Has anyone done this program?
I need to lose weight. I'm at my heaviest (though I haven't gotten on a scale to ascertain this). I'm not happy. I feel awful and embarrassed to go into work (which I have to do now-- no more remote learning) and in addition, have been having unexplained physical symptoms. My bloodwork and medical stuff looks good. My doctors have suggested Lexapro. I keep telling them that I'd be totally fine if I knew what was going on with me physically.
My weight is something I can maybe have control over. I've been successful with WW in the past, but I can't seem to get past my wallowing to get started. I represented our association/union at an Insurance Committee meeting last week, and this 'invitation only' program was mentioned by our insurance cooperative. Lo and behold, today I received an invitation. After getting over my kneejerk reaction of being insulted, I signed up. It felt like some kind of sign. I need to do something.
Does anyone have any experience w/this program? Did you have success with it? Is it worth it? What are your thoughts?

I just cancelled the WW fee I’ve been paying any haven’t used since April lol.
I’ve had two friends rave about Noom and how it works so I’m giving it a try. It has only been a few days so I haven’t formed an opinion just yet.

Me! I did it though my work as a free benefit and lost 43 pounds and have kept it off for a year so far. I’m up too late so I will revisit the thread tomorrow and add more thoughts or answer specific questions if you have them.

I was using it before the pandemic started and had successfully lost 30 pounds in 6 months. I lost steam during the pandemic and gained 25 of them back. My year subscription has expired as of September. I think weighing myself every day was the catalyst. I need to start that part up again.

Can you tell me more about Omada? Price, basic program structure? I looked at the site and it doesn't tell you much before you are required to enter email, etc.

I received a scale that connected directly to the app. You have a coach assigned to you and a small group. There is a message board for your group and there are lessons for each week of the program. With each lesson there are suggestions and ideas for swapping foods and adding exercise, etc. It's very doable (at least in my opinion.)

I admit that I didn't realize it was a group thing. I am totally ok with that, but I'm really hoping that no one from my job is in my small group, LOL. My insurance covers this. I filled out some questionnaires last night. I admit that I completely guessed on my weight, but I just couldn't handle getting on the scale. I will have to face that music soon. Now I am awaiting getting assigned to a group and coach. Apparently my scale will be shipped soon.

Even if you are in the group with someone you know, they don't see anything other than your percentage of your goal. The little circle around your profile photo moves as you work toward your goal. The first goal for me was 20#. Then they set another goal. I also like that the coach had conversation starters on the board. They are also available by private message and will send encouraging words as you work toward your goal. They see all your statistics.

Ok, some more thoughts about Omada: It was completely free to me as a benefit from my work including the scale mentioned and it connects with a free app that tracks your weight for goals and a plot graph to see your progress and trends over time. There is a message board, private chats with your coach, and weekly lessons to read that are the focus of that week. I was also worried that I’d be with someone from work but I didn’t know anyone. You could be pretty anonymous. I didn’t use a picture of myself and I just used my first name. No one but your coach sees your weight and private conversations with your coach. They would see your progress circle around your picture (again, mine wasn’t my face) but wouldn’t know any numbers - just what percentage of your goal you’ve reached so far. You can interact with others on the message board about participant driven topics and the weekly coach promoted topics. No pressure to post- some people never did. That was a little disappointing to me- I wish people had been more active on discussions. It was usually the same couple of people. And that leads me to the biggest point. Just like anything else, you get what you put into it. It’s not magic. I saw plenty of people really struggling and not doing well. I saw a couple that were doing ok and a couple that had great success like me. Why it worked for me: The biggest reason was that I was ready. I’d been feeling I needed to do something for a long time and this email about the program came at the right time. I was like free scale? I’m in. Because I’m cheap. Lol. A free scale changed my life. It’s simple. They stressed Omada was about small changes you could do to be healthy. The mini lessons are very basic- like it’s not ground breaking material. For me they were more of reminders or something to focus on that week. It isn’t really meant to be a huge weight loss program. The point is that losing 7% of your weight (something like that) lowers your risk for diabetes so doing that would be great. That number is your your first goal automatically sets at. If you meet that, you then can set your own goals - I always did small ones to motivate me and feel successful. Since the theme of the program is about adopting small changes to become healthier I embraced that. I decided whatever I did was my new lifestyle. I wasn’t going to ”diet” and then try to go back because I knew my old patterns weren’t healthy or going to work. This helped me a lot because it was a permanent habit change. Weighing yourself every day. This is huge. I’ve weighed myself every morning for over two years only missing a handful of days. This keeps me on track and helps me be real with myself if I’ve been a little too lax with bread for example. But it’s been such a positive thing! People say throw away the scale and never weigh yourself. That may work for some people but for me it has been so helpful to SEE the patterns over time. When I thought nothing was happening or it was too slow I could look back at the plot graph and see my weight was trending down. I also became really comfortable with Fluctuations in my weight and didn’t get concerned gaining a few pounds as long as I was doing other healthy habits because I learned how my body works. Tracking food. I love that the app has you track what you ate in simple form. Like I would put lunch: salad with chicken and that’s it. It was more of a reminder for me to really think about what I was eating and my coach could comment on it. We didn’t track calories. I lost 43 pounds (and have kept it off) and never once counted a calorie or macro (still don’t even know what that is! Lol). I loved that because again, it’s doable for life. I didn’t want to spend time counting stuff or worrying about that. For food I just decided on my own what would be good for eating. The lessons offer tips and your coach would help if you wanted. I basically cut sugar like dessert (I used to eat a lot of junk) and bread I basically stopped eating. It was really hard at first. And now that I’m in maintaince I do eat those things but just less and my daily weigh ins keep me honest and if I trend too high for my weight I cut back. After the program ended I stopped tracking my food because I didn’t need it anymore. I’ll think it in my head sometimes. One of the lessons encouraged exercise which at that point I wasn’t doing at all so I started yoga because it seemed easy. after I lost all the weight I bought a peloton and now I work out daily and love it and I- and still do yoga because it was such a game changer for me. ] I lost weight and became healthier and my confidence and energy increased. I love buying clothes and feeling good and comfortable in them. I am super proud of my dedication to my health... because I wanted a free scale. 🤣 The program is very simple. It’s really you just deciding to do it - with some structure and a coach for support. It worked for me because I liked the low pressure idea and I was ready. Sorry I wrote a novel! Lol

Lol This is super helpful, thank you so much! I have loved WW and quite honestly have sent them a ton of money over the years, paying for the app because I am over my goal weight and have only followed the program off and on for years now. One thing that I don't like about WW is that it is easy to get obsessive with counting points. At least, that's how it is for me. I like the sound of this one. I like the idea of making small changes and setting reasonable goals. I don't want to have to track points if I don't have to. It might be more sustainable for me. Exercise is another matter. I just need to get over my fear and dread and just do something. Probably anything. I think getting this 'invitation' email and hearing about the program last week was a sign-- kind of like you with the free scale. It's time to start something.

Yes! That was my attitude going in: if I can just make a couple small changes it will be better than what I’m doing now. And that’s the point. And if that’s what you end up with - great! And if it encourages you to go farther with more changes and more results that’s awesome too!! Feel free to reach out if you have more questions or want more support during the program. You can do this.

Interestingly enough, I just got an email asking if I wanted to sign up again. I filled out the questionnaire again and I'm waiting for results. I would definitely do it if I'm approved. I need the jumpstart again, just like paget described. That's EXACTLY why I started in the first place. I never missed a single day weighing in (even with travel) before the pandemic started. Six months of weighing myself every day was very rewarding to me!

I’ve been a lifetime WW member forever, and it has worked well for me. I still pay the fee for the app each month although I’m obviously not using it lately. 😬 I just feel like I need more accountability and motivation right now. Even a little cheerleading. I think that is true. Your life changes, and so do your circumstances, your motivation, your available time, etc. I lost a bunch of weight with WW years ago and then gained it back because I was just unable to put the amount of time into it that it needed. I rejoined several times and again, no success. That's when I figured out I NOW needed something different. It didn't mean WW was bad, it just was no longer a fit for me and my life. On the recommendation of jeremysgirl and other peas, I checked out No BS and it sounds like a lot of it is similar to this program you are looking into. Small, consistent, even almost unnoticeable changes that you can sustain. It seems to me that it's worth checking out this program through work as you want to try something new (so your mindset is right) and you don't have to pay for it, lol! Just like anything else, you get what you put into it. It’s not magic. Would someone PLEASE get to work on the Magic Plan? Please???

I'd say it took maybe a week or so? Possibly a little longer, but I had it in time for the program start. A bunch of the people in my group did not have it right away. In the grand scheme of things that is no big deal at all. I'm finding the program to be everything that paget has said about it! There's no rocket science here. It's all pretty basic things. My group isn't too chatty, which bums me out a bit. I'm one of the chatty ones, LOL. I asked and there are about 38 people in our group. I haven't seen more than maybe 15 different people post at one time or another. The Coach seems nice. I lost about 7 pounds in the last month since starting. I wish it was more but I tell myself it's because I'm a little older than I was when I've lost weight before. There are a few people at my job who have signed up!

Jili 7 pounds in a month is great in my opinion! It’s slower sustainable change! You got this. Too bad we didn’t do it at the same time- we could have been chatty in the group together! Lol I was really looking forward to that aspect of it. I wonder if there are Facebook groups or Reddit or something? Maybe you could find another Omada tribe to talk with - shouldn’t matter that they aren’t in your group. You have the same experience to discuss.

Jili Congratulations on your first 7 lbs! That's a great number for a month! 1-2 lbs a week is sustainable and the healthy way to lose it! I lost 60 lbs back in 2012. It took me 9 months to lose it. I just started weighing myself daily and eating less. Once I lost about 20 lbs I started adding in exercise. For me it was Zumba that got me moving. I bought the DVD's and did it at home, I never went to a class. That's just not my thing. I maintained my weight loss from 2012 to 2019 I was smart with my food choices, and used My fitness pal to log my food/water/workouts and weight, which kept me accountable to myself. I added in low weight exercises to tone my arms etc... and then my Mom passed unexpectedly and I hurt my back, so I stopped working out and I started eating my feelings. I've gained 30 lbs. I was still getting on the scale everyday, but I was just watching the numbers grow and would make excuses and say "as long as I don't go over this certain weight I'll be ok". When I hit that magical number in Dec, my brain (instead of my feelings) took over and I'm now being better about what I'm putting in my mouth. Now that I'm 51, it really is harder for me to lose the weight, but I'm not backing down. Our weather sucks in winter, so I am doing walking workouts at home that I find on youtube until I can get outside and walk. I also found this fun gal who does fun 20 min HIIT dance workouts that are really easy. (My back is still messed up so I can't do full on workouts like I used to). I like her videos because there are no planks, burpies, etc... I just can't do those with my back issues. Her channel is emkfit on youtube if you are interested. She's a complete dork, her motto is fake it til you make it/wrong and strong. She just encourages you to move your body. She has a different music theme to each workout. 80's, 90's, 2000's, latin, Diva's, etc... Like I said, they aren't hard workouts, but they get me motivated to at least not sit and do nothing. When I'm done with one of her 20 min workouts I feel loose enough to find another 20 min workout to do. So again, congratulations on your weight loss! I think it's awesome!

I will look her up. That sounds right up my alley. I hate planks and burpees, too (I've done some Bikini Body Mommy). Dh and in the initial steps of converting our office into a mini fitness room (not a major change-- we have to leave the carpet). Right now I walk on the treadmill that we have in there and and can watch TV while doing that. We're looking at purchasing a bike and mounting a TV in front of that, too. We plan to put in some removable floor tiles so we can lay down a mat that we could use for cardio, floor work, etc. I HATE any kind of exercise, but I am trying. I've been up and down the weight loss rollercoaster before-- I lost 30 lbs several years ago, but it's back with a vengeance. I said I'd never let it happen again, but it's so easy to just let it all go. My hormones have left the building and I feel that's a big factor, too. I really just need to get back to a better place and get serious about maintaining it.

Hi! Totally looking her up! thanks!

When my workplace offered this, I immediately signed up. I had just turned 50 and things were starting to go downhill. I found the program very easy to follow and lost almost 20 pounds and have kept all but a couple pounds off. A few of my other coworkers had great results with it too. I still weigh myself daily and use what was in the lessons. I was lucky to have a fairly active group. My coach was really nice. It was a really positive experience. You definitely should do it.

I just cancelled the WW fee I’ve been paying any haven’t used since April lol. I’ve had two friends rave about Noom and how it works so I’m giving it a try. It has only been a few days so I haven’t formed an opinion just yet. I'm a month into noom and while it doesn't suck, I'm not sure I am getting anything out of it

Dh uses it, too. I’m a (failed) Lifetime member, so it’s not expensive.

I KNOW I have to put in the work if I want to lose weight. But Noom seems like a whole LOT of work to me. Their tracker sucks. They say it is just a secondary tool to help you get the hang of the green/yellow/red foods - but if it is secondary, why the constant reminders to track?

I signed up for Noom and WW at the same time. I was familiar with WWnand wanted to try the 2 week trial of Noom for a direct conparison. I hated Noom and cancelled after maybe 7 days.
