

Thanks. I have had it up to here with concerned citizens, too, BTW. Already, people are scared of how the right will react, so the Dems shouldn't do anything controversial (hint: anything is controversial). I said, during primary season. If the GOP is going to make any Democrat into a bogeyman, and you have faith that your policies really will make things better for Americans, than be one. Demystify what being an actual Democrat or Progressive looks like, otherwise the bogeyman will continue to scare people in perpetuity to the right.
