So out of curiosity, what do you like? What would you prefer to serve that day that would make you excited? I wouldn’t actually want to make anything else than the traditional meal. It’s the one meal of the year that my husband absolutely loves and plans, weighing this side over that side or questioning if it’s REALLY wise to have 5 different carbs in one sitting. And really, it’s not that I HATE the food (you could look at me and know that’s true), I just don’t really get the anticipation. I’d just as soon have a steak. I DO always look FORWARD to Thanksgiving because of family. Usually my SIL and niece come and we spent the whole 4 days in our jams watching movies and playing games. But this year we all decided they shouldn’t come. Because of work and school they are really unable to isolate and the Midwest virus counts are through the roof. We decided not to risk it. We’re I to take away the actual foods, I might find my DH threatening to jump off the roof.

I'm not a fan of turkey but everyone loves the "traditional" side dishes. So there it is -- ham with traditional side dishes and desserts! Buy the ham and everything else is pretty easy.

Over the years I've adapted the traditional sides to ones that work better for our tastes.
I don't make green bean casserole - I make oldfashioned green beans with fresh beans, bacon, and brown sugar
I don't make mac and cheese or baked beans at all
I often make roast potatoes instead of mashed
I make a sweet potato casserole from actual sweet potatoes and NO marshmallows

A traditional Thanksgiving meal is one of my favorite things in the world, but my husband would agree with you. He wants to just do Greek chicken on the grill with some assorted sides. I do love Greek chicken, but I think I'd miss turkey and the trimmings. We'll see.

Have you ever had it made from scratch? Fresh green beans, fresh mushrooms (which I don't even like!) and a scratch made cheese sauce? I even make my own fried onions. Here's the recipe I use: www.daringgourmet.com/ultimate-green-bean-casserole/I'll just have to omit the bacon this year. Actually I have one time. I forgot about that. That is not bad at all, but most do the typical smooshie beans, and a can of soup. ha!
Thanks for sharing the recipe.
Yeah, I grew up with steamed fresh veggies, nothing from a can, everything scratch, etc. My ex husband's mother would cook everything to death (meat, veggies, everything) and used "cream of" soups all the time. Blech!

I don't care about the turkey or pumpkin pie, but I'm not going to lie, as a person who generally maintains a pretty healthy diet, I really do enjoy a nice big plate of stuffing, scalloped potatoes (what we make instead of mashed potatoes), sweet potato casserole, and gravy .

Me, it’s always been my least favorite meal of the year! I usually don’t eat much on Thanksgiving, not even dessert because I despise pumpkin pie and that’s usually the only dessert my family has. I’ve always wanted to do an Asian feast for Thanksgiving but I’ve never been able to get my family on board with the idea.

My plate on Thanksgiving is covered in mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn, cranberry relish, and croissant rolls. Every bit of carbohydrate I can pile on. And I could not care less that there isn't a real vegetable in sight. greendragonlady , have you tried Onion Gravy? Onion gravy looks really good! I’m typically not a big fan of gravy so I like the idea of one without meat drippings.

We don't!! For the past couple of years we've had steak that DH cooks to perfection on the barbecue.

I LOVE traditional Thanksgiving meal...so long as it's cooked by either one of my parents or myself...NOT my MIL! Since we are not going back to see family this year I'm all about the meal--in fact I wanted to make the decision on traveling early enough so I could prepare to make the meal. I did buy a smaller turkey than we usually make (DH gets a 20lb turkey as a Cmas bonus every year) so I have a feeling there will be a knock-down, drag out fight between DH, DS15 & myself for the stuffing that gets cooked inside of the turkey. I don't hate turkey, but I see it more as a stuffing baking dish than anything!

We have already decided to do a non-traditional thanksgiving dinner this and it’s seems we are all a little more excited to be planning that! COVID has changed everything, so why not what we are having for the meal? We are still deciding between lasagna, fajitas, or grilled steak and pork chops plus the fixings. We can do the turkey at Christmas and ham at New Years. No need to stress-small group, do some fun games, etc.

I love turkey but I could do without most of the other trappings. My Thanksgiving meal really only consists of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy. The other traditional sides I don't find appealing. THIS!! I cannot stand squash or that horrid green bean casserole....or cranberries. Give me turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy along with a big lettuce salad and I would be HAPPY

I normally love the Thanksgiving meal. But I'm meat-free at the moment. No turkey or gravy for me. I LOVE gravy...I usually pour it over almost everything on the plate. I'll have to just have the potatoes, stuffing (cooked outside of the bird), and green bean casserole (all scratch-made, no condensed canned soup) You can make vegan/meat free gravy. If you eat butter, make it with butter, milk, and vegetable broth. If you are vegan, use a vegan butter, a dairy-free milk (I prefer oat milk with some Califia almond creamer added) and vegetable broth. Thanksgiving is just an excuse for me to eat stuffing and pumpkin pie. It's so much work because I make almost everything from scratch because of my dairy allergy, but oh so good! I only eat the turkey for the protein to offset all the carbs. And I only make turkey because DH loves the drumsticks. So that's our plan.

I just found a turkey rub and cranberry BBQ sauce I want to try this year. I told my family they are helping. DH has to plan and fix an appetizer lunch, snacky things to get us to supper. DS had to plan and make dessert. He likes baking so I am giving him what he likes. I will prepare the main meal. I don’t know if they like this idea, but I do. It is most likely just the three of us so I am making a change.
