This is probably a duh question, but...
I want to buy ds (14) a snowboard for Christmas. I know you need boots and bindings too. Don't the bindings have to be screwed in? Does he have to be there for measuring? I want the board ready to go Christmas day but I also want it to be a surprise gift so I don't want to take him ahead of time. Can it be set up ready to go when purchased or will we need to go to the store and have it done which I am sure will take a few days.
Thanks!

Does he have a current snowboard? When do you imagine he is going to go snowboarding (like the 26th or in a week or two)?
Is he okay at snowboarding, good, awesome?
Does he want to go down the slopes or do tricks? Or both?
Honestly, I wouldn't pick it out for him. I get the idea of ready to go and surprise, but it may be better to let him pick it out and make sure it is the right fit

My mom and dad got my brother a gift card for the board shop in town to get it all sized and done.

You don't. Give him a card that tells him he has a credit at the Snowboard shop, or make up a gift certificate that says "good for one snowboard", etc.
Don't try to pick it out for him. Size is a big consideration, plus designs, etc.

Get him a toy one to unwrap. They make plastic ones like sleds

The only time I would consider buying a snowboard for someone is if they have never boarded before and don't know what they want. Otherwise you really do need to leave it up to them to choose their own. I wouldn't have wanted anyone to pick a board for me back when I used to board.
I would buy a certificate and a toy snowboard and wrap them together. I know it's not as exciting as the real deal, but unless your son is a newbie to the sport, it's the best thing to do.

Snowboard family here...This is a pic from our new boards from last year, Burton all the way. These are currently still in the same place from last year. Setup will change with how your stance is, goofy vs. regular, degree of turn. Length of board will be key. I suggest giving him money for a setup. Depends on the degree of enthusiasm... one time vs. life long investment. Burton equipment will not fail, but expensive. Attachments:

Buy a bunch off mini ones from Oriental Trading. Put them in a festive jar with the money for the board in the middle. Something like that would be cute and fun. I'm sure he will want to pick out the board himself.

Or go to the store and take pictures of some different boards and equipment and wrap them with cash,.
