I came across this cardmaker who uses glycerine to make her inks blend more smoothly. I happen to have glycerine for another project (replacing the water in snow globes! but I heard it's used in cookie decorating too) so I think I'll give it a go. It works with distress oxides and also has the side effect of reducing their water reactivity. I would assume it would work with any blendable ink. She says the glycerine won't hurt the ink pads and actually helps keep them juicy. Her faux die cut inlay technique makes me think I should invest in an embossing mat too. The results are beautiful. I have a bottle of glycerin and now I remember why. I read somewhere a long time ago about using it to refresh dry ink pads. Ink blending is something I struggle with so this idea may make it easier to get the look I’m going for. I like the fact that it reduces the water reactivity, gives the piece a nice smooth finish instead of that blotchy look you get when the piece is sprayed. Both ideas are going on my list of techniques to try out.

Great video! You could always put your ink down on the craft sheet if you were worried about introducing too much glycerin into the ink pad. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I've seen this technique before, and it looks really good. I believe that glycerin is one of the ingredients in embossing and pigment inks, as well as blender pen fluid, so it shouldn't harm inkpads at all. In fact, I think that one of the ingredients in Ranger's Perfect Ink Refresher is glycerin. And yes, it is used in baking and cake decorating. Glycerin seems to be a very useful product. We used to keep some in the house when the kids were little so that we could make our own bubble blowing liquid. Who knows? I might find some under the sink somewhere.

This is great, now I have to get some glycerin. THS joblackford I got a little bottle from Joann for a couple of bucks. Some drugstores stock it too. It's used for skin and haircare as well as baking and crafts. I was surprised by all the uses once I went looking for it.

Just watched the video and I'm interested. I have glycerin as I used to use it to make home made fondant for cakes. Plus it can be used to refresh some waxes and things. The Frugal Crafter did a video on the uses of glycerin. Oxides blend easily because of the pigment in them. I'm going to try with Distress INK as that is where a lot of people seem to have the problem with blending and the circles showing up from the blending foams and brushes. Thanks for sharing JoBlackford!

Thanks for sharing JoBlackford! Good plan! That makes sense. I only have a couple of regular distress inks but I might give it a go too, next time I get to blending.

joblackford , I finally tried it last night. What a difference!! Thank you so much for sharing this tip. Glad to hear it worked! I haven't gotten around to trying it yet. I tried this with Distress Ink and it works well. I tried with the brushes and with a foam blending tool and no circles! Definitely use it for Distress Inks. Oxides already blend well, so I won't use it for those inks! Thanks for sharing with us Joblackford!

I watched the video, and I think she uses way too much glycerin. I haven't seen anyone else apply the glycerin to the entire cardstock surface either. I'll probably try different techniques, but thanks for reminding me to try this. I found a brand new, unopened bottle of glycerin under the kitchen sink. It was filled to the very top, almost overflowing. Can't wait to give this a try!

I have some glycerin on the way. Will report back I was buying it to try to make my own distress inks out of gouache and watercolor paint.

I tried it with 3 cards that I'm almost finished with. I didn't notice any difference at all. It wasn't any easier to blend the colors. In fact, it was messy and warped my cardstock a little. I'm sure the cardstock had something to do with it, because I used some of those pre-made card sets that you can buy at Michael's; but that's the reason I tried the glycerin in the first place. I knew the blending would be more difficult. Not only did it warp the cardstock, but I got ink all over the card bases, so I had to chop up the cards and just use the fronts. I made it work, and the cards ended up really nice. I'll post them when they're finished. Maybe I'll try applying the glycerin directly to the cardstock. I'm just concerned about the warping, so I'll try using heavier cardstock next time. ETA Here are the cards.
