For the past 20 years, I've been scrapping 12x12 and now it seems as if those pages are overwhelming. I'm thinking of switching to 8.5x11 in the hopes that I may be able to accomplish more.
Has anyone suddenly changed their scrappy format??

What do you mean by "accomplish more"? Why do you think that a smaller size will help?
For me I stick with the bigger size because I can fit many photos and therefore do less pages. I do pare my photos down and do most single pages but having the whole 12x12 page still makes a big difference. That being said I use page protectors of all sizes in my albums. If you want to try a smaller page just start and see how it works for you before you buy an album.

I put 8.5x11 layouts in 12x12 albums with other layouts. I agree with caangel just try making some pages and see if you like it. You don't necessarily have to change your whole album. In 2016, I did a more 8.5x11 focused album and I really love those layouts. But I tend to just scrap 1 photo on a 8.5x11. I still have a need sometimes for 12x12. Also for a while there was variety in 8.5x11 divided page protectors, but then that kind of fell off. I kept thinking I wanted to start a company with a focus on that size, because I do like it. It's also really great for hybrid pages bcz you can easily print that size.

Can't hurt to try something new, right?

I’m switching this year...I
Pre-2000 I did 8.5x11 traditional 2000-2020 I did 12x12 traditional with some PL 2012 - trying 6x8 PL
I still have plenty of photos in both my pre-2021 buckets to scrap so I will have the experience of scrapping in all sizes. I’d just like to move to a smaller format. The kids are adults, I have less photos now. I’d like lighter and smaller albums.

I made the decision to switch focus and switch formats next year. My youngest will graduate HS this year, and I don't feel strongly about continuing to make a yearly family album after that. When I change focus to a more personal album, I'll be switching formats too, probably to 8.5x11.

I enjoy 8.5 x 11, and went on a 8.5 x 11 spree last summer. I'm even getting ready to do a layout share featuring quite a few 8.5 x 11s tomorrow! Right now I mix them in with 12 x 12 in my albums, but I agree about wanting something smaller, I could see switching to that eventually when my kids are older.

I tried to do a smaller album and didn't like it...I then tried some suggestions that the Peas had and what I found I was doing was actually trying to simplify my scrapstyle due to the smaller size and it ended up being something I thought was ugly. So...now I am working smaller, but it is still the same amount of work. Depending on how you like to scrapbook, it might be easier but it might not be.

I only scrap 8.5x11 for the past decade or more. I started in that size and then did 12x12 for 7 or 8 years. Since I switched back I have been very happy. I can store them better, I can scrap faster and just over all I prefer it. I also often print photos smaller so I can fit more on a page. I usually scrap 2 prints on a 4x6.

My very first album was an 8 1/2x11. I wanted to see if I would enjoy scrapbooking. I thought it was a good size to start with, not too large and not too small. I now keep an ongoing 12x12 album for myself and 8x8 for each of my nieces and nephews. I will be getting married and want to do something for my soon to be step-children. I debated about what size to use for albums for them. I seriously considered 8 1/2x11, however I've decided to go with the 8x8, mostly to keep things simpler in terms of page protectors. I say use whatever size inspires you. If that changes, then change.

You may struggle with the change of ratio more than the change of size. 8x8 might be an easier transition. I don't know. Depends a lot on your style. Moving from a square page to a tall page can be hard. But there's no harm in trying. I've always hated the hugeness of 12x12 albums, especially with binder rings. Try a bunch of sizes and see what speaks to you?

It’s worth the try to see if you like it. I tried it several years back, as well as digital, and brighter one were for me. I don’t think 8.5x11, or 9x12 is enough room for me, and I also like my base layer to be square. 8x8 is way too small for my regular LO’s, so I went back to strictly 12x12, and the one off gift album of whatever size I buy at the time I need one.
