I'm a para. Last year I was in the second grade classroom. One of the students wrapped up one of her old, worn stuffed animals herself to give the teacher as her gift. The teacher was really touched because it came from that child's own thinking/heart. Hopefully your child's teacher is the same, and if not that's HER problem not yours.

Anyone else appalled that the teacher was dropping hints that she wanted Michaels gift cards?!? As a teacher myself, I am truly grateful for ANY gift, even if it's a kind word or smile.

Can't imagine a teacher being so negative over a sweet gesture. I would hope she could compose herself to be kind and gracious. Let your daughter give the gift because she will be so thrilled it may be what the teacher needs to humble herself and be ever so thankful.

I would give her the gift your dd picked out. Even if the teacher doesn't like it and expressed a disgust in front of your dd, your dd is still in the right. And if this does happens, maybe this can be a lesson for the teacher to learn. I feel something has to change with this teacher, she needs to relax more and maybe the warm loving spirit in your daughter can rub off on the teacher.

This poor teacher. She sounds like she can do her job well but she doesn't know what is really important. One of my favorite gifts ever is a big apple necklace that says [HASH]1 teacher on it. My students were so excited. They were playing in the neighborhood one day and came across it at a yard sale. Apparently they all decided to buy it for me and ran home and found whatever change they could because it cost "a whole dollar"! I wear that necklace proudly! Kids are so awesome! I'd let your daughter give the gift to her teacher and use this as an opportunity to teach her that people react to things in different ways. It maybe doesn't mean they love the gift any less, but they just don't show it in the same way that others might. My first year of teaching one of my first graders gave me a diamond (fake) necklace. He spent his own money. It was so cute. He is now in his 13th year of teaching at the high school and we joke about that gift a lot. Kids remember stuff.

I drop hints to my FAMILY that I want a Michael's gift card and they don't hear it.

I was wondering if my kids' teachers would like Michael's gift cards! All these years with the Peas "teacher-gift threads" and I have no idea what to get them!

I would have your child give the gift. If she feels bad about her reaction, use it as a teachable moment about how sometimes you miss when you give gifts, but when you receive them you should react nicely, even when you don't like them. I mean, we've ALL gotten gifts in our lives that we were less than thrilled about and have experiences to share with our kids. Even in 2nd grade, I would imagine that she would understand a conversation along those lines.
I wouldn't go there unless she brings it up though.
