I am getting divorced this year and will have to sell my house within the next few months. A lot of the places I like online have carpets in the apartment. Seeing as how the place is fairly small (700-900 sq ft) is it feasible to get a rug to cover the entire carpet? I have two senior cats and a little dog that are bound to have accidents. I don't want to ruin the apartment carpet and I don't see a lot of places available that are not carpeted? Is anyone in this same situation?

It won’t matter if you put a rug over the carpet, the pee will soak through especially if they tag the same places over and over again.

Most of our house is carpeted, not a fan but husband is. I keep a can of foam upholstery cleaner and rags in a particular place so I know where to go to grab them for use. Anytime something needs cleaning like cat puke, I spray the foam cleaner on the spot and wipe it up with the rags or paper towels. The foam lifts the puke or other stuff right up out of the carpet. This works for me and I don't see any spots after eleven years. Having a good vacuum cleaner helps with the pet hair and we are good.
I was was thinking the other day that many apartment complexes replace the rug for each new tenet. Then there are those places that require a pet deposit for that as well. I know it would be hard on a person who is allergic to cats to live in an apartment with carpet when a cat lived there before them. So there has to be something the apartment complex does for this situation.

I’ve not lived in an apartment where they replace the carpet for each new tenant. Maybe it happens in more upscale units, or after a long tenancy?
I would get a carpet cleaner. If we had a pet accident, I would clean the surface. Then I would douse the area with Nature’s Miracle and use the carpet cleaner again. I’m sure there was residue in the pad, but hopefully it was neutralized by the Nature’s Miracle.

I hate carpet. I have bits and pieces of carpet strewn around my house because, well, you know, you sort of have to. My dogs rarely have accidents or throw up, but when they do, it is always, but always on the carpet. UGH. I moved one carpet for Christmas and saw that one (Gus!!) must have peed on one space. The floor beneath is ruined . I am super sad. I didn't even notice the pee or smell it and I have a super smeller, but it was a big area. They have washable carpets that are HUGE and I would highly recommend. But if you can't see where they pee immediately, I think it will soak through and it will be bad. I am sorry. It is super frustrating.

We are getting ready to replace our carpet. One because it is just old and two.. many dogs, three kids, many accidents. Thankfully we had the best pad and upgraded carpet. We have been OCD about cleaning up after accidents. The carpet cleaner has been awesome. Plus spot cleaner stuff. Throw rugs help. I would put a doggie pee pad underneath the throw rugs since they have a plastic barrier. Our dogs just didn't have run of the house and pee everywhere but there were accidents here or there. For the most part we were on top of it. 20 years later and our current dog, who is a puppy, has had one accident when we brought him home, but five months later, no accidents. He's never on the carpet either (our downstairs is wood). He only comes upstairs once and a blue moon.
I would invest in a carpet cleaner, lots of throw rugs, puppy pads under the throw rugs.

We have 5 cats (3 very senior cats) and we live in an apt (1400 sq ft) that is almost completely carpeted. The bathrooms, kitchen and entryway aren't carpeted. The rest has thin carpeting that isn't meant to last more than 2 years or so. When people move out, they just rip it all out. My son got me a Bissell carpet cleaning machine a few years ago and it's great for little spots and overall carpet cleaning (and furniture). I would love to get it professionally cleaned once (we're here for 3+ years, but this is our 3rd apt here)..... A lot of people here throw down tons of area rugs over the carpeting, but the complex really does just rip it out after a few years. Good luck! Keeping your shoes off really does help, and keeping on top of animal accidents helps too.......

I would recommend a portable carpet cleaner, like the Bissel Little Green Machine, paired with an enzyme spray like Nature's Miracle. Lifts stains and smells, discourages them from making it a return area.
