My son's ex girlfriend who remains a close friend of his, is out of work again. She is very artistically talented but just can't keep a job. Right now she only wants to work at home and has lost two work at home jobs.
I have a 12 inch printer/scanner and a laptop I'm not using. I was thinking of hiring her to scan all my layouts to the laptop so I can make photo books like Shutterfly. I have thousands of layouts and completed albums. I was thinking of starting with DS2's sports albums because I know he enjoys looking at them but he moved to California and taking his unwieldy albums was not an option.
What amount should I offer her to do this job if she is willing? I have no intention of paying her enough to avoid getting a job, but this would be to supplement whatever income she gets. Right now her registration on her car is expired and she can't afford to renew it so she can't drive to a job.
She would have to take each layout out of a page protector, scan it in and then put it back. Should I pay by the scan and if so, how much? If she takes the layouts out of the album and just sits next to the scanner she could be able to do an entire album in an hour, especially once she gets the hang of it.
Or should I just have her take photos of each layout instead of scanning?
Thoughts and ideas about this idea?

What a wonderful idea!! You are a good person. Such a kind gift, or win win.
If it were me, I'd pay her by the hour. Don't know where you are or what wages are in your area. Good luck. Hope it works out.
Wish I could find someone to scan all of my parents old photos!
Good luck.

I would scan the pictures unless you had a stellar camera.
How many pages are in your album? Because I'm pretty sure I could not do an entire album of mine in one hour. Maybe 10-20 pages in an hour, considering taking each page out, scanning it, checking it and then putting it back in the album. So 3-6 mns per page. Mostly probably 3mns a page, but imagine some issues here and there.
I'd probably pay her by the album and if your average album has 50 pages in it, I'd offer $50 per album.

If you can figure out what the value of the entire project is to you, I'd offer a flat amount for her to do the whole project and then add a "tip" based on how satisfied you are with the end result. Once she got the hang of it, it shouldn't take long unless the software is slow, etc. Photographing them may be a good backup but I'd be hesitant unless you know her skills in photography or editing. You'd hate to have her take pics and then you have to edit them all yourself. All reasons why I'd offer a reasonable flat amount and if you are pleased with how they turn out and if they are ready to turn send for albums, then give her a tip for doing a great job. It's very kind of you to help her out, hope it works out

I have no idea, but that is so nice of you! Maybe you could look into what local businesses are charging? I'm not even sure what business that would be.

I wouldn’t do photos if scanning is an option. I tried to do that myself some years ago and even with researching how to do it well and having decent skills I wasn’t happy with the results.

I would either pay for the whole job (like per album, or whole collection) or by the page. If you pay by the hour it's difficult for you to judge her pace. I'm thinking it will be about 3-5 min/page because she has to check the quality of the scan, and there are bound to be some hang-ups as she goes. So I think I'd offer .50-1.00/page personally, depending on your own budget!

I'd recommend against paying unsupervised work by the hour. Personally I'd work out what minimum wage would be for the task, and start there. You can always add a bonus for particularly timely or excellent work. And for the love of little apples, make a basic contract (parameters of the task, pay, time frame) and have both of you sign it. It'll offer some peace of mind for everyone.
Maybe do one album as a trial run before committing to the whole kit and caboodle. I've been burned doing gig work for a friend-of-a-friend and the internet is full of similar stories. Wanting to help is a wonderful thing but never forget this is a business transaction. Treat it like one.

I would hire her on a flat rate to do the sport albums, and then ask to extend to others if you're happy with the quality. Avoid a commitment for "all" your albums just in case the scans don't turn out the way you hoped. I wouldn't want that expectation/disappointment to risk marring my relationship.

The hardest part of the job is reinserting the layouts. My suggestion is to purchase a poster size cardstock, cut 2 sheets of 11¾ X 14" to facilitate returning the layouts to the sleeve. Also use a corner rounder on the bottom edges of the guides to make the job easier. This will eliminate hang ups of any raised items on the layouts. Of course you can send money.

Are you layouts 12x12? I would love to know what kind of scanner you have that will scan a 12x12. I am on the lookout to buy one and they are all expensive.
Thanks

A slight hijack, but if she did this for you it could be a little niche side gig. There’s a company called Plum Prints that scans Kid’s artwork and I think it’s $175 for a 20 page album. I think the business would be there for someone to do this for about $50 so they can upload to Shutterfly and save about 50%.

I would pay per album/scrapbook, not per hour. If she works slow, by hour would cost you more.
I would start with one album, and see how it goes. If you are satisfied, then request her to do more.
I could write up a little contract and have her sign it, that way there's no miscommunications in expectations.
One album: Each layout removed from sheet protect. Scanned, then returned to sheet protector in which it was removed. With the amount of "$$" being paid for each album. Each album is to be completed in "whatever time frame" you designate.
Note: You mentioned her car registration. Don't be surprised or upset, if she doesn't use the money you pay her, to pay for the registration. Unless you and she specifically agree upon that. Your intentions are good. But, she may receive the funds from you, and have an entirely different priority for it >> like coffee or new shoes. Because...everyone's level of responsibility and priorities are different. Your idea to help her, may not go as you planned or for your intended purpose.

I guess I watch too many court shows, because I wouldn't enter into this kind of arrangement with someone who isn't able to keep a job. There has to be a reason she's lost so many jobs. It could also potentially affect your relationship with her. I don't know your financial situation, but it might be better to pay for her car registration (directly). Again, this is just my opinion, and I don't know your situation. All the best for 2021.

I sent the scanner over to her house so I can't look it up, but I will ask the person I bought it from or message the girl and ask her and get back to you.

I would do a time test to see how long it would take me to do 5 pages then use that to figure out approximately how long it would take to scan an album (including naming the file and any cursory adjustments to the scan you would like her to make). Then using an hourly wage, calculate how much to pay her for to scan the sports album. (i.e. if it would take about 4 hours to scan the album @ $12/hour - offer her $48 to do the album).
