Disclaimer up front.... my dh is a good guy. So...he went to one of those stores that have everything -- World Market I think it was. He found a lovely little basket, soft-ish, round, with two handles. He filled it with a bunch of fun things -- coffee, tea, chocolate, etc. Everything is something that I like -- i.e., pumpkin spiced coffee, Earl Grey tea.... I said "yum, thanks! And I love this cute basket." He replied "yes, I thought you could use it for something else, maybe a sewing basket..." um.... hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha I have been known to mend a hem using duct tape. During our 30 years of marriage has he EVER seen me sew anything? Duct tape and fabric glue are my go-to sewing accessories. His mother no doubt had a sewing basket. Sewing basket. hahahahaha I plan to use it for my book journal, and Bible, and pens.... stuff like that. Sewing basket. hah.

His heart was in the right place, though it's a funny situation.

My dad bought me a huge set of screwdrivers. ππ. I feel like a guy.

Your "sewing basket" sounds lovely. I got a leaf blower that I didn't know I wanted or needed.

In past years my oldest son me a bench vise, a band saw, a miter saw, and a disc/belt sander combo. He gets me, he says his friends all laugh when he tells them what heβs buying me. I love them all. Iβve worked with my hands all my life and I like it.

My daughter's husband buys her one gift a year that is really for him. In the past this has included a spoiler bar for his car and dark chocolate covered strawberries. (She doesn't like dark chocolate.) It's a running gag they have.

Many moons ago, my first husband decided to get me a micro-wave for Christmas. He informed both sides of the family about his plan. Than one day I happened to mention that I did not care for micro-waves. The man wisely changed his plan. However, he forgot to tell our families. I got micro-wave cookware from EVERYBODY. I still have some of it - never used. And this was in the mid-80's.

That sounds like my DH. A few years ago he got me something he called a tea pot. I don't drink tea. Ever. And when I went and looked it up, it was a pricey pot for boiling water to make coffee pour overs. I don't do pour overs, we use a drip coffee maker.

I love this thread.
I'd be totally happy with anything but that leaf blower! I got a washer for my birthday one year. The one we had died a few days before. Came home from work on my birthday and there was my shiny new washer waiting for me to use it. LOL. I don't mind doing laundry, just the timing of it all was funny.

My husband got a hi-rise toilet for Valentine's one year!!
Disclaimer- he had said we needed to change the toilet to the higher one so I called the plumber to get an appointment. He just happend to have one in stock and time on the 14th to install it. It is one of our family "fun" moments.

I agree. They can be so weird. My husband asked and asked what I wanted - finally I came up with something: a professional fitting on my Peloton bike. One of the instructors has a team that does it over FaceTime and that sounded great to me. I sent him all the information - he was so happy to have something to give me that made me happy. After we opened our gifts, I asked "what happened to the Peloton fitting?" Him: "OOOOOOOOOH! I totally forgot about that."

Your "sewing basket" sounds lovely. I got a leaf blower that I didn't know I wanted or needed. We call those kinds of gifts "a bowling ball named Homer" after the Simpsons episode in which Homer gives a Marge a bowling ball with "Homer" engraved on it thinking she won't want it he can have it. When asked about the engraving he said that was the ball's name. Of course she sees through his plan and decides to take bowling lessons. I gave DH a list of books I would like thinking he could pick one or two. He got me all of them with the exception of one that sold out it's first printing within weeks of it's release. I'm okay with it though. I just thought it was funny. I never turn down a gift of books.

I lucked out and before the pandemic had a guy from our local bike shop come out and do mine. He had started a side business of fitting people on their Pelotons, since he does it for people on their road and mountain bikes normally. It was a game changer for me!! Huge improvement in comfort and performance!

I love that he filled a basket with things you like! And I am picturing a salesperson telling him you could use the basket afterward for a sewing basket and him thinking, 'yes!' So funny.

On occasion my hubby and I enjoy drinking port. I don't have any little port glasses, so I asked him for 2, maybe 4 glasses. It's just the two of us, so unless we have company over, we really don't have any need for more than 4 port glasses. Lo and behold, what do I open on Christmas Day but 12 crystal port glasses! I appreciate the thought and that he actually listened to me, but what the heck am I going to do with 12 port glasses?!?
