My DH has been salivating for weeks over the Thanksgiving meal. We’ll be having my MIL over (she’s in our bubble) and they’ve been weighing what sides and desserts to have since it’s just us three. But honestly, I could not care less about it. Really, none of the foods on the side dish thread are anything I would give a moments thought to on any given day. And I’d much prefer a roast chicken to turkey.
Does anyone else just not care about Thanksgiving foods? My husband thinks I’m an alien.

I'm excited for it only because I'll see my kids. They have both been exposed and tested recently (as well as my husband), so I haven't seen them for a while.

I love turkey but I could do without most of the other trappings. My Thanksgiving meal really only consists of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy. The other traditional sides I don't find appealing.

We like Thanksgiving here and have several dishes that we make special for the holiday.

I must be an alien too! LOL! I am not a big fan of traditional Thanksgiving food. Growing up, our Thanksgiving had a lot of non-traditional foods along side the traditional, so that is what I usually ate. Thanksgiving to me was more about seeing my cousins than it was about the food. We could have had pizza and I would have been fine. Even today.

I can feel you. I’m excited because my kids are total foodies and it is their favorite meal of the year practically. I do like the food - but it’s not my favorite type of food (I’d be more excited about an amazing sushi meal...or a Greek spread etc) and I can’t go crazy eating without putting on weight so there’s that too....

I normally love the Thanksgiving meal. But I'm meat-free at the moment. No turkey or gravy for me. I LOVE gravy...I usually pour it over almost everything on the plate. I'll have to just have the potatoes, stuffing (cooked outside of the bird), and green bean casserole (all scratch-made, no condensed canned soup)

I'm not a real fan of the traditional Thanksgiving dishes. I can't understand how anyone can eat green bean casserole. Sorry if that is a favorite of yours, uh, not for me. No one knows how to make stuffing but my grandma that has been long gone. My mom swears she makes it like hers but there is no way. My mom's is pretty unappetizing. Yams out of a can is another no for me. They are so smooshie that they are almost slimy. Give me some seafood, traditional Mexican or Chinese and I won't have anything to complain about. lol

I love it but not all the work that goes into it for a meal and company that only visit for about two hours. I will make it for just the three of us but less sides. I’ve been craving stuffing and sweet potatoes.

Fresh green beans, fresh mushrooms (which I don't even like!) and a scratch made cheese sauce? I even make my own fried onions. Here's the recipe I use: www.daringgourmet.com/ultimate-green-bean-casserole/I'll just have to omit the bacon this year.

Since I am allergic to turkey, I love the sides - glazed carrots, candied yams, mashed potatoes, sauteed green beans, homemade cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie.

That is not bad at all, but most do the typical smooshie beans, and a can of soup. ha!
Thanks for sharing the recipe.

So out of curiosity, what do you like? What would you prefer to serve that day that would make you excited?
A lot of thanksgiving dishes are pretty simple and would be easy enough to eat anytime, but most of us only have them that day so we look forward to it. Plus, since it’s only one time a year we get to have them all on one day. I would never make that many dishes for a regular Sunday night dinner.

Me!
I used to like it, sort of. But years and years of cooking with guests' preferences in mind, years & years of cleaning house top to bottom, years & years of washing pots & pans & dishes... Sucked the joy out of it for me.
Now we do laid back Thanksgiving. We still make turkey (i don't even like turkey!), but we eat stuff that isn't traditional Thanksgiving food too.

It's just me, dd, and dh this year because of covid, so dd and I basically staged a coup and told dh that we're not having turkey. I know dh likes it so I'll stick with the bird theme but I'm going to make Cornish game hens. I've always wanted to make them so this is my chance. Costco sells a 4-pack so we'll each get our own (my dad used to do that...as kids we loved having our very own little bird on our plate, lol). Dd tried to tell me the 4th one could be for our dog, lol. Nope, although of course she'll get some of the meat. As for sides, I don't really like any of them. If dh feels that he can't get on without stuffing I'll make some (and dd and I will eat it...I mean, we don't hate it like we hate turkey, it's just not something I wait all year for). I'll make him his favorite green beans (not green bean casserole). Dd wants to make a baked brie which none of us have ever made before. Dessert will be cherry pie and apple pie because we have two schools of thought here about pie and "never the twain shall meet" as they say.

Growing up, our Thanksgiving had a lot of non-traditional foods along side the traditional, so that is what I usually ate. Thanksgiving to me was more about seeing my cousins than it was about the food. We could have had pizza and I would have been fine. Even today. hahahaha at the pizza! I hate to cook and I'm not a fan of Thanksgiving foods, so every year I'd say "one year for Thanksgiving we're having pizza!" Everyone would laugh, as would I, and the next year we'd have turkey and all the other traditional stuff. Well... then one year -- ds had moved to Georgia which was too far to drive for a 4-day weekend, dd was in college and decided to stay in her apartment since she'd be home in less than two weeks for winter break, and my sister-in-law's husband had died a few months earlier. SIL loves Thanksgiving and this was going to be her first one alone since her dh had died, so she asked me if I'd mind if my dh went up there (upstate NY) to have the holiday with her. She must have asked me ten times because she didn't seem to believe me when I said I did NOT mind. lolol.. I had a LOVELY Thanksgiving! I had pizza!! I brought the pizza and a beer into the living room, turned on a movie, and put my feet up. aaahhh.... I was such a nice Thanksgiving. I'm a total introvert so I just loved being alone. The funny thing was that a friend of mine who lives up in the next block and who is a TOTAL 100% extrovert just could not accept the fact that I was happy with my pizza and aloneness. She first invited me for dinner and after I turned that down she said "well you must come up for dessert!" lol. So I did, since I do like dessert. I walked up there, had some pie and wine, chatted for a bit, then walked home. She was happy, thinking she'd saved me from my solitude.

Eh I can take or leave it. BUT what I can't get enough of is the Thanksgiving wrap a local restaurant is doing. I'll be sad when Thanksgiving is over because of that

I would rather have my Dad's brisket than turkey. And my family always prefers the turkey pot pie I make the next day with the leftovers. LOL! And this year will be different for me as I have been doing IF since June 30th so I eat very differently now.

I hate turkey. Blech. It will be especially bad this year, because I had a bad experience with ground turkey in the spring. But, I do love the sides. We don’t do green bean casserole, we just do green beans sautéed with onions and bacon. We do homemade cranberry sauce with orange and pecans, and I do a really good stuffing. And I could eat mashed potatoes pretty much any day of the year. So, yeah, I’m good with the sides…

I love it all, but would love it more if somebody else was cooking it.
We are having our Thanksgiving meal on Friday, as Ds’ Gf is expected at her family on the actual holiday, they will not deviate. I don’t care, Thurs. or Fri. is fine with us and it makes it less stressful for her if we graciously host them Fri. (we really like her). And it will just be the four of us. But this year, Fri. Is my birthday, I’d rather have pizza or Chinese food, but will go with the flow. I’m trying hard to knock off my COVID 19, so turkey and some fresh veg will be better for me anyway. Dh loves Thanksgiving dinner, and I do cook it a few times a year for most holiday meals. We’ll have it again for Christmas.

I like the sides, but not the Turkey. It is usually just 6 of us, I usually order some main dish to replace the Turkey and make the sides myself.

Nope, I love most of it. I'm not a big fan of turkey but I like a little bit of it. I hate Green Bean Casserole but my family loves it. But sometimes I just make some fresh sauteed green beans for me. I love mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing and pumpkin pie. Yum! And mac and cheese which we now have also.

Like it. Would not go out of my way for things like turkey, sweet potato souffle, green bean casserole, sweet corn pudding, corn bread stuffing or cranberry sauce, but combined they are magical.

I like most of it, especially a good roast turkey the way DH makes it. But it is a lot of work to make all that other stuff and then have to clean up the huge kitchen mess for only three people. I would be totally happy with just the turkey, some homemade gravy and mashed potatoes and my homemade bread. Now that I have a bigger KitchenAid it’s even less work because it makes less of a mess mixing up the dough than my smaller one did.
But of course to appease my DH, we will also have homemade pumpkin pie, green bean casserole, probably some kind of sweet potatoes and homemade dressing/stuffing.

My plate on Thanksgiving is covered in mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn, cranberry relish, and croissant rolls. Every bit of carbohydrate I can pile on. And I could not care less that there isn't a real vegetable in sight. greendragonlady , have you tried Onion Gravy?

DH and I have always gone out to a buffet for thanksgiving. This year in order to fit in all the things we like, I decided to actually make 2 seperate "thanksgiving" dinners on different days, maybe a week apart. One day we will have ham and the sides that go best with that and the other day we will have turkey and the sides that go best with that. I got a free frozen turkey breast at Wal-Mart with the Ibotta app but I still need to get the ham and decide which sides will be scratch made and which will be quick fixes. And of course each day will need pie. Yay, an excuse to have 2 pies!

My ideal Thanksgiving meal:
cornbread dressing in a pan green bean casserole (the "yucky" one) sweet potato casserole canned cranberry sauce homemade rolls corn pudding
I must have chocolate bourbon pecan pie, but other pies in addition to that would not be unwelcome.
Turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy can just suck it.

I like turkey (if it isn't too dry), mashed potatoes and gravy. I don't like green bean casserole, stuffing, cranberries, etc. I do like the other sides that people bring to our family get-togethers (broccoli salad and any other variety of potluck type foods). I am not sure what we will have this year since it will just be the six of us. The kids don't eat most of that and want ham and mac and cheese. I might do a turkey breast in the crockpot (the best way I have found to keep it moist and it is so easy) and DH will smoke a ham or something. And then mac and cheese, potatoes and gravy, and basic veggies. And probably a dessert. I like the idea of having two meals instead of all of that at one meal. But we will see what everyone else says.
