I wanted to create some flat note cards with a simple embossed frame and remembered this old video from JenniferMcGuireInk showing how simple it is.
But when I went to shop for the embossing pad/mat I was annoyed by how vague the die cut companies are as to how it all works and what you need.
"The Emboss and Transfer Set Accessory by Sizzix will precisely compensate for the proper pressure and height required for pressing thin material surfaces like paper, cardstock and foil to make a lasting impression on your projects."
"Spellbinders own Tan Embossing Pads make the patented embossing function possible and give papers and foil incredible embossed details."
Good grief! That's literally all the explanation they have. Vague much? Most of the Q&A just parrot that same language and the reviews are vague too. And all the patented TMed names drive me crazy. I just want a thing that will let me press the die into my cardstock and have it emboss instead of cut.
I've seen JM use the tan Spellbinders pad in the BigShot with regular cutting plates but that video probably pre-dates the Sixxiz products. Sixxiz sells the Texturz silicone rubber mat separately from the Texturz Impressions pad which they use to replace one of the cutting plates, or you can buy them as a bundle. Does their silicone mat not work with regular cutting plates like the Spellbinders tan one? I want to avoid buying Sizzix as much as possible so I'm leaning towards the Spellbinders tan pads.
Do you have an embossing pad or mat? Which one? Does it work well?
DIY suggestions welcome too!

I have the Spellbinders pad. It came with my machine. Yes it gives a good deep impression.
The sandwich is, starting from the bottom => platform + die (cut side up) + paper + tan embossing mat + purple embossing plate.
ETA: I usually use Neenah 80# carstock.

You can also use plumber's gasket, which you should be able to find at your local Home Depot or other similar store. Here's a link to some on Amazon: Plumber's gasket sheet There are different thicknesses, but I'd try the 1/8".

I figured there was probably a similar item out there not priced for crafters. I'll take a look. JM also mentioned (in another video I found) making a pad by layering fun foam, which I have. Maybe 2 or 3 sheets. We'll see...

If you just want straight line embossing, use a score board.

If you just want straight line embossing, use a score board. Thank you. I'm going to try that out. I'm not sure if I can manage exactly the look I want but it's worth experimenting. I had some success with using a stitched frame die with 3 sheets of fun foam. Thanks for the suggestions Still experimenting.
