That's why I mentioned being in the South (and put "class" in quotes) where they still do cottillion and women are taught to be submissive to their husbands.

I don't equate classy with submissive or demure either, but being surrounded by evangelicals for the past 30 years, I can tell you that I am in the minority here.

I heard that about class returning to the WH so freaking many times over the past 4 years. Even my prudish mother, who used to say to me allllll the time that money doesn't buy class. Yet she thought Melania was the classiest FLOTUS we have had since Jackie Kennedy. I did ask her one time, what is so classy about a woman who used to pose nude on the internet and slept with a married man? No answer to that other than we are all sinners, blah blah blah.

Oh, yeah -- I definitely wasn't endorsing "Melania has class while Michelle did not" as a sincere argument.  She has been very difficult for those of us who genuinely do not care if someone has nude pictures in their past or brings cookies to the troops but also had to listen to eight years of people tearing down Michelle Obama over things like wearing a sleeveless dress.  Fighting the urge to retaliate should get me a presidential medal of freedom, but I suppose the days of awarding that honor to unqualified people like me are for now behind us .

One thing I am finding interesting (genuinely) from this thread is the notion than Melania might be construed as having class because she is subservient.  I . . . did not get that impression from her years in the White House -- it seemed like, instead of doing the first-lady thing of doing a ton of uncompensated labor to support her husband's presidency, she moved late to DC, largely kept to herself, and, according to private reports, griped heavily about things like participating in White House Christmas decoration.

I’m glad the Stepford FLOTUS is now ensconced in her kingdom in Florida.

No worries, glad that it was a misunderstanding. I agree wholeheartedly that class is shown most clearly with how one treats support staff.

One of the best examples I‘ve stored in my brain of the power of confirmation bias was when our former prolific libertarian male Pea, who had previously described Hillary Clinton as a “disgusting First Lady,” jumped into the original Class Has Returned thread to defend Melania’s nude photos as appreciably different from most nudies because they were intended as “art.”

Also, a great example of “It’s eleven. It’s one MORE,” so I have it stored in a couple places. LOL.
