My 13+ year old red ATG has had issues with the tape breaking, so I assumed it was because the last rolls I used up were from an older box I found packed away for 8 years. Finished the last roll and started a new roll from Michael’s and now it won’t roll at all. It’s the ATG, not the tape  The clear plastic front has gotten brittle and warped inwards, putting pressure on the take up reel and preventing it from turning correctly. So the old tape would break to relieve the pressure, and the new tape just doesn’t roll at all. I can remove the black cap on the take up reel and it has enough space to spin freely again. That works for a little while, but then the empty reel either rolls off or loses tension. I’m going a little crazy adjusting the take up reel constantly. I don’t love how huge it is but the ATG tape has the elusive trinity of effective, low waste and inexpensive. The red and yellow ones are still pretty expensive, but I paid about $5 per year on the last one. How well made is the pink one that Michael’s sells? Amazon has an ATG 50 with mixed reviews - I suspect it is really a grey market knockoff? |

I still have a red one and I also have the pink one. I have had both of them for years and years. They are the same tool. I got my pink one at Michaels with a 60% off coupon. No complaints at all. Many of the mixed reviews are probably from people who never learn how to properly load it. I run into people at crops all of the time who say the tape is on the wrong side or doesn't load. That is user error. They are bigger than some of the other runners, but are by far cheaper to use. For me, I'd get one from Michaels.

I prefer to use the tape without the ATG gun. I personally could never get the hang of it and I wasted a lot of adhesive when I would load the ATG gun. I press the tape down on paper, cut off the amount that I want, rub, and pull it off. It's like the way you use Xyron X 150 rolls.
This works better for me because I do more pocket scrapping and generally use smaller sized papers and embellishments. It's awkward for me to use the gun on little areas.

I still have a red one and I also have the pink one. I have had both of them for years and years. They are the same tool. Me too: I see no difference between my red and pink versions. They are both going strong (well, the latch broke on the clear front panel on one when I accidentally launched it across the room, but I keep it closed with a large elastic around the body. Can't blame anyone but myself on that one1) and I would not consider changing adhesives as they are my favourite despite the size. Actually, I *like* the size because they don't get lost on my desk! |

I have a red one and a pink one and my red one is giving me trouble.
The pink one is still going strong. I feel like that one will eventually tore out as well. I’ve had them both for over 10 years, so I definitely feel like I got my money’s worth out of them.

I don't love the size either, but my ATG is here to stay. I also have the red and the pink and never even thought they might be different quality. I use one for the general purpose tape for when I make cards or other non-SB projects.

I have only ever had the pink one, for about 9 or 10 years. I am very pleased with it, and am considering getting a backup as I know someday this thing is going to wear out!!

Have you considered reaching out to 3M? When I contacted them a few years ago for an issue their customer service was incredible. They replaced the item no questions asked.

That might be years. They don't even offer more than 30% off right now...generally it's just 20% and they don't take competitor's coupons anymore. The pandemic probably hit them hard, but without coupons, I don't buy anything but the items that regularly go on deep discount (cardstock, certain frames, photo boxes, seasonal items and the like) or happen to be on clearance (like the $1 stickers and a few months back, they had 97 cent copic ciao markers). I've read that they have a LOT of debt which could very well be the cause for the change. It came up when reading about the BK filed by Tuesday Morning. |
