I have had a Silhouette Portrait since 2013 or 2014. I haven't had any problems with it until recently when it stopped working with my computer. DH moved it to his computer but that means I can't use it while he's working or surfing the internet which is when I scrap...
I am sort of thinking of upgrading to the Cameo... the cord on the portrait is super short and if I didn't have to have it plugged in on the computer desk that would be a plus... if that's even been an improvement in the last seven years (maybe not?)
Being able to use the machine it on the computer DH doesn't use for work would be a bonus.
And of course the 12 by 12 size would mean I could cut bigger things, but then I'd have to buy new mats...
I only use the machine for cutting titles and die cuts.
On the other hand I'm cheap, the old machine works just fine, and I can use the old one just only on evenings and weekends.
Also, I'm sure there was just some huge sale and I missed it or something.
Any tips, tricks or enabling is welcome.
Thanks!

Why doesn't the Portrait work with your computer anymore? I would make sure that the Cameo will work, and you won't have the same problem. If the Cameo will work, I'm in favor of treating yourself to an upgrade. You can always keep the Portrait as a back-up. Have fun!

Older models have issues with Windows 10, so that might be why your Portrait is having problems.
I just recently upgraded to the Cameo 4 (I had an older one) in November. The Bluetooth connectivity is the best part. I love not having that extra cord connection. It works so much better with the layout in my craft room.
Definitely shop around. I didn’t need the big bundles and found mine on sale at Michaels for $269, which was $30 less than most other places
I use mine for titles, some shapes and journaling. You do need to get new sketch pens for the 4, the older white barreled ones don’t work.

DH is the computer nerd in the house but I think something to do with Windows and one of the updates. He messed with it for a while but couldn't get the computer to admit the Silhouette was hooked up (it had worked fine a few weeks before that).

I had to use an older Win7 computer (thank goodness I kept it) to download the Portrait 1 firmware and update the Portrait. Since then I've had no problems running it with Win10. (I had to update the firmware to run the Designers' Edition software) If that doesn't work then I think a new machine should be in your future. ETA: my Win10 is up to date and I don't have issues.

It sounds like maybe I should mess around with the software more before upgrading then.

If you do end up needing a new machine but don't want to spring for the Cameo 4, Silhouette just came out with the Portrait 3 a few months ago. I'm not sure what differences there are from the Portrait 2, but its on sale on Swing Design for $175.
