I'm 58. In the last few months, I've noticed more stiffness in the mornings..especially my legs. I know losing weight will help. I walk and do strength training with my Skype trainer 3-4 times a week. Trying to add some yoga to help. Thinking that sugar may be a culprit...also not drinking enough water. I'm really just grasping for ideas...except for being overweight (which i need to work on), I have no other health problems. Anyone else?

I started having this problem about two years ago. Overweight plus arthritis in both knees and a lower back injury from my teens equals stiff as hell in the morning. I googled and found a series of stretches to do right before bed that helps keep your muscles loose and relaxed overnight. I lost the link, but the one stretch that I think does the most help is the knee to chest stretch. Lying on your back one at a time bend your knee to your chest and grab your shin with your hand and hold your leg like that for 5-10 seconds. it stretches the muscles that run from your lower back down to the back of your knee. When I remember to do this before bed I notice a huge difference in how long it takes me to stand upright when getting out of bed in the morning.

I don’t know that I was ever really stiff in the mornings, but I cut way back on sugar and started doing yoga almost two years ago and my body felt so much better almost immediately. I remember my hips feeling the most significantly different. I now do yoga daily - usually in the evening before bed and I am never stiff in the morning (I’m 49). So I’d recommend yoga and/or stretching for sure.

Stretch before going to bed. Stretch before getting out of bed. Stretch whenever you can during the day.
It may feel counterintuitive, but use your body more. Move more. Keep moving. We add more conveniences into our lives that keep us from walking, bending, reaching, stooping, resisting. Do all of these things. Keep using your body.
Then stretch some more.

If you are comfortable sharing your city I could find an organization you could link up with. I lost 26 pounds canvassing!

I have severe osteoarthritis throughout my body with boths knees and one hip already replaced at age 42 - I'm 52 now. I'm very stiff in the morning. I alternate between taking Aleve and prescription Voltaren. Really what helps me the most though is movement. Walking into the Y I'm so stiff and thinking I'm not going to make it through class, but walking out I feel so much better. I can't do yoga type of classes since I can't knee due to plastic kneecaps, but I do cardio step, a strength training class, Zumba, and high fitness (old school aerobics).

I have had a ton of tightness in my hips mainly from sitting all day long at my desk. I've been using the foam roller quite a bit now. I know it seems like common sense on how to foam roll, but finding a good foam rolling class really does help. I do a couple from the Peloton app, and I found some good ones on Instagram as well. I also went to see a sports massage therapist.

Stretch before bed, stretch in bed when you awaken. Yoga classes are great.
Lose weight, cut the sugar, and increase your water intake. Even taking 10 pounds off makes a huge difference. Water is your best resource for hydrating your body. Up the oils in your diet for joint health, and look for a collagen supplement.
You say you do weight training, but is it intensive enough? I have genetic issues with hip flexibility and range of motion and the biggest thing that helped was to build the muscles around my hips and thighs. So, I lift heavy and do squats to build the muscles. And stretch to keep flexible. Stretch every single day, no excuses. Most you can do lying on the floor lol so really, no excuses.
I'll be 60 this year, keeping flexible and in shape is a constant project. The older we get, the easier it is to lose strength and flexibility.

I'm not sure of the density but it is the white one which I think is more entry level. I haven't felt the need to go to something that is more firm yet. Mine is the standard 36" one.

I agree when I over do sugar, it can be a culprit. I started taking Magnesium supplements about 6 months ago and it has made a big difference with morning stiffness. I used to get up in the morning and immediately take Aleve. After a month or so of taking the Magnesium, I realized I had stopped taking the Aleve because I no longer needed it. Taking a hot shower first thing in the morning also is very helpful for me.

I get down on the floor and stretch right after getting out of bed. Knee to chest stretches and a few others to stretch my hips. Makes a difference for me.
