It’s been awhile since we adopted a star from a wishing tree but we decided to do it this year (chosen virtually, just drop off at the local bank). I’m torn on how much is appropriate to spend. They did by individuals, not adopting a whole family.

I/we are pretty generous when I pick kids to donate to. I figure it might be the only presents they get to open on Christmas. I do a toy or two AND practical things like clothes, socks, etc.

The way we've always done it is whatever amount I am spending on my own kid, I do atleast that amount. We always have adopted a girl at christmas and pretty much just treated her like she were our own daughter.

Most of the ones I’ve done the recipient asks for one thing, if there is more than one thing I generally buy 2-3 items on their list, and I’ll pick 3-5 different stars (depending on my budget that year).
Having been on a few teams that distribute the gifts there’s a lot of balancing out after the gifts are donated because inevitably one kid receives one item while another receives a carload full. So I don’t think you should worry about how much to buy and just buy based on what you can afford. If your kid doesn’t get as much as another, or vice-versa, it will be balanced out before they give the kids their gifts.

I usually get a book, something they’ve asked for, and a $50 gift certificate

When the boys were younger and money was tighter, I tried to find a good deal on a gift that was under $25.
Now they're older, don't want 100 toys, and we're doing better money-wise, I keep it under $50. DH's company adopts a family every Christmas. We pick something from each kid's list.

Is a wishing tree the same as an angel tree?

Is a wishing tree the same as an angel tree? Yes, I think so. I try to pick one that has several items requested that I can afford to get all of.

The ones I've done are usually for a very specific item ("pink princess scooter" is one I remember). I do think there have been some that were a little vague (size 7 girl's sandals) in which case I try to get high quality items.

I'm doing the kids in 3 families this year. All families are currently homeless and being housed at a local hotel. The first family has all girls, 17, 15, and 13. The 2nd is just an 8-year-old girl. The last has a 5 month old boy and then 1 and 2 year old girls. I am spending about $75 on each child. Trying to have some practical things, nothing too big or too loud.
