Dh has had constant sinus headaches for the past 2-3 months. He's been on different antibiotics and nothing has worked. Last week he had a CAT scan and discovered he has a slight deviated septum and now has to see an ENT.
Looking online it sounds like he'll have to have surgery, have his nose packed for a week and be pretty much out of commission.
Has anyone had this done? What's the good, the bad, the ugly?

Mine was YEARS ago. Had surgery and my sinuses are still a mess.
I know they've made strides since I've had it done but mine was on the ugly side.

Having your nose packed for a week is THE WORST. I've had many surgeries and this was BAD!!! Make sure he really needs it and that it will help.

They did NOT pack my nose when I had mine straightened. I had my tonsils out at the same time, and the tonsils were more painful, though my nose has been a little tender ever since.

Ugh I had it as well as several sinus surgeries - actually my deviated septum surgery didn't help at all as I had sinus surgeries since then. My nose was packed with stitches and extremely painful and difficult to breathe through my mouth.

I had it done a number of years ago, all I can say is OUCH!! If it is a minor deviation surgery may not be needed, it might not be the cause of his sinus issues. It was a painful surgery and the packing was certainly not fun. I also had splints on the inside of my nose.
Allergy testing might also help him find the cause of his sinus problems.

Several years ago my DH had to have surgery to remove a fatty lump/tumor on his neck. The ENT said, "hey, since I'll have you under, let me fix that nose," lol (his deviated septum).
O.M.G.--my DH was a mess after that surgery. Now granted, he doesn't handle pain too well, but this was bad. When I went with him to the doctor to have his nose packing removed, my DH was damn near screaming. I can't remember if they repacked it (I think they did?), but he said that was the worst pain he's ever been in.

same here. wouldn't do it again. Actually, I didn't do it again. A few yrs after my surgery I still had trouble breathing and went to another doctor. HE said I had a deviated septum and should have surgery... REALLY? Made me wonder if they just tell you that to get money from a surgery out of you. I turned THAT doctor down.
I still have trouble with my breathing and i'll live with it rather than have surgery again.

The packing was the worst part. My nose was not packed for a week though. I think they removed the packing before I went home. My nose was sensitive to the touch for quite some time afterwards... as in months! In my case, I was in so much pain before (deviated septum and obliterated sinuses, completely filled with polyps and gunk), that the amount of pain I had post-op was actually a relief. That surgery made a huge difference for me. I've had probably 2 sinus infections in the 15 years since that time, instead of one constant chronic infection with acute superinfections several times a year.

Several years ago I opted for a Septo-Rhinoplasty by a facial plastic surgeon. The main procedure was the rhinoplasty, but the deviated septum was corrected also. I'm sure my procedure differs from one done by an ENT. My rhinoplasty result turned out better than I could have imagined. My only regret was only having it done sooner.
My breathing improved a little more, not much, but I still have little to no sense of smell. My reoccurring sinus infections were reduced drastically. I might have 1 or 2 every few years vs every few months.
My nose was packed which was awful! That first week I slept upright in a recliner. There were many nights I would wake up panicked because it felt like I was choking or unable to breathe. It was instant relief when the packing was removed! There was a horrific "smell" that I detected a few days prior to the packing being removed. The surgeon said that it was normal. Oh my, it was awful, nauseating!
I had no bruising at all. My surgeon was wonderful! Two weeks prior & post surgery I ate fresh pineapple daily, plus applied arnica cream to my face. I believe those helped also with swelling and bruising. My surgery took 4 1/2 -5 hours.
