FBI at a house connected to the explosion. RV or similar has been parked there for months in driveway, as seen on Google maps in past, confirmed by neighbors. Very curious about what is going on.

I realise that telecoms equipment was damaged but my understanding is that here, uk, that shutting down telecoms is a normal response to frustrate any terrorists plans to communicate or remotely detonate any further bombs.

I have family in the area and all of their cellphones lost service so they couldn’t call anyone or send texts. It’s not just cell phones- anything in the AT&T network is down. 911, hospital in house phones and pagers, ATMs, debit card processing, internet, faxes...while there are redundancies and contingency plans this really exposes the vulnerabilities in our infrastructure.

I was able to receive a call today on my landline so things are getting better. I am not sure if the 911 system is working yet though. Some ATMs worked some didn't. The Walmart 40 mins from me could only take cash and had to cancel all their grocery pick ups today. It also shows you how interdependent on each other communication companies are. We don't have AT and T at all. But the whole state was affected no matter whose name is on the top of your phone bill.
ETA: our cell phones were never affected, 911 yes, and our landlines were wonky. Couldn't make calls to any landlines but we could call cell phones. No land lines were receiving calls till tonight.

In my moms group on FB the conspiracy theories are insane. The latest is the dominion voting machines were going to be analyzed in the AT&T building so “they” blew up the building to hide the massive voter fraud. But now “they” keep pulling news articles offline so people can’t read the truth.
I’m like who the hell is they?!?!

We live a couple hours east of Nashville. Told DH I think it was a Trump acolyte. I live in Pennsylvania and used to work for a local bank. One Saturday years ago, all of our debit and credit cards stopped working as well as all of our ATMs. People were at Walmart and the grocery store with full carts but no way to pay for their things. People were on vacation trying to buy tickets for a theme park and couldn't do it. People were stuck in restaurants with no way to pay. It was chaos. And it was all because somebody accidentally cut into a fiber optic cable in I think South Dakota. The processing of our debit and credit cards was done by a company that was located in the state where the cable was cut. So even though we weren't anywhere close to the cut cable, it brought our bank to a stand-still because we couldn't communicate with the processing company. Any kind of disruption to communication can impact an area much greater than the immediate area. If terrorists really want to bring us down, they'll go after the communication grid. If we don't have phones, internet, radio or tv we are cut off.

This is what is so scary that we are so vulnerable and something like this could mess up the whole system or at least a large area if the right place was hit. Its hard to believe there aren't more redundancies in our system.

DD ran in to get cat food and milk and she called me to tell me not to worry--people were abandoning their carts full of food on line to pay because everything shut down. There were no accidents nearby and the manager said that this has never happened in any Publix store, ever.
We never did find out the cause, but cutting off the computer system there really messed up a ton of people for hours. I'm sure that it could happen on a much larger scale, which is frightening!!!

It happened to several stores in my area and then Target stores all over I remember when that happened at Target. I’m thinking it has happened at a few other stores here to I just forgot about it. I’m thinking Target was widespread.

So they have a person of interest now and have publicly identified this individual.
I’m not entirely surprised that Trump hasn’t made any kind of statement about this, but I am surprised that the TN governor’s request for Trump to declare a state of emergency has been met with “the request is currently under review”.
Sadly, I’d expect this for a blue state, but TN is not. I have other thoughts about this as well based on what I’ve been reading but I could be wrong.

Not unwilling at all--but I think I'm dumber than other more well-informed posters, LOL, and sometimes hesitant. But I'll bite. I think Trump has been well-informed of all that's been happening through his aides and cronies. From early news reports, it seems like there's a good chance that this guy is some sort of paranoid, extremely right-wing incel. He's white. My theory is that Trump knows all this (and perhaps more) and for this reason is keeping quiet about it, wanting to pretend that it hasn't happened. Otherwise I think he'd be more vocally supportive of a red state and requests from it's Republican governor and Republican Senators and Representatives. I also think that he's just done. He's on vacation, and he's not capable of any kind of governing at this point, not that he ever really was.

Jili your words are well thought out. I am sure more then a few have had the same thoughts, as have I. They are about to share some info at 4pm CT/5pm EST, but I do think major info will be released very slowly. There are no doubts in my mind that dt has checked out and probably knows far more then any of us do and will not for some time to come.

You’d better believe that if the FBI thought this could be Islamist terrorists or Antifa or something, you’d be hearing about it from him via a tweet storm.

BBC reporting that someone/a suspect died in the RV? Yup, the owner Anthony Warner, who had been mentioned yesterday. FBI/ATF had searched his house yesterday. Not sure, having second thoughts on his first name.

CNN is now reporting that the bomber suspect’s father used to work for BellSouth that was bought out by AT&T. So they think that is why or suspect that is why the RV blew up where it did.
