How much do you/your spouse get off around holidays (Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year)? And is it the same every year or does it change depending on scheduling? Obviously some jobs/professions get little or none and no paid days.
I'm just curious. A close friend works for a large mortgage company and hers varies. She gets the actual holidays off but has to put in requests each year for the surrounding days and some years she gets more and others less. This year she is excited as she gets I think five days off in a row around Christmas. Last year it was just the holiday and maybe one other day I believe.
Dh is a self employed general contractor so he just gets what he gives himself and it depends on the workload. Always the holiday itself. When times are slow he takes more whole days. When it's busy he might work half days around the holidays or even full. This year he took off yesterday and is doing some meetings, and checking on a few things this morning and might be home a little early he said.
I work in a college library. I normally get Thursday and Friday off for Thanksgiving and then for Christmas and New Year's I get those days and the days in between off. If I want extra time, I use vacation. However this year because of no raises/promotions and the hell that this year has been for everyone, they are giving us extra days off. We got Wednesday off this week and we also get the two days before Christmas off.

My husband is retail. He worked yesterday and today. He will get Christmas day off but that's it.
When I was working (I'm laid off due to Covid) We would always get Thanksgiving and the day after off. Christmas we would get the actual day (or a Friday or Monday if it fell on a weekend). But I was in sales and it was always super slow around the holidays, so we could take extra paid time if we wanted. We had no set number of hours or days we could take off because we were salary.

Dh is self employed so he can take whatever he wants but doesn’t get paid if he isn’t working.
For my work, thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas, and New Year’s Day are paid holidays. I can also take off any days I want using my leave- if I want it off, I can take it- don’t have to take turns with others etc. the nature of our independent work allows for this. This year I am taking the week of Christmas off. And I took of the day before thanking as well to make it a 5 day break for me.

I'm a teacher. I usually get two weeks at Christmas and one a Thanksgiving. We are on a different schedule this year due to remodeling the school, so I do not get the full time this year, but we are done a week earlier than usual.
Dh works in a hospital. If it is not his holiday to work, he gets the day before and the day of the holiday. Any other time has to be requested off.

I don't get time off unless I take sick time, which I am saving in case I get sick. The days I do my work on are flexible within the week, so if I need a particular day off for something, I can just choose not to work that day and work a different day instead. So nothing different for the holidays.

DH gets the Eve & Day off for both Cmas and New Years--most years he takes the days off in between without any issue. At my new job we officially get the Day off (and it just happens that my day off coincides with the Eve so that's handy). My boss said they usually aren't strict on working our official hours over the holidays, but I'm not sure how lax he means...but with DH & the boys home, I think I won't mind going in on some days...

This year I have nearly all of my PTO left so I’m off from 12/21/20-1/4/21
Some of that is weekend days and the 2 holidays I think I have 10 days off to use up since I didn’t go anywhere. I even tried to take days off during the summer but everytime I did I was told to be at a mandatory zoom meeting or training so the days off didn’t get taken so PTO just piled up. Thankfully I can use it all in December. ( ive already ok the days with my supervisor )
Normally I have between 3-5 days left to take off between the 2 holidays. This year is different

I work at a school (but am hourly). I got yesterday and today off with pay. Wednesday was a half day but we only got paid for hours worked. We’re off for 2 weeks at Christmas but I think I only get paid for Christmas/New Years days, not sure about the eves but I know we don’t get paid for any others.
Dh just started a new job this fall but his previous employers is usually just gave the eves and the days off unless he took vacation time.

Livestock - so no days off. We do slow down on holidays, but still have to chore twice a day.
It used to be tough, back when Santa came to our house. Did we wake the kids up early to find Santa gifts, before Dad went out for chores? Or make them wait to open until Dad got home after chores to open them? It's kind of important that the cattle get fed at pretty much the same time every day - usually we start around 7 and it can take from 2 to 3 hours if everything goes perfect. It can take all day if everything decides to go to $h!t - which it does in the winter! LOL

Hahahaha We work rotating holiday schedules so if you do Christmas Eve that year, you also do NYD and then next year you do Christmas Day and NYE. Thanksgiving is also every other year.
We cannot request time off during the week between Christmas Eve and NYD. My birthday is NYD and I've never been able to request my own birthday off, unlike every single other employee. But that's what I get for working in a hospital.
Sometimes another employee will feel sorry for me and switch days, which is so wonderful! This year another girl is newly pregnant and won't be drinking so she offered to work my scheduled NYE. So I will actually enjoy my birthday this year.
I've spent a lot of holidays with co-workers, which isn't bad at all when they are also your friends.

I work for a large company and we get Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Years Day. The office is closed on those days and on the weekends. There’s also a floating holiday you can use. You can use your PTO if you want extra days off. There are two of us that do the same job and one of us HAS to be working on the days we’re open. Other than that there is no restriction. So we just work the holidays out between us.

I get Thanksgiving and the day after off. We also get Christmas Eve and Christmas off. If the 24th or 25th falls on a weekend, we get the day before of after off. So if Christmas is on a Saturday or Sunday, we'll get the following Monday off. If Christmas Eve is on a Saturday or Sunday, we'll get the Friday before off. We only get Jan 1st off. In total, we have 10 holidays, plus 3 floating days.
My current position, it is easy to take off time at Thanksgiving or during Christmas. My previous position, we could not take off between Christmas and New Years because things had to be done before year-end. One co-worker always wanted Dec 31st off because it was her anniversary, but she was never allowed to take it off.

In my province a good many businesses close between Christmas and New Year’s and pay their employees. Legally it’s 2 days at Christmas and one at New Year’s.
This year DH and I will be off from December 16 to January 4, like our kids’ schools. We have some vacation time left still.

I work for a large financial services company. I typically take time off around Thanksgiving (to bake cookies) and at Christmas I take 2-2.5 weeks off. I save some PTO to do this every year. Today I'm working because it's month end (and I'm an accountant) but I didn't need to work. I figured it'd be quite and I could clear some stuff off my plate. I didn't realize my boss was working and she's been keeping me busy all day. If I had known she was going to be in, I would have taken today off. I'm off December 14-29 however there are certain tasks I will need to log on and complete over that time period. It's year end and things come up so I can't be completely unplugged.

The business that DH works for shuts down his department for two weeks around Christmas / New Years. If they want to get paid, they have to take vacation days.
I took vacation days to be off at the same time. We are done December 18 and return on January 4.

Our construction company varies by department. The “office” employees get thanksgiving and Friday off. The shop union also has thanksgiving and Friday. The field union gets thanksgiving off.
Christmas depends on what day of the week it falls for the office. Shop union gets 1-1/2 days for Christmas (1/2 xmas eve, and Christmas). Field union gets Christmas Day.
Our year end is 12/31, so it’s a push to get billings out at the end of the year. Office employees take what they want as vacation days, but they all know the work has to be done as much as possible because of year end.

If I want extra time, I use vacation. However this year because of no raises/promotions and the hell that this year has been for everyone, they are giving us extra days off. We got Wednesday off this week and we also get the two days before Christmas off. I am similar to this. I work at a big university and we get Thursday-Friday of Thanksgiving week. We used to get just the actual holidays (Christmas Day and New Year's Day) off. Anything extra was our own vacation leave. A few years ago they realized it was more expensive to keep the buildings open with students gone so they added the 4 business days between Christmas and New Year's -- which is great. This year they added Christmas Eve (since we weren't able to observe Homecoming, they just swapped the days). No raises or promotions here either.
My BFF works at a smaller community/state college in another city in FL and she gets much more vacation time -- they follow the student's schedule more closely. So she has off 2-3 weeks at Christmas time. Plus they have off Spring Break for the week -- we don't get that at all.

I work in a boutique law firm and this year our office is closed from December 24 to January 4. We get paid and don't have to use any of our pto. DH gets the stat days Christmas day, boxing day and january 1st. He is in logistics/distribution and it can be slow so sometimes only one or two of them are needed between Christmas and New Years. He may get some time off then but he won't get paid for it.

I work in a school (after school care) and we are off from Dec 18th through to Jan 7th. As I only work one day a week, my last day will be Dec 17th, and I'll be back on the 7th. Always assuming that covid doesn't alter any of our plans.
Dec 24th is a half day public holiday here, and 25th and 26th are full day holidays. We also get a half day on Dec 31st, Jan 1st and Jan 6th as public holidays. DH normally takes from Christmas Eve until at least Jan 2nd off, and often until the 7th. I am not sure what his plans are this year - it is possible he will move back to home office from Dec 18th until Jan 7th at least, and just take a few days as full holidays.

My contract ended recently so all I have is my side hustle and that's whenever I want to work on it.
DH has so much vacation time right now, it's not funny. His office is closed wed-Fri during the week of Thanksgiving and he takes Monday and Tuesday off if they're not busy. December is always slow for his department so if he doesn't have any big projects, he'll take the week off Christmas and NY off even though we don't do much. His office is closed on the Eve and day off the holidays. Many people take their kids' school break off because they're pretty slow. We were going to travel this year but that's not happening.

My husband gets Thanksgiving day and Black Friday off and Christmas Eve through New Year’s Day off, any more he would have to put in a request.
I get Thanksgiving and Black Friday off, if Christmas Eve falls on a week day I have to work but I usually get to leave around 2 pm. Then I’m off Christmas Day through New Year’s Day. I also get all federal holidays off, he doesn’t.
This schedule is new for us as of last year, previously we both worked jobs where we had to be in the office on Black Friday. He got the long stretch at the holidays while I only got Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day off. I had to either be in office or request time off for any other days. I worked for an online retailer so while we didn’t have in person customers we had to be present for email correspondence and for packing orders.

I am considered faculty so I get 3 weeks off from December 20 - January 11. It is not a choice. Also get one week in the spring, no summer break. We work from May - December without a break. Our time off is the same as student breaks, we do not get to pick times.

I work for a health network/hospital and I think they typically included both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as holiday days.
However I am in a 24/365 department so someone has to work the holidays. I take Christmas Eve off ( my birthday and extended family celebration) and work Christmas. I have never taken more time off around the 25th, other than a day here or there during December.
ETA - Thanksgiving day was the only day considered a holiday. I worked it so I had no days off for this holiday.

Yesterday, today, and this weekend will be the most I get for the rest of the holidays. I’ll get three more weekends off in December, but will be on-call on Christmas and the following Saturday and Sunday, and I’m required to go in for at least a few hours each day. I also expect I’ll be racking up a lot of overtime during the weeks. Surgery gets especially busy time of year as people try to get procedures done before their new deductible year starts.
My husband, in Afghanistan as a civilian contractor, works every day. He gets no time off - including weekends and holidays - unless he’s sick. He has vacation accrued but won’t use it since he can’t come home right now. He’ll just cash it out. His job pays well but he definitely earns it.

I work for a NFP in Canada. We work with families and since families are usually busy during the holidays we close fir the 2 weeks that the schools close...this year we close on the 18th and reopen on the 4th.
Within those 10 weekdays are 3 statutory holidays (Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. Our Board of Directors gives us 3 days Gift of Time (GOT is never guaranteed but since implementation we have always received it)
The 4 days remaining can be vacation and/or leave without pay. I actually still have s lot of vacation left. Year end is March 31 and I typically go somewhere warm in March. Since that is sadly not happening this year I may take the week of Dec 14 too.
Thanksgiving isn’t as big a thing here. The holiday is on Monday and that has always been enough.

Dh got our early (3pm) on Wed and had yesterday/today off for Thanksgiving. For Christmas - he gets out early on Christmas and New Year's Eve and gets the day off - if it falls on a weekend, he'll get the Monday off. Taking additional days off during the holidays is hard because his immediate boss always travels for the holidays and so does his level equivalent in the other dept - and they prefer to have a supervisor in the office so...

We usually close the day of the holiday and the day after and then I take whatever other days I want to. I don't have to ask.
