I know that iPhones have the "find my iPhone" app, does android have a similar app?
eta: you have to turn it on for each device, so I imagine if android has a similar app, your son would have had to turn it on.

My daughter just lost hers last night. She has an iPhone. She said that she was able to put it in "lost mode" using another phone so that if someone finds it, they can't use it. I would call the company he has the plan with. They can help you.

Yes, there is something you can install remotely IF the phone is on and able to receive a signal. Google how to find your Android device. I had to do this a few months ago, but it didn't work because my phone got run over by a car :/
You can shut it down also, and have it ring, and take photos/audio (how creepy) and track its location with its GPS. Again, that's only if it's on and receiving a signal. Definitely worth a try.

Great news! Except for it spending the night in the snow. At least no one else got a hold of it.

That's great that he found it!
Just in case anybody else needs this information, Sprint has a phone locator service. There is a small monthly charge, but definitely worth it. Dh lost his phone, we tried calling it and nobody answered it, at first. Then I went online to the Sprint site to see if they had a way to track it, and found the service. So, I did the free trial and they were able to track where the phone was. It wasn't too far from where we had been the night before, but obviously has been moved from where he lost it. So he got in the car and drove there while I kept tracking the phone and telling him where it was (it was moving!). Then I called his phone again, and this time somebody answered it. I asked the guy where he was and could we come get the phone. Dh had a lock on the phone, so it wouldn't do the guy any good anyway. So I was able to direct dh to where the guy and his phone was. It was one of the downtown homeless people who had it. So dh gave him $20 for returning it - a little dirty but no worse for the wear! We were lucky he didn't just destroy it. And he was happy to have $20 in his pocket.
We're keeping the locator service because it really did help.
