In September Ken Jennings was hired by Jeopardy as a producer. I figured they were bringing him on getting prepared for Alex’s passing. I wonder if they’ll cut him loose or just keep him behind the scenes? I think Ken has already taped the first two weeks of shows that start 1/11. Alex’s last shows air 1/4 thru 1/8

Why would they? There are hundreds of thousands (millions?) of asses making offensive comments on Twitter daily. They only become headline/attention-worthy when the tweeter steps into the public spotlight in a significant way. But..he’s been in the spotlight. Aside from his winning streak he’s participated in numerous tournaments, he’s the punch line in late-night comedy show jokes, he’s a total d-bag but he’s enough of a name that most people know of him, But I guess it’s like the Hillary/Hilaria Baldwin stuff where some people have known all along but it doesn’t become headline until the right person digs into it at the right time. His winning streak was in 2004 - 7-8 years before the first of the offensive tweets. People know of him from that run 16+ years ago (kids getting their driver’s licenses this year weren’t born when that happened), but it wasn’t until he was set up to replace Alex Trebek that he was truly in the spotlight again, imo. We old farts clearly remember him, but anyone under the age of 34 was still in K-12 when he made his run on Jeopardy.

Aww dang it, I have a soft spot for Ken Jennings. I knew him in college. He’s a quirky dude, I’d almost put money on him being on the spectrum. He has an incredible amount of facts in his brain and not as much... uhh... emotional intelligence.
Anyway, I’m sad to see this. I don’t like his past tweets that he is under fire for, but I still like him.

Why didn’t Jeopardy producers vet his social media postings.

I’d really like a host that’s not a white male.

I never really cared for Ken Jennings one way or the other. I would love to see LeVar Burton as the new Jeopardy host (though I don't do twitter, so I don't know if his feed makes him worthy of the job) - apparently there is a petition about it.

There’s a special layer of Ick Factor when a very smart person feels it necessary/entertaining to denigrate people whose own abilities are limited in various ways.
Not at all different from the hot girl tweeting about unattractive or overweight people.

There was a prior thread when some (not all) of these tweets popped up. I don't understand them. I really do not. There is an acceptable apology for one ugly tweet (abject apology and showing change), but there is none for the amount of ugly tweets he posts. I really liked him. I wanted him as the new Jeopardy host, but absolutely not now. There is an absolute pattern of ugliness here.
It is truly disappointing.

He's certainly not going to get the job now.
Why such a focus on the disabled/handicapped? What a strange group to joke about repeatedly like that.

If he had 500,000 followers, I have a hard time believing that the producers of Jeopardy were totally unaware of Jennings’ tweets.
I think smart techy type men get a huge pass in our society when it comes to this type of thing.
ETA: I can only imagine how different the comments on this thread would be if Ken Jennings was an NFL football player, a female comic or a famous rapper.

Ken did fine for an interim host, but he isn't a feasible long term choice. He has too many connections in the trivia world. Too many good players would be excluded from consideration because of connections with the host. I think he was a good choice for the first fill in. He is familiar to viewers who are dealing with the loss of Alex. It is jarring enough having anyone but Alex there. A complete stranger would be too extreme.

I think I read somewhere that Katie Couric is the next host on tap to do some interim hosting. I think she'll be a good host!

I've heard Jacques Bailly's name thrown around as a possible host, too. That would be cool. (He is the current pronouncer at the Scripps Spelling Bee every year.)

Aaron Rodgers has announced he will be one of the guest hosts as well. Even my DH, who LOVES Aaron, thinks he is a bizarre choice.
I'd like to see Andy Richter guest host. He holds the record for highest winnings for a celebrity on the show, has great respect for the game and is used to not being the focus of attention.

I want Buzzy Cohen or Brad Rutter to be the next host. I’m a long time Jeopardy! fan who could not stand Ken. It he’s done a great job guest hosting the last 2 days. I really don’t care what he tweeted 10 years ago.

sort of related to Ken's able-ism.
Do you use the term "lame" to describe something as not good?
Please stop.

One of the valid definitions of the word lame is to mean dull and uninspiring — unrelated to the use of the word to describe an animal with a leg that does not function typically. This reminds me of my thesis supervisor who freaked out and lost it on me because I once described the movement of a cell struggling to divide as it contracted back and forth, as “spastic”. He couldn’t see that word as anything other than an insult, when it is a authentic adjective used to describe that type of movement. Not all words are insults.

In it, he said that for Celebrity Jeopardy, there is no "test" they have to pass and the questions are easier. Alex wrote that Aaron was one of the celebrities he thought could qualify for and win regular Jeopardy without them having to dumb it down.

1. (especially of an animal) unable to walk without difficulty as the result of an injury or illness affecting the leg or foot. "his horse went lame"
2. (of something intended to be entertaining) uninspiring and dull. "I found the program pretty lame and not very informative"
Both are acceptable. If I was at a boring seminar and called it lame, I certainly don't picture a person who has a walking disability. And I wouldn't see someone walking down the street and think 'lame' either.

I think Ken is doing a wonderful job. There will never be another Alex though and it will take time to get used to a new host. We do, too. I like the faster pace which I think Alex did in his younger days. Katie Couric is to be one of the guest hosts. That is the week I'll have trouble watching. She is one of my least favorite journalists and it is a real stretch to call her that.
