Ugh. I knew it was coming but it doesn't make it any easier. I need a new blow dryer and was going to buy the Paul Mitchell one. I'm having a hard time swallowing $200. What're my options? Which ones do you love?

OK, honestly - I bought one of the $200 hair dryers a couple of years ago and while it did a good job, it wasn't anything special, and it stopped working after 6 months. Replaced it with a $25 Conair Ion dryer from Target and it's just as good and has lasted all the time since the old one died - so about two years so far. Cheaper dryers have upgraded to have all the ion/tourmaline/whatever that the more expensive ones do. Save your money and buy a cheap one.

My hairdresser uses an Elchim and I bought one based on her recommendation. Love it. I ordered it in 2011 and use it every other day.
ETA: I looked on Amazon and the price hasn't changed much from when I bought it. Around $125. I'd buy the same one again. And my hairdresser swears by it and hers is used a lot more than mine.

I bought a new Conair with the ion at Target a month ago for approximately $35. I love that dryer!!! The box said "as seen on TV." It's worth taking a chance with one at the price. It's seriously the best hair dryer I've ever owned.

These threads about heated hairstyling products provide me no end of amusement. There seems to be a lot of magical thinking that the appliances that cost hundreds of dollars are somehow invested with mystical, twinkly particles that prevent hair from being damaged when exposed to high heat. My hair is fried just as well with my $30 Conair flatiron from Tar-ghay.

I got tired of buying expensive hair dryers. Yes, I noticed a small difference with my hair but the dryers didn't last. They would die after 6 months to a year. Whereas the really cheapo ones seem to last forever. So I have given up and just get the cheap ones now. My dryer that just died I used almost daily for 4 years. It was $6 at Walmart.

The only difference I notice between a cheap dryer and an expensive one is that the expensive ones don't have that whiny pitch when the motor runs that the cheaper ones do.

Can you guys link the Conair hairdryer that has been mentioned here? My hairdryer popped, sparked, burned some of my hair, and stopped blowing hot air. I've been using my travel dryer in the meantime.

Babyliss! Less expensive brands took 25 minutes to dry my hair. My hair was always dried out as a result. The Babyllis dried my hair fully in 5-8 minutes, and left it without feeling & looking like straw.

Bought an expensive tourmaline t3 hairdryer - piece of junk, had problems with it and it didn't give me frizz free, shiny hair. I have the same con air dryer from Target in hot pink.

I asked for a good one for Christmas and got a Rusk Speedfreak hair dryer. It drys my hair so fast, even on a cooler setting.

I have the same Conair dryer that has been posted. Love it! I've had it for two years with no problems.

My sister has this one that she got as a gift: linkI have this one: linkIt takes about 1/2 hour to 40 minutes to dry my hair whether I use the Sedu or the Babyliss. The Sedu is lighter, it doesn't get as hot, but it doesn't need to because it dries my hair just as well as the Babyliss, which weighs a ton and gets really hot. To those who say that fancy hairdryers don't make a difference--well, as someone who has been drying her hair for about 20 years, I beg to differ. I can see the difference in the way my hair looks when I use a cheapo hairdryer versus an expensive model. Even with the Babyliss, it takes A LOT of brush movement (I use the professional boar bristles salon round brushes) to get the results I want. With the Sedu, there's a lot less effor required and the texture of my hair is awesome afterwards. I lust after my sister's Sedu and want one for myself. Oh, and my hair isn't "fried or damaged," by them either. ETA: I've used the T3 and wasn't impressed. I've used Conair and well, I was like "WTF is this." My hair was laughing at me. My default brand is Babyliss but like I said, my next dyer is going to be a Sedu, hands down!

Rusk Speed Freak from Ulta. I think around $100. It does go on sale sometimes. So good I actually have a backup.

My hairdresser has never recommended a cheap vs expensive dryer, but she said the most important thing was to make sure it has an attachment on the end.

Diane I have the rusk speed freak as well, from ulta, I got it for about $80 on sale + coupon. It dries my hair quicker/better than any of the cheaper brands I've bought in the past. Be careful though, if you hve a cheap brush it can melt the bristles.

If you have unusual amounts of thick hair, the right blow dryer absolutely makes a difference. Do they all fry your hair? It's heat - so to a degree, yes. But a good blow dryer will cut my drying time from 45-60 minutes (depending on humidity levels) to about 25-30 minutes, which obviously lessens the damage, as well as increases my sanity. I always research hair appliances on Folica. Here's a link to their Top 10 hair dryers - Link - top 10 I have the [HASH]2 one (Folica) one that I really like. I've had it for 2 years now, I think? I'll probably try something else the next time I need one just because I like trying new things, but I think it's great. I also have the X5 travel one listed there, which is AWESOME if you travel a lot, especially overseas.
