. . . do you leave 'em plugged in? I tend to unplug mine after a few hours. I unplug it if I leave the house, and I surely take it out of the socket at night. Is that necessary?

I never take mine out until the scent container is empty. This I plug them in and forget about them for a few weeks until I realize I can't smell them anymore and then I replace the bulb.

If you lay it on its side once the cap is off, which I'm assuming you are doing when you unplug it, you are leaking scented oil/liquid. They are made to be left in 24/7, which is what I do with mine, however I'm enjoying Glade wax cubes more this season and may just switch.

Another who leaves it in until I remember to check it, sometimes it still has liquid in and other times it doesn't so I'll change it then. I have yet to figure out how long they last. I don't do it by smell because they are great when you first put them in but I think you become accustomed to the aroma and don't notice it quite as much as when you first plug them in. I will say I was nervous at first leaving them plugged in all the time but then figured I would have no problem leaving a night light in all the time and this wasn't much different.

Wow, thanks ladies! That's it, then, I'll leave it plugged in and try not to worry about it. And, you're right elaine, I laid one on it's side once and lost half the liquid. I keep it upright all the time now!

I unplug them about every 30 days when I replace it.
BUT....and this might change my answer in the future, one of them malfunctioned and wasn't working. Makes me think about, "What if it had gone the other way, and overheated?"
Whatever you you are most comfortable with.

I also leave mine plugged in until they are empty. I refill it and then plug it in again.

I leave mine plugged in all the time but if I go away for a weekend I don't like to leave it plugged in just in case it would over heat. I found that a glass votive candle holder is perfect for holding them. I place the bulb inside the votive holder and the plug part hangs on the outside. The votive holder keeps it upright until I'm ready to plug it back in again.

Be careful of the oil....I unplugged one and set it on the windowsill once while I was using the outlet for something else. Well the oil that leaked out literally ate the paint right off the windowsill!

As for them overheating, I don't think that will happen because there have been weeks that we leave them in and they are empty. Nothing ever happens. I don't have them under any cabinets and I do know about them eating the paint off of things. We have several that are nightlights so that is why they stay plugged in.

Makes me think about, "What if it had gone the other way, and overheated?" Whatever you you are most comfortable with. The actual plug in part is expected to last around a year. If it lasts less than that, you can take them back and they'll replace them. I had two stop working after less than 6 months, and they replaced them.

I have never paid for them to be replaced. I don't care how long they are supposed to last, if they break, I take them back and they have never given me any problems with exchanging them. I have done it at least a dozen times.

Same thing happened to me, my cleaning lady unplugged and turned it upside down to plug it back in - duh. The liquid stripped the paint off of my baseboard.
