"As authorities continue to book additional rioters for criminal offenses, charges that may eventually include sedition and murder, we will gain a sharper picture of the crowd’s profile and learn more about these people who have embraced the QAnon religion and fell under Trump’s spell. But in the early going, we’ve learned that many who rallied or rioted on January 6 were, in Trump’s memorable 2016 phrase, only “the best and most serious people.” Take, for example, Bradley Rukstales, a tech CEO in suburban Chicago who faces charges of illegally entering the Capitol “with the intent of and impeding government business” or others arrested on similar charges: retired Air Force officer Larry Rendall Brock Jr; Republican state legislator Derrick Evans (who live-streamed his storming of the Capitol Building); Aaron Mostofksy, the son of a Brooklyn Supreme Court judge; Olympic gold medalist Klete Keller; and former Midland, Texas, mayoral candidate Jenny Cudd, who said in one video, “We did break down Nancy Pelosi’s office door.” Cudd was arrested Wednesday for her role in the Capitol rumble. T hen there are the ranks of those who haven’t been charged: a Seattle doctor, who appeared in a video recounting her storming of the Capitol. A f ormer Republican state representative, who resigned his adjunct professor position at a college after posting a video of the melee outside the Capitol, as KDKA reported. A California physician (and vaccine critic), who read a speech inside the Capitol, and her communications director. A Texas attorney, alleged by the Houston Chronicle to have posted video from inside the Capitol, got sacked by his bosses for his “activism.” A housing entrepreneur, who was arrested for violating the curfew. An unnamed Pennsylvania teacher who was reportedly suspended for his role in the unrest, as the Morning Call reported. A retired SEAL, who bragged about “breaching” the Capitol. A Chicago real estate agent, who posted selfies from the crowd outside the Capitol on Facebook and was fired, in turn, by her bosses. Then there was an active-duty U.S. Army officer who led a group to the rally, making herself the subject of an Army probe, according to CBS News. Police departments in Seattle, New York, Philadelphia and other jurisdictions have opened investigations into whether any of their officers participated in the rebellion, as have some fire departments. And finally, let’s not forget Ashli Babbitt, the Air Force vet and QAnon devotee who was shot dead as she tried to vault through a just-broken window into the Speaker’s Lobby just outside the House chamber.... Many hail from the Republican professional and political classes, and they fueled the rampage with their organizational skills and reputations just much as the face-paint guy did with his horns, fur, a U.S. flag mounted on a spear, and tattoos. Some of the criminal interlopers will argue that they only invaded the Capitol to exercise their First Amendment rights to petition the government for a redress of grievances. But that doesn’t fly. Nowhere does the First Amendment empower citizens to bull their way through a line of police—causing murderous injury to one—shatter windows and break doors, make violent threats and disrupt Congress. Nor does anybody have a right to stride into the Capitol behind the mob as long as they don’t break anything. The masses who coursed through the Capitol grand rooms and hallways clearly broke the law, and their overwhelming numbers abetted the rioters who spearheaded the attack.... Instead of thinking of the rioters as “them,” try thinking of them as “us.” It’s bound to make you uncomfortable, but at least it’s a start." www.politico.com/news/magazine/2021/01/13/we-mock-the-rioters-as-ignorant-at-our-peril-459072Insurrection: it's not just for the "economically anxious". It's about Qanon. White Power. Christian Nationalism. For me, I've seen these people behind too many companies and professionals. I try not to support them by reading between the lines and asking them a few questions. It's not hard to figure out who supports violent overthrow of the government to fit their stunted twisted ideals. Really. Cut off the money. Stop supporting their businesses. It's a start - especially for those who should know better and who are used to a comfortable life.

These people honestly believe this shit. Trump has done so much damage to this country, to families, to democracy. What's insane is HE doesn't believe this shit, but his cult do. I'd feel sorry for them if it wasn't so terrifying.

I'd feel sorry for them if it wasn't so terrifying. OMG. One of my siblings texted me today saying they deleted all social media accounts because “I don’t support companies that restrict free speech.” Um, okay... I really didn’t know what to say because I didn’t want to engage with the crazy. I know from previous experience that it just sets off a landslide of conspiracy theory bullshit so I just didn’t go there. I don’t have the energy for it today.

"WE SHARE A COUNTRY WE DO NOT SHARE A REALITY"A harrowing story of the mentality of the mob. BELIEFS OVER REALITY "How do you relate when you don’t share an objective reality? Fact-checking delusion is not effective when the president is promoting conspiracy theories. After I had been screamed at for five minutes, something strange happened. A young man tried to appeal to me by reminding me who I was — a “middle-aged woman.” And in that moment, I snapped out of the trance and reconnected with myself and my sense of humor. I jokingly responded to him with mock offense, which in turn seemed to break his own trance: This man, who told me I’m lucky he’s not antifa or else he’d beat me, got nervous that he’d offended me with a reference to my age. He really was the guy next door. But while we share a country, we do not share a reality." www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/01/11/this-is-what-it-looks-like-when-mob-turns-you/

So, not really the ‘disenfranchised’ as has been harped at for 4 years? Instead it’s the white male doing ok for himself, fuck all the rest of you kind of guy?
Not shocked at all

Yeah, my sister is in the Fox OAN bandwagon and you can’t use reason with her at all. If Fox didn’t say it it isn’t ‘real’ thankfully Fox did say Biden won the election. But she’s still harping on the people waiting at the border to enter our country ‘illegally’ never mind the reality that if they wanted to come here illegally they would have done so already. Waiting at the border/point of entry to apply for asylum is legally how our laws work. I can guarantee you if they wanted to be here illegally they wouldn’t be waiting in line for a court date to do it legally - they would just enter, it’s not that hard. My sister used to use logic I swear

Yeah, my experience with Trump supporters is that they are not disenfranchised. IMO, that explanation gives people an excuse for their behavior and takes away their personal responsibility.
I also am not convinced that Trump doesn't believe what he says. He is delusional, and because of his behavior, people have tended to go along with whatever he says to placate him. That has come home to roost now. I think that some of his advisors and those in congress know what is really going on but are in on the lie, but I think many have fallen for the lies themselves.

Now maybe people will finally believe it's not all backwards, low IQ, rural inbred people that only follow Trump. Living in a red state, they are more bold and I am not surprised at all at who's involved.

Backwards enough that they would like to return to the 1940’s and put women & POC in their place

They aren’t telling the truth about what’s going on.” And then in the very next breath said, “I get my news from a variety of more conservative sources. THEY will tell you what the others are afraid to.” I said, “Did it ever occur to you that maybe some places that report the news refuse to tell a story until it has been vetted and completely verified?” Good grief, some people are absolutely exhausting to try to reason with, so I just can’t anymore.

My sister used to use logic I swear my sister is the same way! she hears / sees this stuff, spews out the garbage, and when I say 'that's a debunked QAnon theory' she asks "what's QAnon?" Because she's seeing it third or fourth-hand from Facebook re-posts. And then she wonders why she's having uncontrolled anxiety- uhh, maybe because you're wallowing in unproven, delusional CRAP?!? eta: my sister is a newly-retired elementary school teacher; I swear she used to be smarter that this. She has turned into an anti-vaxxer and really, truly believes the COVID vaccine has some sort of nanotechnology chips in so Bill Gates can track all of us for SOME nefarious reason. My other sister said to her, "you know they can already do that every time you use your phone with location services, right?" I think her newly-retired status and the pandemic fear has hit her hard- she needs SOMETHING to occupy her time, and unfortunately, this crap is what caught her attention- not a new hobby.

And these are the people who went to Parler and came back in about 2 weeks. I appreciate other people's perspectives when they are logical and fact based. I can even tolerate feelings and questioning, but outright Q ideas and people who think Mr. Tumnus' evil twin is a right-fighter. nope. It was really one of my greatest joys to see the Tumnus wannabe turn out to live with his mom - I am assuming her basement - and only eat organic food. When he goes to jail, I am wondering if the next judge will be as merciful to make sure he gets organic food. Does seem like something a faun would eat though.

I have one trumpster ‘friend’ and another that was - probably still is - posting conspiracy BS. Trumpster was blocked way back, not long after the 2016 election. The other I snoozed twice for 30 days, then realised she was never going to stop, so she is also on permanent block now. The occasional nutter rant by family and friends, I just scroll past, but there are not many of them any more.

I'm now living in an echo chamber because I not only blocked, but unfriended the those who spout lies on social media. So be it. As more reveal themselves, click, they're gone too. I'm sure I've been unfriended by many who think I'm a nasty woman and I don't care. At least my grandchildren will know their Grammy was on the right side of history.
These nutters in the OP aren't disenfranchised, they're threatened by the thought of not being on top of the people heap.

I have an aunt who was really racist, and the only way we got her to stop was to call her out on it, tell her she wasn’t welcome around us if she said those kinds of things, and followed through. I cannot claim she is no longer racist, but her behavior changed when there were consequences and we stopped hand-waving about it.
Anyhow, Trump performed better than Biden among people making over $100,000. So all of those NYT working-folks-in-diners stories were doubly offensive.

Elizabeth Warren's opponent in the last election, Shiva Ayyadurai, has a Bachelor's, Masters, and PhD from MIT. He's also a crazy conspiracy theorist and vehement anti-vaxxer. Totally aligned with the Trumpster crowd.
There was a crowd trying to get Dr. Fauci replaced by Dr. Ayyadurai, who is not a medical doctor or public health specialist. He's a computer scientist.

My brother, SIL, and nephew are anything but disenfranchised. My nephew and SIL have migrated somewhere since Parler became unavailable, so I can no longer keep tabs on their insanity. My brother continues to post lies, and today a political cartoon that essentially says the GOP have cut off ties with The Thing, the caption reading "Cutting off their potus to spite their face". So even after the attack on the Capitol, he remains loyal to The Thing. It nauseates me. I've seen my SIL retweet Qanon-positive things. I've never seen my brother do this, but if I did, it would terrify me.
